Two Under 2

Potty training LO one.

DS is 22 months and has been showing interest in the potty for a few months. He always wants to flush, put his potty seat on the potty and sit on it, even takes toilet paper and pretends to wipe himself. He recently started pointing to his diaper when he wants it changed. He dosen't talk much yet so he can't tell me when he needs to go. DD is almost three months old now and obviously still takes up a lot of my time. I don't want to miss the window of potty training but I also feel like I don't have enough time to fully concentrate on it yet. Other Moms have said to not even try potty training until he is older anyways. Any advice or thoughts? TIA!

Re: Potty training LO one.

  • I'm a big fan of following the kids lead. If I were you I would be having him sit on the potty and see what happens. DD is also at this stage and right now we are letting her sit when ever she asks plus first thing in the morning, before and after lunch, before and after nap, before bath and before bed. Sometimes she goes sometimes she doesn't we may try a push before #2 gets here otherwise, I will just be taking care of #2 in the bathroom when #1 is sitting on the potty. We do try to sit for 5-10 min each time.

  • Depending on how needy #2 is it may be easier to do PTing before DD is mobile. I just PTed DD this month and it's a bit hard with DS learning to walk and climb stairs at the same time.

  • I don't think PTing has to be this huge event that people make it out to be. Just start asking him if he wants to sit on the potty whenever you change his diaper. If he goes, great, if not, that's fine too, he's learning and he'll figure it out when he's ready. He's not even 2 yet, and boys are typically later than girls. I wouldn't worry about missing "the window". It doesn't need to be a stressful thing. Personally I just don't get the "3day method" or whatever other nonsense people are doing to rush their kids to be PTed.

  • If you don't feel you have the time to really concentrate on potty training right now then don't do it.  You can encourage his sitting on the potty and talk about it but keep him in diapers right now.  I personally do not believe there is a magical window.

I potty trained DD at 26 mos when DS was about 6 mos old.  It is better if your LO is on a bit of schedule and not yet mobile.  Good luck!
  • My DS is 13 months olds and we started elimination communication with him about a month ago and then turned it into a light potty training and he use the potty for all but about two times each day.  He totally did it himself because he LOVED being in the bathroom.  I got so much flack from other moms because he wasn't the typical age.  I brushed it aside.  If my child wants to pee on a potty I will not say no.  We make no big hoopla over it, he just usually pees when we pee.  With me being pregnant this works our since I go all the time.
