Hard day- hardest thing I've ever had to do

So today we found out that the man who worked in the office at my school and drove a bus (the kids loved and adored him) died of lung cancer last night. They gave all the teachers a letter to read to the students and we have grief counselors on hand, but telling my 3rd graders that news was the hardest thing I have ever done. I was crying and had to watch some of them who rode his bus break down into hysteria. 8-9 year olds. I just wanted to hug them all and make it ok. One of my boys in my class was inconsolable. I hate this. T&P for my school and my kids that they are able to deal with this sad news. I feel so broken right now. There is nothing worse for me than an upset child that I cant make feel better.

  • That's such a tough age to go through something like that. It's hard to explain and hard to understand your feelings at that age. I'm sorry you had to see all of them like that. That had to be hard!

  • Aww that's so sad, esp that the kids loved him so much. Sounds like he was a special man. I don't know how much time they're giving you to address his death in class, but one thing I've seen be helpful before is if students are given time to write a "goodbye" letter to him to kind of help get out their feelings. My condolences to all of you!
  • I'm sooo sorry :( how awful. It's hard enough to share that kind of news with adults, let alone children.

  • As a teacher I completely understand. Its the worst feeling ever when you break down and you need to comfort your kiddos as well.  I'm so sorry!! Thinking about you.
  • My heart breaks for you, your students, and the bus driver's family. T&Ps for all of you guys!

  • Thanks guys. My kids were ok after specials. Many of them met with counselors and were able to draw pictures and write down their feelings. The counselors will be there again tomorrow. I love my kids and it just really hurt me to see them so upset. I hope that as a school we can work through this and help the kids understand it all.
