Also, where are you that there are 200 people in line at the DMV? I've never seen a DMV that could possibly hold that many people.
Here, you have to stand in line for an hour outside of the DMV. Then it's 2 hours waiting inside the DMV. I don't think they technically can hold that many people... you basically feel like a canned sardine
WTF are you? I've been to the main DMV office in Chicago more times than I can count and never had that happen.
Southern California. The ones in Northern California are maybe an hour wait total but I've got in and out in 20 minutes there.
Ok, so I just looked up a picture of the DMV. No way I have I ever seen this: Even the testing sites aren't that big.
ETA: this is what I am used to:
I'm in Northern California, I have been in 3 in my area and they all look like the top picture. San Francisco is the worst one. It has sort of its own block for the building and parking lot and the whole area is packed with people and cars.
@yellowbird219 I miss PA and being able to do 99% of dmv crap on-line or at the notary's office. I think the only time I've been to the actual Dmv was when I took my drivers test and my motorcycle license exam.

i am so beyond jealous of everyone with easy DMV visits! I'm in Atlanta and if you don't show up and get in line before it opens (and sometimes even if you do that) be prepared to spend at least a few hours there. they only have maybe half of the windows open and the stereotype of incompetent rude DMV employees totally applies here.
I grew up in Michigan and we don't have the "DMV" it is called the Secretary of State, weird. The Alaska DMV line was always really short, but in return you have to live in Alaska. The Denver DMV is a nightmare!!!
I fucking hate the dmv. The second to last I was there, I fainted from low blood sugar standing in line to get a ticket (wait in line an hour to get a ticket to wait another two hours or so..) when I managed to drag myself off the line to a bench and waited it out, not one person stopped to see if I was okay everyone was just happy to get a spot closer to the front of the line. Then I was going to get back on line and was told I was too late they were closing and not giving out anymore tickets. Seriously??! I was there. Everyone there clearly witnessed me faint but acted like they didn't.
I live in a place where people have no manners.
Some man rammed his grocery cart into my bump the other day (after knocking a bunch of stuff off of a shelf and not picking it up) and didn't even apologize, just muttered something under his breath about me needing to move out of his way. Another time I was entering a store with my baby in the stroller and some guy pushed in front of us, ran in the door, leaving the door to nearly slam on the stroller if I didn't jump in the way first. Some pregnant girl behind me saw the whole thing and ripped the guy a new one. The look on his face was priceless. No apology there either.
So, for those of you who don't have to renew your license for like 50 years, are there a bunch of 60-somethings running around your town with their 16-year-old photo on their license? I'm so confused!
I'm in PA so it seems like we need to renew constantly as opposed to when I was in NY and it was a much longer time span (I think) and we have to get a new picture each time.

Also, I thought this thread would be more entertaining given its length. Oh well.
Pretty much unless you go for some other reason. I had to get a new license picture when I changed my last name, but I know my parents' pictures are from like 20 years ago. A lot of people will do it before then though because stores and stuff will hassle you if you look drastically different, but technically you don't have to.
Another thing to think about, is I'm not sure what you are wearing or how far along you are...but you pretty much have to be 9 months and pushing for me to assume you are pregnant. I live in fear of the "Thanks but I'm not actually pregnant" moment. Sorry Charlie!
In Northern VA you have a line to just be allowed into the building to get a ticket with your queue number. Rain, snow, heat, it doesn't matter. It took my husband 2 hours to get his car registered and it took me an hour and a half wait just to take a computerized learners permit test.
VA also doesn't do appointments, and that includes drivers tests. It's a "get here and hope for the best" system.
When we lived in Maryland, the county I lived in had 1 MVA. That was an all day event and god help you if you forgot to bring water and snacks. I think the longest I've had to wait was 4 hours. I did get to to go an "express" MVA that only did maybe 4 or 5 services when I changed my name and it only took 10 minutes.
Do other states not do DMV appointments? I live in LA, my DMV is packed, but I always make an appointment and am usually out of there in a half hour. Plus, you can make your appointment online so it takes like two seconds!

Wow... I guess I take our DMV for granted. Here in Birmingham, AL we have a bunch of them spread around. The one I go to definitely does not have any chairs.... And the longest I have waited was probably 30 minutes... and that was at the end of the month when everyone was getting their license plate renewed AND the line was out the door.
@stephross88 - Where are you in Atlanta? I just had to get my license at the Canton DMV last month....it SUCKED.
I am in Alpharetta, grew up in Marietta so always went to the Canton Rd DMV but since moving to Alpharetta I go to the one in Cumming off 400 and it's a *little* better but not much.

Gotta love New York!

When I had to go to the social security office for my name change after I got married, 6 hours. I was not a happy camper!
