Formula Temperature

For those of us that are dealing with lots of spit up, have you found the temperature of the formula to make any difference in the amount of spit up? I have found that she seems to spit up less when we do room temp formula vs warmed formula. Does anyone use cold formula? Has this helped with spit up?

Re: Formula Temperature

  • I thought formula should always be at room temp anyway...? That's how she gets hers.

  • Mia was being a horribly messy eater and spitting up a lot.  We realized that daycare was warming her bottles and we were doing room temperature.  We asked daycare to not warm her bottles anymore, and it has drastically reduced the issues.  I think for her it was the going back and forth between the two.  Warm probably would have been fine too, but I'm lazy and if she'll take room temp just as well why add an extra step.
  • So glad you posted this...we've had spit up issues from day one (she was EBF until about 3 months). We've been warming her formula so maybe we will try room temp. Only thing is that we use the filtered water from the refridgerator so it comes out cooler.

Can you fill a few bottles ahead of time so that it gets up to room temp?

I could, that would work. How long can a bottle sit out?
  • @AlisonM12‌ just fill the bottles with water to set out. Then add formula as needed.

Thanks everyone for all the responses!

This!  Don't mix the formula in because then it's only good for like 2 hours I think?  Just leave the water in bottles on the counter.  This is how we do daycare.  I pack four bottles full of water plus her little formula container with it measured out for each bottle.
  • @dobrydney and @mskatiep - Thanks! I'm going to try this and see if it makes a difference in her spit up.
  • Interesting. LO still spits up a lot, but I haven't as yet noticed a correlation with formula temp. I'll keep an eye on it. We do generally warm chilled formula to high room temperature.

I would have asked this on the formula group, but my join request has yet to be approved....

  • We are a little strange and give our lo ice cold "milkshakes" strait from the fridge or my cooler bag when we are out. She eats on demand and is very unpredictable as far as how much she will eat ( 1/2 oz to 4) She does spit up some, so I don't think a cold temp really helps. Just my experience
  • I actually tried giving her cold bottles yesterday and she didn't spit up at all. She even seemed to enjoy them more. She showed no signs of belly discomfort either. Hopefully the days of spitting up all the time are over.
