Birth Reality-TV

I've been totally obsessed with the British reality show "One Born Every Minute." You can definitely stream it on your computer, if you're not ethically opposed to that. It's a very cool show about a particular birthing center in Northern England and every week there are vignettes with 4 or 5 couples giving birth there. I like it because it's pretty real and graphic. It's been educational and moving to watch the births. Thought some of you might like it as well.

  • I don't like birth shows. They make everything way more dramatic than it normally really is.

  • Sounds like it would be really educational. But here is where that thought sort of crashes and burns for me. I can't really relate to wanting myself giving birth on film, let alone aired for everyone. Like if I watch Survivor, I might say "Oh yeah, I might be up for that". That's not really how I feel about a filmed birth though (I've seen a few). If all goes well for me, this birth will be my first, and well I am quite excited, I'm kinda on the fence about wanting any clear recollections of the process. Please don't misunderstand that as me saying I don't think the birth process is wonderful and worth remembering. I'm just saying its a hot painful mess too. I just cannot relate to a woman who wants video evidence of that. The baby will be proof enough for me.

  • I agree that it's not a choice I would make but, given that the birth experience captured in Hollywood films is the most accessible and is NOTHING like actual birth, I was grateful to see some real women giving birth in a real way. I'm the kind of person that feels more comfortable doing something when I have lots of examples to draw from. This show has filled my pregnant brain with a wider spectrum of what's "normal" than I had before and perhaps I won't be as scared/timid when I have to go through the process myself.

For example. I saw women give birth in tubs, on all fours, screaming, grunting, fast, slow, with and without haemorrhaging, with skin on sklin and without. I also saw the dad's and their range of behaviors were equally comforting.

So in conclusion: Would I ever let strangers film my birth? Only if it resulted in a full college tuition for the tyke. Am I happy these other couples decided to make their birth's public? Yes indeed!

Ha! They asked me when I was pushing if I wanted them to hold the mirror so I could see and I was all, "WTF?  Why on earth would I want to WATCH this?".

I had them take the mirror away when I saw that I had pooped and a piece was stuck to my butt. No thanks.

  • I used to watch birthing shows all the time with my mom, but I will say that the real thing is a different experience entirely.  I was present when my nephew was born and saw everything.  EVERYTHING.  Now I'm 7 weeks pregnant and looking forward to the same thing later this year.  Not sure I'll be watching any shows between now and then, but I will be looking into a birthing class for me and hubs.
