December 2013 Moms

Whoa!

Tornado just damaged houses on our street... Like 6 houses away the damage starts. Out in Cali we don't have basements so I was huddled in our pantry with both kids flipping out because it was so loud... At least if we got stuck in there we could eat :) This is CA not the Midwest, what is up with the tornados - 2 in the last month...

But in all seriousness - I don't want to go through that again. Luckily no one was hurt in any of the houses! Now the news teams and helicopters are everywhere and being loud...

  • Holy moly! I'm like an hour from you (Brentwood) hope everyone is ok!
  • I'm in sac too. We were paying close attention to this.
  • Basements aren't allow in CA due to earthquake factor. Only really really old houses have them still.

  • Midwesterner here and they still freak me out. Green skies give me a panic attack!! I won't live in a house without a basement - especially in the Midwest!!! Our last house had the greatest built in tornado shelter in the basement - covered by 4' of concrete. Then jobs forced a move. Ugh. But still a basement. Stay safe, guys!! And I've heard of ppl drowning in their basements during a tornado from the flash flooding - so a basement isn't the quick remedy people think it is. A centralized, windowless room is really the safest bet if you aren't sure if it is a rain wrapped or dry tornado. :-)

Glad everyone is ok! Scary stuff!

This here is so true. In '08 our city flooded and our house happened to be in the worst hit part. The night it happened there was a tornado 2 miles west of town and 3 feet of water in our basement and the river that's usually a block away was brushing against our next door neighbors house. Scariest night of my life. So, I'd take pantry any day. Plus there is food.
  • Wow! Glad you are all ok! I can't imagine how scary that must have been.
  • Here is a pic my neighbor took as it was approaching our houses. Not even commenting how stupid it was to take it (from the second floor even), that's a whole different thread, but the pic is cool.
