Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Waffles and other first finger foods?

My girls (8 months old) have moved through the purees well and are now puff and cheerio addicts.  However, they aren't very good feeding themselves yet with the puffs.

I feel like they are ready for more finger foods, but am scared to try cut up veggies or fruit yet since they have their bottom teeth only.  I thought waffles and tofu might be good options since they are a bit softer.

My questions -

1. When did you move up to more finger foods?

2. Which ones?

3. For waffles - what kind do you use?  Do they need to be egg free?

4. If you serve tofu, how do you prepare it?

  • Oh - I do know about www.wholesomebabyfood.com.  Just want to hear your experiences.

  • We started finger foods at about 7 months. DS did fine with them. I would chunk up soft fruits for him, steamed sweet potato chunked up is a fav also. There is a finger food website some where also, I'm not sure of the link., he loves waffles, and most the time would gum them until he could eat it. He also had only his bottom 2 teeth when we started.
  • I haven't tried waffles yet, but DD has been eating pancakes for a few weeks now. She loves them. I buy the frozen ones and will give her one if I make them at home. I tear them up into little pieces and out a few on her tray at a time.

  • We use the Eggo whole wheat waffles.  DS loves them!  I just break off one or two squares at a time and give them to him.  He also likes pieces of toast dipped in his purees--that's one way that we're getting him to still eat the purees, since he's starting to refuse them more often. He also likes pieces of banana, slices of apple, and pear slices.

We have also given him whole peas, pieces of carrots, pieces of green beans, and other small veggies (all cooked of course).  I don't feel like he eats enough that way though, so I always let him try a few, then feed him the pureed version.

Oh, we started with pieces of banana when DS was about 7 months old, and have moved on from there. He started solids at 6 months.

  • I did all kinds of things- just soft and small.  I don't think her teeth did much anyway.  Waffles were/are great.  I chose egg free. I didn't do tofu. Try avocados and banannas. Those are nice and safe.  Pasta, too.  I made my own purees and just left them a little chunkier.
