Non vaccinated relatives visiting

I am not trying to stir the pot or re-energize a vaccine debate. My issue is this: my brother, SIL, and nephew and niece will be visiting from New Zealand in July. They chose to not vaccinate either child for anything. I plan on fully vaccinating Violet on schedule but when they come to visit she will only be about 3 months old. What precautions should I take if any with having these 2 unvaccinated children around my daughter? I don't want to be harsh or tell them they can't see her but i am concerned they could spread any number of diseases having just traveled through 3 major airports. Thoughts? In no way would I ask that they vaccinate. It's their decision for their kids. I just don't want their decision affecting my baby.

  • Totally agree with talking to your pediatrician. That is a valid concern and they can probably advise you best.

  • It's really a pretty low risk situation. Fortunately even though they've chosen not to vaccinate most people do and incidence of diseases are pretty low. I would maybe be more vigilant than normal about cold like symptoms.

  • At least by 3 months you LO will have some vaccinations such as the TDAP. (If you are keeping with the vaccination schedule.) Of course as PP said to talk to your pediatrician.

This. Luckily the chances of your family members having a disease they don't know about is very low.

  • I would imagine that most diseases that can be picked up in an airport won't be covered by vaccines anyway, but this is a really good question for your pediatrician.   Honestly, I don't know what I would do in your shoes.

  • Wouldn't worry to much, these diseases are rare, colds and flus would be a bigger concern. Practice basic precautions, hand washing, no face kissing, can't spend your life afraid of germs. Also if you plan to BF that will provide some extra immunity also.

By 3 months on a normal schedule baby should have:
    DTaP (Diptheria, Tetanus, Pertussis)
    HiB (Haemophillus Influenza)
    PCV 13 (Pneumococcal)
    IPV (polio)
    HepB
    Rotavirus

That covers some major bases. It also won't be flu season, so that's less of a worry. Honestly the only things to worry about are Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Chicken Pox (ETA: Hep A, but babies tend to do well with that). Unless they've had a known exposure or concerning lesions I wouldn't stress about these too much. Talk with your pedi, but that's what I would say. If there's a major outbreak or they seem sick, you'd need to re-evaluate.
As the resident Kiwi I would like to point out that it may not be flu season there, but it is here!! I just got my flu jab last week.

Pandamom416 do you mind me asking what part of NZ they are coming from? different parts have different things to worry about - much like the states I would say. For example there is one town here that has a higher (note higher - not high!) rate of pertussis.

I agree with PP that as baby will be 3 months, baby's shots should be up to date but do check with your Dr.

  • There will be lots of times where your child could be exposed to someone who is carrying diseases that your LO is not yet fully immune to, and you may never even know it.
All you can do is stick with the vax schedule you've chosen and be wise about hand washing, etc.
I agree with pp about no face kisses, and be diligent about toy cleaning. In the end, even fully vaxed kids could end up with something nasty. It's a part of life, but hopefully not one you will have to deal with in your home!! Good luck!!

  • Thanks for all the replies. They are coming from Tauranga. I know the chance of Violet getting something from them is relatively - my new mama spines are rising though and while I can't protect her from every germ in the world I can try to not to expose her willingly. I really appreciate all the advice !
