  • I am really anti-guns, to the point that we throw away any guns that come with toys that DS1 receives. When DH was young, his Mom used to cut all the toy guns off his army guys. I used to laugh about that, but now I could see myself doing that too. We've done a decent job avoiding guns in shows/movies, but he still seems drawn to them and it bothers me.

My Mom just texted me that DS1 wants to play a "shooters" game today where he is making gun-like things from blocks. Apparently, he does not know the word "gun" and is just calling them "shooters." I'm not willing to give up and let him play gun games. I told her to tell him that we don't shoot things in this family and that it isn't nice. I really wish I could just shield him from all violence, even if only by sheer force of will...

  • @Cambury108 I'm with you for the most part, although I do love dipping sauces (ketchup, BBQ, honey). I usually eat my burger without the bun or anything else on it. I like to cut it up and eat it with a fork.

I also have a severe hatred of pickles, mustard, and relish. I hate smelling them or having them touch my hands.

  • @MissyC979 I'm going to leave most of what you said alone today just because OMG the gun debate again.

I'll just say I think its more dangerous to shield him from the existence of guns than to explain to him that guns are not toys and we don't play with them.  If he came across a real one for any reason and decided it was a toy and mommy wasn't around to stop him from playing this time......I mean....that's where I'm coming from.
I totally get that argument and it scares the crap out of me. I agree that we probably do need to teach him about them at some point (not sure about the age) in case he does come across one at a friends house, etc.

It's probably alot more scary for you having not been around guns yourself, too.  We have so many guns I don't even know how many anymore...We love to go to the shooting range and my husband is a LEO so he practices for his own safety as well.  So I feel like our DD will grow up with a healthy fear about the dangers of guns, but also a healthy understanding of their appropriate use.
True. I've never even touched a gun and it's never really been a thing in my home or my husband's growing up. It mostly just bothers me that DS1 seems drawn to the idea of shooting things. I know it's probably just a kid thing or something he learns from the other kids at preschool (he's four).

I was probably just deluding myself into thinking I could shield him from this to keep him safe, when in reality we should probably address it at some point.

  • @Cambury108‌ I agree with your hate for mustard. It's the most disgusting thing ever and the smell makes me vomit! I can taste it in everything, even when people tell me I won't be able to! Yuck! So my UO... I HATE toddlers with pacifiers!! I get it if it's something they just use as a comfort to sleep, but walking through the grocery store with a pacifier in their mouth - NO! My friends son is going to be 3 in a few months and EVERY picture she posts on fb of him has the damn paci in his mouth.
I'm not a big fan of pacifiers for toddlers, but I don't judge. I think once you pass a certain age, it gets infinitely harder to break the pacifier. I feel for those parents trying to do it with older toddlers, especially when the child uses the pacifier for sleep. With DS1, we tried to break it pretty early so we wouldn't have to deal with it during the toddler years and we'll probably do the same with DS2.

  • MissyC979 Ketchup and BBQ sauce are my favorite things ;)

ballerina10 yes anything with mustard or mayo in the recipe I just can't....YUCK! My two older kids know if they want either of those things on their sandwiches they need to do it themselves or they are getting my plain version of whatever. I have gotten mustard on me before and gagged so bad I couldn't get to the sink fast enough!!!!!
Also I totally 100% agree with this about the pacifiers. I won't even lie, I use them till the toddler years but in the house and for sleep ONLY. I can't stand when people let their kids have them 100% of the time after they are able to walk, drives me batty.

  • @Cambury108 My ex-husband's wife has a genuine fear of sauces. She can't eat anything liquidy to the point that ketchup has to be removed from the table at a restaurant. It's weird. So I don't think your aversion is that strange.

  • Risalyn222 Yes SO hard, I have done it twice, my DD was much easier than my DS but I will admit at that time I didn't work so I took it from her at 2.5 and with my DS I worked and I had guilt and I didn't wanna be the "bad/mean" mom so I let him have it till slightly past 3. Made it much harder to get rid of.

We gave our binky's to the babies in the mail and then after nap we went back to the mailbox and the binky fairy left a gift for being a big boy/girl. Worked both times for me!!!

My DD I just had to do the mailbox trick and we were done. My son we had to work up to the mailbox by making his binky's stop working first. We clipped the nipple so he couldn't suck on them anymore and told him they were broken and that the fairy needed to fix them for the little babies, after that he was OK since they were "broken" anyhow.
  • I hate toddlers with paci's as well. But, my toddler still has one for nap and bed. I can't wait to get rid of it! This shit is hard.

This is us... DS1 turns two in 4 weeks and I think we are going to start trying nap and bedtime without it. Its really hard though with lo using a binky, so its not an 'out of sight out of mind ' thing.

  • BootsOrHearts alas I will never have a good UO even when I think it is, someone always trumps me LOL ;) I tried!!! That is very weird about the ketchup thing, I get you don't like it but man I need ketchup on like 80% of what I eat so I couldn't dine with her.
  • On the paci thing, I don't think it's a big deal. No kid ever went to college with their paci. Or maybe they did, but I'm guessing they aren't getting a lot of dates. *shrugs*

  • To tangent from the the condiment diatribe train, I love Miracle Whip. (DH insists that this is a UO.)

I don't think it's always interchangeable with Mayo though. Each has its own use.

I read this at first as COOL WHIP and I was going to say 'let's make out' but then I re-read it. Meh, it's ok. I'm all about the non-dairy whipped topping.

I think office supplies should be non-negotiable. I see so many staff members asking for special orders of pens or white out or a certain kind of notebook, etc. We have a supply closet absolutely filled to the brim with enough supplies for everyone in the office 10X over. And yet every week new supplies are ordered. Don't like the stock pens? Bring one from home. I feel like a lot of money is wasted and also question why we already have so many supplies in the closet anyway.

Ha! I don't care that much but this sure turned into a rant.
  • I don't like a lot of the terms used on here ( IE sanctimommy, andplusalso, etc) and I don't use them.

I like Sanctimommy but I agree with you on some of them for sure. "Sorrynotsorry" is so over used I just roll my eyes when I see it. I know this is an UO since so many people seem to love using that one.

  • Not letting your child drink underage doesn't make alcohol taboo though. If they grow up seeing responsible drinking by adults, they are much more likely to handle themselves appropriately than if they started drinking in high school no matter if they were with you or not. Anyway, my UO is for high school parties and similar situations.

YES I forgot about that one!

I think Vera Bradley bags (and lunch boxes, cell phone cases, pencils, keychains wtf why is there everything?) are ugly. They all look like old lady curtains and I dont undertand why so many people love them.

That being said, I did buy a Vera Bradley diaper bag yesterday because its a cross body and the print is tolerable. It's used and the price was good. I just dont get the hype.

I used to hate them too, but now I'm converted. They just have so many nice pockets and help me organize things like sunglasses, cellphones, etc. I hate how jumbled my stuff gets in my other purses...

I've seen weight loss, depression, somebody just suggested having one for every single kind of feeding you can do for a child. That's a lot. I mean, how many moms are job hunting? That's really specific.
