DH's thoughts on Tristan

On Saturday we were leaving home and walked by a mother and her two children.  She cautioned one of them "Tristan, don't do x,y,z."  Which got me to thinking about the name.  I love the mythology aspect of it and I asked DH what he thought.  It sounds okay with our last name, and works well with our son's name, etc.

DH: I don't think either of us is good looking enough to have a son named Tristan.

  • Haha, funny. The only Tristan I ever knew was nerdy/dorky: frumpy clothes, disheveled hair, etc. Definitely not one of the better looking kids.

  • LOLOL!

FTR, that's DH's set-in-stone name if we ever had a boy

  • Lol...I freaking love this name and have it on my "I wish it wasn't given to girls" list. Legends of the Fall is also one of my all time favorite movies, so that may play a part. I ended up with a cousin that used it, so we crossed it off our list. You tell your DH that he's wrong! I think your DS could totally be a Tristan, so certainly a hypothetical future child could be!

  • Tristan was our original name, but we had too many people say that its a girls name..and I decided it was a little feminine, so we are still nameless!!

but its still such a good name in my book
If you knew better, you'd do better.
  • I just don't see the appeal of the name. I know it's totally boy but it still sounds very feminine to me.

  • LOL!

I know one 5 year old Tristan, he's got curly brown hair, freckles, and blue eyes. A doll.

The only adult Tristan I know is a personal trainer at the gym I used to work with. Super smart, very fit guy. So yeah, I have a very positive association with the name, and I don't get why people think it's feminine.

  • ^^ lol at the mere mortals comment

I just do not like the name Tristan at all. It's very popular for boys where I live, but it just seems girly to me.
  • The one Tristan I know is a girl, and one of the worst people I've ever met. Based on that alone, it's NMS and I wouldn't name any of my kiddos that. I think it's definitely preferable on a boy either way though. If it wasn't for my personal negative conotation with it, I wouldn't hate it.

I never understand when people say it sounds feminine...it makes zero sense.

Is it because it sounds similar to Kristen?
It must be.  But to me, it sounds really similar to Christian, and I haven't heard anyone claim that sounded like a feminine name.

I will admit, the s gives it a "softer" sound, which I tend to like in boy names (Ellis, Linus, August) but not every name has to be Butch, Bruce, or Rock to make it masculine.
