And everyone else...the pads of my feet (the flat spot behind and under my toes) are killing me! I need new socks if I'm gonna be putting in miles. What do you suggest?
How old are your shoes? Your socks really aren't that big of a deal. Shoes need to be replaced every 600 miles. Also, if you are going to start running a lot you should go to a running store and get fitted for a shoe that is a proper fit for your feet.
Thanks I need something to focus on! My shoes don't hurt me when I don't wear socks (they just smell), so I think they are ok. But I've already convinced H that I can get properly fitted for my 10lb loss reward
That's good, just don't injure yourself! I am currently still in my wool socks for outdoor runs, but I know you are in warming weather but I like my underarmour socks for long runs and my asics socks for sprints.
I have a number of different brands that are all rather stay-dry kind of material and not really padded at all where you're having foot pain. So I don't think i can be much help! I'm in the same school of thought of @tttwalters that it's all in the shoes!
Does this mean you're joining our Tuesday check-in again? ? ;-)
I agree with @tttwalters about the shoes. I just can't wear any socks that will bunch up or move. I rubbed a toe raw that way once. They need to FIT. But, the shoes are the most important. You think the shoes are ok, but how long have you had them? Do you also wear them just out and about and not just for exercise? You'd be surprised at the wear they may have. Also, do you know that you need to go at least a half, if not a full size bigger than your normal size in running shoes too right? I have pretty bad tendonitis in my left knee that calls for occasional cortisone shots (boo), so I'm a "the shoes are BIG" chick.
Dang @tiffletons518 I didn't know that! Ok @tttwalters I will go on my lunch tomorrow to check running shoes out at the local running store!! Thank you guys for fully engaging me tonight. I really needed it
Chiming in--- I agree with everyone about the shoes. I wear the Adidas socks from Costco (I'm classy). They have slightly more padding on the pad of your foot, but more importantly, they are really snug so they don't move when I run. Congrats on getting on the running train!
I always get a laugh when people at the gym will tell me they like (the look) of my shoes. I always think I barely notice the colours anymore, its the same brand and the same make, every 4 months and I just have to suck it up and take the colour they have decided to make it in this season. Anyway, just thought I would share that, have fun getting fitted and share some pics!
@tttwalters Yes! I hated the colors the last time. They were boring and the shoes were white. Wtf? I do most of my running outside. White shoes? Uh, no. kthanksbye. So, I ventured to a different "model" same brand, and I liked them a lot. I just bought a new pair a couple weeks ago.
@tiffletons518 White runners? Crazy! They would get lost in the snow. All of the shoes right now are super bright crazy colours. My current shoes are a teal green and pink, and I unintensionaly just bought a pink top, and my running lulu pants have a teal stripe on them. So I look all matchy matchy. Drives me nuts
@tttwalters Right! Mine are bright yellow/green and teal. Really, I didn't think it through. They aren't any better than the white. The first time I wore them out I was dodging puddles from all the snow melting and they're already muddy. I was mad. Lol.
@tiffletons518 shoes sadly don't stay pretty long. So hard to spend so much money to ruin them really. I laugh though when I see people at the starting line of half marathons/marathons with brand new shoes! Either they only treadmil run, or thought a new pair of shoes was a good idea, either way they are in for a bad run.
@tttwalters Seriously! treadmill running is so not the same as running outdoors. I miss running outside so much. We are supposed to hit 50 again this week. You can bet I'll be out there. I am not as hardcore as you. Plus I'd probably fall and break my face on ice if I tried to be. Ha
@tiffletons518 I wear tracks on my shoes. Try winter running next year, you may surprise yourself at how easy it is. (A quote stollen from somewhere "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear") 50 sounds so wonderful! Perfect for a long run! We were -21c today, blah! Sorry @wasnotwas for hijacking your thread. Tiffles and I love talking about running too much.
ok @tiffletons518 & @tttwalters I have more questions for you (now that I know you like talking about running )
1 - I'm doing the couch to 5k app and it only has activity for 3 days a week. I don't want to over do it, but I also want to see some results. What should I do on my "off" days? Or should/can I expedite the program and do more than 3 days/week?
2 - Do you have any recommended playlists on Pandora? I've been going with Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus radio, but I feel like I need something more rock-y.
Any other beginner running tips are very much appreciated I made the mistake of stepping on the scale this morning, and even though I put in 11 miles since Friday, the scale did not move, but I'm trying to be all mind over body and not care!
Some form of cross training on off days should be fine. Biking, elliptical, that sort of thing. But, I agree with @mcbush do take days off.
My Pandora annoys me sometimes for the commercials, but I have one station it's called Alternative Endurance Training radio. You'd probably like that. They've played older better Muse, MGMT, Jimmy Eat World. I dig it.
Also, avoid the scale. Lol. I do weigh myself, but I am huge on measuring. You may not see the scale budge, but you check and you've lost 3 inches. So, you would end up feeling defeated when there is change happening. Oh and core work. The stronger my core is, the better my running is.

This just happened to me the other day. I'm a saucony loyalist and my latest color combo is teal and yellow. I realized I was wearing a teal and yellow running top and black pants with a yellow stripe. I actually looked more coordinated for running than I do for work now.

Also did you know running outside in the cold burns more calories? My fat arse loves a polar run for this reason: more snacking allowed later. I also ran cross country in buffalo so you better believe half of our meets in November where in the snow.
@was when I trained for my last marathon I only ran 3 days a week. On the other days I did the elliptical or swam and did weight training. It kept me injury free and gave me a 4 hour marathon so I always stick with running every other day if I can. I think weight training is really important to keep your muscles strong, especially your leg muscles to keep your joints protected.
Thanks guys! MH just signed me up at the Y so I can do stuff at lunch (light weights or swimming). Thank you all so much, I could have very easily gone in a rut, but have avoided it today!!
You can walk or bike on the "off days". You do need to give your body time to rest though. You are building new muscles you aren't aware you even have yet.
I recommend not running with pandora unless you have unlimited data. You will burn through it fast. Otherwise if you do stream music I like pit bill radio for the crazy fun beats. And there's a website called rockmyrun.com that has mashups of songs in genres that you can set your run tempo to which is fun.
I'll have to check out rockmyrun! I finally started getting back into running but need some better music to keep me going for the whole 5k. I felt so fat and giggly last night...that needs to change. Kodos to the mommas who starting running again right away!
Yes @calikat80 is right with the weight training too!! I'm sure any one of us would be happy to offer an ear or a kick in the butt when you need it Once it becomes a habit, it gets easier.
Forgot to chime in, but I get some nice fitted socks for DH for work, and I like them as well so I buy men's ones. I have to go home or to Target to figure out the brand and such. But kudos to all those that mentioned shoes. I have a running pair and walking pair.
@wasnotwas - nope, you're screwed if you get your iphone wet and it crashes. it won't be replaced without you paying for a new one.
there's a sensor pad inside (made by 3M) that turns color when your phone is exposed to moisture.
so definitely get an arm band if you don't have one (ie it gets sweaty from you holding in your hand). it can also happen in warm climates (with the humidity) when it's used extensively outside.

This and having two very slimy boys was why I got insurance on my phone. Mine started crashing and they just replaced it for free. I carry mine in my hand while running to avoid sweatiness and that works for me.
I have no idea what pandora is, but I just added Timber to my play list and am loving it! I also have a ton of poppy, upbeat and sing along type music. If you like it, add it too your list. Running can get boring. Sorry to burst your bubble, but running is a difficult way to burn fat. If you add things like weights then you will defiantly tone and trim down, however running alone is tough. You need to eat proper "running" foods and refuel properly. What you eat after your run, will affect your next run. If I am only doing a 5k, then I have either a glass of chocolate milk after, or a chia fresca (which is chia seeds, water and lemon juice). Running makes you hungry so just be careful.
I run 6 days a week, and take an off day. I am not big on cross training, I will sometimes do spin class but it makes me crazy. It is good to cross train, so if you can do it. Yoga is great, so even if you can do a few things in your living room it will help a ton. Make sure you are doing speed work one day a week and hills one day a week. (these are great and effective ways to improve your endurance) If you want more info on that then let me know. Speed work is my favorite day though!
@tttwalters I may lean on you in a week or two. Honestly, I've gone down this road of starting a workout/healthy eating routine so many times, I need to prove to myself that I am taking it seriously. I am just taking things day by day and if, in a week or two, I am still at it I will take it more seriously

Just pay $260 to enter a marathon. Wasting that much money has definitely been my motivator! Haha.
@calikat80, what marathon is $260? The most I have paid is $120.
NYC. I saw it and I was like, "WTF are you serious!?" I have been entering the lottery for the last 4 years to get auto entry this year so I kinda had to follow through, but I am considering selling my bib because my hip is already bothering me.
I have a Galaxy in an otterbox and I shove it down my sports bra when I run. Ha. Having good music does help. And, honestly my music choices can greatly vary depending on my mood. One day I listened to Brand New (the band) Pandora station and it was all angry music. Exactly what I needed that day and I shaved 3 minutes off my 5k. But, I can't listen to that all of the time. I honestly don't really get bored running, but I also don't run 26

A good pair of shoes will make a big difference!! I'm a total cheapo, but I will dish out cash on my running shoes. It's my favorite splurge
