September 2014 Moms

Brutal honesty, please.

Expecting nothing less, I figured I would come to my lovely, but brutally honest when needed, Sept '14 mommas to answer my question about a name I've fallen in love with.

I recently discovered the name Fallyn or Fallon and I love it, do y'all think it's too yooneek? (Pronounced Fall-Lynn)
I think I would use it like this:
Lucy Fallyn/Fallon or Fallyn/Fallon Lucille
what do y'all think, yay/nay?

  • I'm really not a fan, but I LOVE Lucy! If you love Fallon, use it as a middle name (keeping oh mind the Jimmy Fallon connection, haha!).

  • Jimmy Fallon's love child?
Oh man!  :)) I didn't even think of Jimmy Fallon, so I guess the spelling of Fallon is out (which I didn't really like it that way anyway!) But thanks for pointing this out @12jemjem34 #:-S

  • To me it sounds more like a boy's name, probably because I actually know a guy named Fallon. Never heard it for a girl.  NMS, but if you love it, I like it much better as a middle name. Really not a fan of it as a first name.

  • I would worry about nicknames if you happen to have a clumsy child. Obviously children will give cruel nicknames at times anyway but that just seems like you are making it a little too easy.
  • Fallon was on my list for a second. I like it well enough. Fallyn, absolutely not.

  • The reasoning being the fallyn is I feel like Fallon could get mispronounced more? I don't know, it was just a name I came across that stood out to me! Thanks for y'alls input! I guess the search of names continues. @everyusernameistaken Lucy is definite, I am FAR too in love with the name to not use it lol.
    Thanks y'all!

I grew up with a girl named Fallon. It's nms, but if you want to use it, I'd go with that spelling. I'm not into throwing y's in to names to make them different. Fallon is already unique on it's own.

ETA: Just did some quick poking around because I was wondering what the origins of the name were. It's an Irish name, considered unisex, & the correct pronunciation of Fallon is Fal-en(Jimmy says his ln wrong, yo.)

  • It's the name of a female radio personality here in Mpls (KDWB, I think?), but it is pronounced like fall-lynn (assuming you pronounce fall like the season fall), more like faal-lynn (like Jimmy fallon).

It's okay.  I like traditional names so I wouldn't pick it, but I'd also never think "ew, what's up with that name?" I like it.

I didn't just stick the Y in there for cutsies, because I agree with you 100%, I found it that way the first time I came across it, and after looking into it found other ways of spelling it like Fallon. I like the Fallyn more because I'd prefer to be pronounced Fall Lynn, without running the risk of constant mispronunciation. But you are completely right I'm still on the hunt for a name.

  • When I was a kid, a friend of a friend's name was Fallon, but pronounced like Jimmy Fallon's last name. I actually thought it was kind of cool. Totally agree with everyone here about the 'Y' spelling, though.
  • Jimmy Fallon's love child?

This was exactly my first thought as well.

Yes! I listen to this radio show all the time so the name didn't sound weird to me (must have gotten used to hearing it). Yes, on the show it is pronounced like Jimmy Fallon.

I like it spelled "Fallon" better than with the "y".

When I see Fallyn, I automatically want to pronounce it like Jimmy Fallon's last name. I think there would constantly be mispronunciation and misspelling. It may be alright if you choose it for a middle name, since mn's aren't normally used. But, not a first name...that's just a pain for your kid.

Nope. That won't be happening either way, sorry. Either spelling, IMO, will be pronounced like Jimmy Fallon before anyone would think to say it like Fall Lynn.

Yes, I agree with that -- Fall-lynn is not how anybody will pronounce that, regardless of how you spell it, because that would be phonetically incorrect. Everybody will pronounce if like Jimmy Fallon, whether you spell it Fallon or Fallyn.

I'm still so confused.  Fallon is not pronounced like Jimmy Fallon??? You want it pronounced like Fallen?? Like "I've fallen and I can't get up." Then I don't think that is intuitive from the Fallon spelling and I think it will definitely get mispronounced.

Fallyn - just no. When I saw that spelling I thought of "Filene" like Filene's Basement. Or Faw-Leen.  Just nms.

The more I look at Fallon, I think of Falcon.
The Fallon I grew up with was always "Fal-en" never "Fal-on". I've also seen is spelled as Fallen. The "a" is Fallon is pronounced like the "a" in hat, not like the "a" in fall.

I prefer Fallon to Fallen. The -on will get pronounced like you want most of the time anyway, just because it's easier to say & that's what people default to.

I'm also thinking that if it takes this much discussion & analyzing, maybe it's time to move to another name ;)

  • I love Lucy, Lucille called. Lucy is cute. Fallon (I've seen Falon) is an established name but not my style. I like the sound of Lucy or Lucille Lynn if you want the y in there.

     imageimage

  • I also knew a Fallon growing up. I asked about her name, and it was a soap star/characters name her mom liked. I always thought it was pretty. I can say avoid the "y", since that is too trendy IMO, but I can't judge against a "yoonique" name, since I am a participant in that.
