Unexpected home birth: Update

Update: thank you everyone for the support. Katie Rose had her first appt today with our regular pediatrician, and he is very impressed by her progress. She list very little weight after birth, & what she did lose she has already gained back. She is a nursing pro! She is very alert and healthy, & has been an absolute dream. She lets mommy get her rest, too. :). Her brother Connor is so excited to be a big brother, & gives her kisses every day. Thanks again for all of the kudos and support. I have an amazing husband and am do lucky and grateful he was there with me through it all.

Original post:
I went into labor early Monday morning. Contractions started just before 1am at 2-3 mins apart lasting for about 70 seconds & I waited an hr, monitoring them before calling my friend to come watch my 2 year old son. For the past 3 weeks, I've had contractions come on just like that at the same intervals and last for hours, but have had no other signs and eventually they would dissipate. My OB appts have shown no change in my cervical length or thickness, & I've stayed at 2 cm dilated for 3 weeks. The first hr the contractions were rough, but not increasing in intensity until after I called my friend. The only difference this time was that I had to keep going to the bathroom that hour. Just after I got ahold of friend, the timing and intensity ramped up. At 2:11am I spoke to her, at 2:30 I spoke with the physician on call and told her we would be leaving for the hospital as soon as my friend arrived. Up until this point, I still thought we would be able to make it to the hospital. 10 mins later, the contractions were right on top of each other, but no bloody show, no mucus plug. Nothing.

At 2:57 I am on the floor with a birthing ball, trying to find relief from the contractions, and it has felt like hours since I spoke with my friend. Right then my water breaks. I still thought we might have some time, just wishful thinking I guess. My husband helps me to the toilet and now I see all the bloody show that was missing. Sitting on the toilet seemed to be the only place of some relief for me at this point. My friend gets there finally, and my husband comes to bring me to the car. As soon as he stands me up, I feel this intense pressure ramp up inside me, and I tell him he needs to call 911. He tries to move me back in the bedroom, and I just know I can't make it there. 911 puts him on hold, & I can no longer stand up, & the only thing I can think of is to get in the bathtub. There is rails on the wall, & as I try and get myself down, my baby starts to crown and is coming out very quickly. I throw my hand down and stop her from falling and am stuck in a squat, holding her in, trying to get myself down to the tub. My husband jumps in and finally gets someone on the phone. He asks for help and the dispatcher tells him to be patient because he is not the one for our location, or some BS like that. (911 services when you live in Los Angeles county is rough. They never know whether to send the call to LA City or county, & that's what the first dispatcher was hung up on. Instead of just recognizing the need for instructions at that moment, they were concerned about location.) Hubby just wings it, and helps me down, and tells me to push. Her shoulder was stuck, but he helps shift her a bit, catches her, remembers to swipe away the mucus from her nose and mouth, and gets her on my belly. I grab her and keep her in place, and now he finally has someone on the line who can help. This new dispatcher instructs him from there, & when the placenta comes, tells him to hold it level with the baby. Paramedics arrive and my friend lets them in. The fire station is very close to my house, about 5 mins, & they were shocked that they didn't get there in time. The paramedics were awesome, and took great care of me and my little girl.

Katherine Rose was born at 3:05am on March 24. Decided to go with Rose instead of Grace, because our front door has a stained glass rose in it. The way she shot into the world like a bolt of lightning, & being born at home gives me the feeling that it was kind of her way of telling me who she is. I had been active all day Sunday, shopping, doing house work, with no signs of impending labor. This birth experience was nothing like my first with my son. I'm still in shock I gave birth at home with no medical personnel there. All the training we had was our birthing classes 2 years ago at the hospital we had our son at. Katie Rose is healthy, 8lbs 12 oz, & 20 inches long.

Best wishes to all of you moms still expecting. If you find yourself in a similar place, don't panic. You can do it. You are stronger than you give yourself credit for. That's one thing I have taken away from this experience.

  • That's crazy! So happy everyone is doing well! I'm a little peeved at 911 for you. Seriously, they put your hubby on hold?!? You're a rock star!
  • Whhhhhhhoooooaa! Crazy! Nice work lady! Congratulations!

I used to live in LA and had similar problems with 911. I think if you call from a cell phone it goes to a CHiPs dispatch. If you call from a landline it goes to normal 911 dispatch. You think they'd have this figured out by now.

So glad you are all safe!
  • Crazy story! Congrats!

On the 911 dispatcher though,  that is unbelievable.  What if you had been being chased with a knife or had a cord prolapse.  Unbelievable.
