A few days ago I posted thinking my son had become efficient. Now im not so sure.
He is 6 weeks old and will nurse for a few minutes. In those few minutes he will unlatch many times and either relatch himself or seemingly push away and ill have to push him back on the breast. After a few minutes of yhis he will completely refuse and go to sleep. I try to tickle him to keep him up so he will nirse but it doesnt work. About 30-60 min later he will act like he is statving!
He is growing great so he is definitely not starving.
He spits up a ton and is gassy (I often give him gas drops) Maybe he no longer likes nursing because of this?
Alsoni had OS before and now that its better I get the feeling that he is upset about it - he seems to prefer gulping! (Maybe thats in my head tho)
I feel like nursing is an all day and all night battle. Last night we didnt sleep at all (after a few nights of 4-5 hour stretch es! Ugh!)
Any idea what might be going on and how I can improve this? These battles are making it tough for me to nap or eat right throughout the day like I was doing before.
It could be 6 week growth spurt coupled with him being more efficient.
Is there a place where you could do a weighed feeding? (Like a BF'ing support group, and LC's office or your pedi's office. Or you could rent a scale from a pharmacy/durable medical equip. palce and do a few of them at different times.) That would give you an idea how much he's actually getting and whether he's sleeping because he's full or what's going on.
I don't remember exactly when, but my LO did go through a period after correcting an OS where he would get "mad" that the milk didn't come out as fast anymore. He would pull on my nip and fuss. I just kept switching sides frequently to trigger more letdowns & eventually he got used to it.
I second the growth spurt possibility. There's typically one around 6 weeks. For DD and I it was a couple nights of non-stop nursing and frustration with nursing. It went back to normal soon after that though, and all her time nursing then regulated my supply to what she needed.
Why didnt I think of doing a weighted feed! Good idea!
Growth spurt makes a lot of sense though I feel like I just finished with one! I hope this passes soon and I can start getting sleep a nit again (wishful thinking I know!!)
