Babies: 9 - 12 Months

CIO and weaning?

DS is 11 months and still drinks a ton of formula (around 34 oz a day). He gets 3 meals of solids and 2 snacks a day and is on all table food, but isn't eating a lot, even though we give him bottles after meals and not before.
I just started cutting down on how much he is getting in each bottle from 6 to 5 oz.

He just started sleeping through the night the last week or so, but still wakes up at 5 am EVERY DAY. He won't go back to sleep unless I give him 2 to 4 oz to drink, but then puts himself to sleep.

Should I try CIO to get him back to sleep at 5 am? He seems to get really really worked up and I am just not sure I can do it, but he gets even more worked up if I go get him and try to soothe him without feeding him. Plus I am afraid cutting out his formula during the day will make him wake more.

Any suggestions how to start weaning him when he still drinks so much?

I wouldn't do CIO at 5am. If all it takes is a small bottle to get him back to sleep I'd just keep doing it, especially since you said he gets really worked up. I think some babies just get up early, too. DD varies between 6:30 and 7:00, but this morning woke up at 5:30.

  • Definately not CIO at 5am. Feed him & let him go back to sleep. Why deprive a baby of food if he's hungry?? I don't get that.
  • I would still feed him. He will probably wean himself as you wean from the bottle.

  • Thank you ladies.
  • As the others said feed him, waking at 5am is showing a need.  Feed him and enjoy some extra sleep!  Don't mess with a good thing!
