Quick rundown of our history: my LO is 2 1/2 months. He was born 3 weeks early after a complication and was in the NICU for a week (only minor concerns). After his discharge, he didn't gain much weight at which point the pediatrician recommended pumping and all bottle feedings. We also supplemented with a bit of formula. He had tongue tie. After some stalling on the pediatrician end of things, we finally had him seen by an ENT and he received a frenectomy at around 6 weeks. He then had to have a repeat one a couple weeks later as they did not snip enough. His latch improved and he transferred more. At about two months, we finally transferred over to all breastfeeding. All the while (throughout all of this), he has had acid reflux problems. We put him on zantac at 5 weeks or so. After a month we were concerned that his reflux was worsening, so we started prevacid just over a week ago. Although he has more happy moments, he continues to be extremely gassy and fussy after feedings. At times, I can distract him from his fussiness by placing him on his bouncy chair, etc., but often he will scream and cry for quite some time. We have tons of wet diapers and one bowel movement a day (which is usually the appropriate color/consistency), and he is gaining weight, although not as quickly as he was when we were doing all bottle feedings. At this point, the pediatrician doesn't seem concerned about his weight gain, though he is below the 3rd percentile. She believes his gas is probably due to his reflux so we have been treating the reflux I have been doing everything in my power to help him be less gassy, with no luck. It does not appear associated with my diet, but it is hard to know for sure. I am vegetarian, so I've been hesitant to give up dairy completely to test the hypothesis, but I have given it up for a few days with no shift. For a while I was concerned it might be my supply so I took fenugreek, which just made things worse (I developed oversupply), so I stopped that. My concern is that maybe he is taking in air during nursing sessions? I try to get him to burp in between and after nursing, but I almost never produce one. Does anyone have any recommendations at all to help us? I'm grasping at straws at this point. Sorry for the stream of consciousness. I was so happy to get him back to nursing but his fussiness has really made it a challenge. I'm writing this quickly as he is sleeping in his moby!
