December 2013 Moms

How many layers does your baby wear?

I met with some girlfriends today and one of them is a new mom. She recently started a new mom group. The leader is Waldorf trained and before the first meeting she told everyone to make sure their baby's are dressed in 3 layers on top, 3 on the bottom, a hat and socks. My friend felt so bad since she has only been dressing her daughter in one layer. I personally think the leader sounds crazy. How do you put 3 layers on their bottom half? My dd wears a onesie, a top, a bottom and socks. What does your child wear? On a side note the leader also told the moms to leave pacifiers at home because they keep the babies from talking talking to you.

  • UHHHHHHHHHHH. I live in AZ, so my LO is in just a onesie most of the time.

  • That sounds like a lot! I have always heard to put baby in one more layer than I am comfortable in. When we go out it's a onesie, top, bottoms and socks. At home it's typically always a footie pajama.

  • We are in Wi so it is still chilly but the leader told my poor friend that her own child has a hat on all the time and she is 18 months.
  • This was only the first class and it sounded good in theory. They were/are going to learn things like baby massage. We told her it might not be a good fit and she will just need to lose the 170 dollars she paid.
  • MD here...I just do a single layer...top, bottom, socks. I honestly hate layering!

  • I'm in MN where it has been very chilly this winter & when leaving the house, LO has usually worn either a sleeper w/hat or onesie/pants outfit w/hat. Lately I skip the hat. I fel really odd doing that with our 30 below temps, but the car seat cover I use along with the blanket I put on top of that has been more than enough. Once I saw he was sweating bullets in there, I backed off the hat & even open the lid for him a bit.

When inside, he just wears a sleeper or onesie/pants outfit with socks, but for now, always long sleeved.

  • Vest and onesie or top, bottoms and socks
  • That seems overkill. I'm in Maine and LO wears a onsie, top, bottoms and socks when we go out. Obviously I put a blanket over her when we go out.
Babies can overheat easily. Your friend needs to trust her instincts and take what she wants from this class and not anymore than that. Also... My son had a binky until he was four and learned to talk better than most.
  • 3 layers would give my baby heat stroke.  The one time I put a sweater on her, she was laying in a pool of sweat when I took her out of the car seat.  And it was 30 degrees outside.  She only wears one layer and I use a blanket.

Only one layer ever. A hat if we're going outside but he screams so I eventually take it off.

Am I a weirdo because he wears footed sleepers 90% of the time? Pants and socks are a PITA.

Not a weirdo... I just happen to be one of those that for myself personally I get OCD about my kid wearing a sleeper suit during the day. I don't judge others in anyway but I can't handle it!! Haha
  • He wears a outfit and a blanket in his carseat. Where the hell do you people live that you need three layers?

**Ugh always stuck in the quote box at work**

Totally understandable. I feel like they are called "sleep and play" for a reason. FWIW, I do change him out of the one he slept in in the morning. I also do like to put real clothes on him but we have a hard time finding pants that aren't way too long. He wears 6 month sleepers but for some reason 3 month pants are way too big. I cant wait til he can just be in a cute onesie and naked legs in the summer!
Yes! Naked baby is a happy baby. Atleast in my LOs case.
  • NY here - he's has an undershirt onesie, a longsleeve onesie, pants, socks if I can keep them on, a hat when we are outside, and a blanket over him in the carseat.  And I am one of those who thinks sleep and plays are for sleep, but have no trouble seeing where other moms find them WAY more helpful than a whole outfit.

  • CT here... My LO is usually in a onesie, long sleeve shirt, pants and socks. If we are going out I put a hooded sweatshirt on him or a hat. We have the shower cap style cover on the car seat that keeps him plenty warm. When it was bitter cold out I used a blanket as well but it's slowly...very slowly, starting to warm up.
  • I'm in maine so it gets cold and I have never done 3 layers and probably never will. Today we are around 30 degrees and she is in a long sleeve onesie and jeans if we go out she will be under th shower cap cover on the car seat.

That teacher sounds like a turd!

I'm sick of having to layer! Where are you spring weather?!

I put LO in a long sleeve onsie, pants and socks. If we go out I put on a hat, jacket and a blanket in the car seat because it is so damn cold.
