GTKY: jobs/careers

So, I pretty much stole this from TTCAL. Something very similar was posted a few weeks ago, but I've always been curious about it and I thought the one they had posted was really good.

What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?)

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?

Before I became a stay at home Mom I was the Lead Law Clerk to a Real Estate Lawyer. I basically closed deals (purchases, sales and refinances) and supervised the Junior Legal Assistant. I loved the job but we decided to save the daycare costs and I would stay at home until the kids are in school and then I'll head back to work.

I would rate it an 8. I loved the work but it could be uber stressful and my boss had a habit of taking on extra files which was awful if it was already super busy.
  • I am currently an infant teacher. I work with one other person to care for six infants. I'd rate it at a 7. I have always had a great passion for working with infants, but it can be extremely stressful. Sometimes at work I wonder why I still want kids of my own (lol), but at the end of the day I usually leave work with a full heart. I absolutely love seeing those babies laugh and smile and meet new milestones everyday. Nothing fulfills me more. I have always dreamed of being a teacher. I also think it would be cool to be a L&D or NICU nurse (although it's not something I really think that I'm suited for). I would also love to be a SAHM someday.

  • I'm a Registered nurse in a rehab facility. I take care of 14 patients who are there for inpatient physical/occupational therapy. I pass medications, change dressings on wounds, do lots of excessive paperwork, etc.

I'd probably rate it about a 7 or 8. I absolutely love being a nurse, but can be super stressful (more often than not). Some days it takes a lot of emotional motivation for me to get myself through the door, because it is a lot to handle, both physically and emotionally. But most of the time, I love what I do. I can't imagine doing anything else. The thought of being stuck behind a desk bores me.

Eventually, I think I'd love to be per diem and be a SAHM (per diem means that I only work "as needed". I can pick up as few or as many hours as I want... I'm not contracted into working 32-40hrs per week). So I could work 1 day a week if I wanted. I don't think I could ever give up my career completely, which is why I'd love to be per diem.

  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) I'm a ballet teacher- currently 5 and 6 year old girls and boys. And my title is exactly what it is, and that's what I do! I'm thinking of doing an extra class a week in the summer and taking on some adults again, but I will keep my little ones too.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain) I'm going with 9, because I absolutely LOVE what I do.  But no job is perfect. It can be challenging to work with small kids sometimes.  And parents can be even more challenging every so often. But it's my dream job, and doesn't feel like a job.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?  The one I have, I worked to have it and I've always wanted it. Wouldn't change it!  But if I had to pick something else- it would be music related.  Maybe a piano teacher.  Something in the arts.

  • I am the Clinical Liaison/Informatics Nurse and also Med/Surg Charge Nurse.

Clinical Liaison /Informatics Nurse means I ensure everyone who uses our Electronic  Health Record (physicians, nurses, ancillary staaf) are trained in how to use the system and kept up to date on changes coming our way. I track measures set by CMS for Meaningful Use.

As the Charge Nurse I assist the floor nurses in caring for patients and serve as a resource, make rounds with doctors, help in the ER when it gets busy.

Edit: I'd  give my job a 7. if I could get rid of the informatics part it would be a 10. I have the best coworkers, will never find a better group of docs, and I love the variety  I get as a charge.

  • I like seeing what everybody does. I know it gets posted a lot but I can never remember.

What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?)
I am a dental assistant. I sit beside a dentist all day and pass him instruments he needs, I use a suction to suck up spit and debris and use an air/water syringe to rinse teeth/mouths. I assist with all sorts of procedures like root canals, extractions, making dentures.. This particular dentist I work for likes to do everything himself but in my previous job I worked at an orthodontist office and would take impressions of kids mouths, take x-rays and help the hygienists place brackets.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)
I'd say about a 6. I like my hours (Mon-Thurs) with approx 8-10 weeks holiday a year. I disagree with a lot that my boss says, and that makes it hard somedays because we sit so close to each other for long hours. He does not like us to have a social life with other and would rather us to not speak to each other in the office so that is also hard because there are only 5 of us there.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?

  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) I'm a dental hygienist in a pediatric dental office.  Pretty self explanatory.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain) I'd say an 8.  I love what I do, and I especially love working with kids.  My boss is very generous with her staff but is a bit of a perfectionist which can be stressful.  The days are very busy and can be pretty long.  I also have a pretty hefty commute, it would be nice if I were closer to home, but we have Friday's off, so the 3 day weekends are pretty kick ass.

  • I'm a housewife and freelance writer. It means I clean, cook, garden, wrangle animals, decorate, write stuff, and drink copious amounts of tea.

I love it. I get to choose what writing jobs I take, have the freedom to work on my book, and I take a lot of joy in taking care of our home. Plus I love cooking and baking, and for the first time I have the time to really explore that. It'll be a great situation when we have a baby as well.

The only way this could be better was if I had an agent and a contract, so I could drop the freelance stuff and focus solely on my fiction. And also if I had a baby. One, because I obviously really want a baby, and two, because I get a lot of negative responses from people who think it's lame that I'm a housewife without kids, and that gets old. (But it's better than telling them I'm a writer, because then I either get unsolicited advice about how to get published (99% of the time they tell me to self publish. Gee, thanks, I'd never thought of that!), they want me to write their idea (no offense, but I really don't want to write your gothic western sci-if based on your grandfather's war stories), or I get antidotes about how they/their random friend or relation is also a writer, squee! Shoot me now. Anyway. Rant over. :)

I am a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit...I'm sure most people know this, but it is where we care for premature and medically fragile newborns/infants.

I love my job...10. I have some horrible days. I see some really sad things. As our chaplain put it, things that we see every day are things that people see on the worst day of their life. However...it is the most rewarding career I can ever imagine having. I love what I do. I love knowing that I am helping to save lives every day, and to nurture babies and give them what they need when their parents are unable to. I can't imagine being a NICU parent and feeling so helpless, but part of what I love about my job is being able to work with parents to make sure that I am doing everything I can for their little one in the way that they would, if they could. Can you tell I love my job?

I would not change jobs. I would not want to do anything else.
Your job fascinates the shit out of me. I wish that I was well suited for that type of job because I totally would do it. I'm not even really sure exactly why I am not well suited for it, but I have never been good at science, so there is that. I also feel like I would be really nervous to hurt somebody, let alone any itty bitty baby...but maybe you get over that part?

  • What I do: Right now I'm working on my PhD in educational psychology with a specialization in school psychology. I'm fulfilling my internship right now and will have my license this summer. My official title will be a licensed specialist in school psychology (LSSP). In any of the other 49 states, I would be called a school psychologist, but that's not how we roll in Texas.

So anyway, I test students (currently K-8th grade) for special needs such as autism and emotional disturbance. I provide counseling to students in special education, develop IEPs, consult on behavior problems and basically play and talk with kids all day.

On a scale of 1-10, I'd given it an 8. I have the coolest job and the best schedule. I can bring reports home if I need to, pick up my daughter after school, and meet some amazing kiddos. They are the diamonds in the rough in my opinion. They may have disadvantages, but they certainly compensate for them. The summers off aren't bad either!

If I could have any job, I would be an obstetrician or L&D nurse. If I had the skills and money, I would flip houses or be a pilot!

  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) I'm a speech language pathologist at a special needs preschool for 2 to 5 year olds.  I provide speech therapy and feeding therapy for kiddos with a variety of developmental delays and disorders.  I also do home care for early intervention (birth to 3) on the side.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain) 6.  Burnout is a challenge.  I work for a non-profit, so the pay doesn't seem to match up the work we do.  Working for 9 half-hour sessions is exhausting, but when you see progress made by the children, it is rewarding.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why? I would love to be a writer or if I had more time/ambition, go back to school for functional medicine, with a holistic concentration.

After the baby is born we continue with the previous mentioned counseling and resources but also work on parenting skills.

I love my job! 10 out of 10, I feel like I am making a difference with many of my mamas and love what I do. My dream profession would be something like this but without the barriers like funding, qualifications, etc.

I work in the mall office of a shopping mall. My official title is Customer Service Supervisor but that's a load of bs because that's only about 25% of my job. The other 75% is basically doing MY boss' job of marketing for the mall. I like the marketing piece a lot though so I don't mind when my boss dumps all her projects on me. Basically I plan and set up all the events for the mall. For example, we just had an Easter Egg hunt over the weekend that I planned. Next we'll be doing a prom fashion show. Other than events, it's also planning the advertising throughout the mall and how to bring in future tenants/stores. I like it a lot more now than I did in the beginning because my boss has become a lot more manageable.

My dream job would be to work backstage for either a concert or Broadway show. I ADORE the performing arts and would love to be a part of it.
  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?): I'm a Research Specialist in a Histology Research lab at a teaching hospital. I'm a histotechnologist and I'm the supervisor of the lab. We do the histology side of research projects for investigators at the university. I work under comparative pathologists who perform research in animal models (mainly CF research).

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain): 8; some days I wish I was just a regular tech without the responsibilities of a manager. Mostly it's great and really interesting--we are a part of many different research projects that go for grants and publications so it's never one sole focus of research.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why? I would love to work in a bakery. I love to bake and I wish I had more time to devote to it. And the customers would mostly be happy and nice--who isn't in a good mood when they grab a cookie or a cupcake?

I use to be a comptroller for a government entity. Which meant balanced budgets for all levels of the govt, managed the ap and payroll clerks, approved all purchase orders and work orders. Reconciled all tax revenues that came in and prepared monthly statements of actual expenses against budgeted expenses. Tried to figure out ways to stretch the tax dollars to cover all the mandated expenses.

No I'm a SAHM, so I'm a maid, chef, landscaper, accountant and I run a taxi service. In my free time I take on the roll of a contractor.

    ETA: I posted to soon.

I would rate my job now a 10 when I worked outside the home a 6. I enjoy being able to be there for my son. I do miss working outside the home for adult company but I always hated missing my boys school and after school activities because of work. So I volunteer at my sons school book store to fulfill the adult company need and it allows me to be more involved in what's going on at school. My son also enjoys me being at his school during the day.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I'm a chemical dependency counselor in a dual diagnosis facility, meaning that I provide counseling for people who have both a substance use disorder and another mental illness. A large portion of my patients have opioid addictions (heroin, prescription pain killers) because we are known to specialize in that, but I also work with a lot of people who have an abuse/dependent condition with alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, etc. In terms of the other mental illness, there's a wide range- from depression and anxiety, to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc. Most of my days are filled with hour-long individual counseling sessions (I do see families occasionally as well), but I also fun an Anger Management group once a week.

On a scale of 1-10, I would say an 8. It gets really stressful some days, but for the most part I absolutely love what I do!

My dream job would be to open my own counseling practice, and I'm hoping that dream will become a reality some day!! I don't know if I will always specialize in addictions though, Id like to eventually branch out into other teen issues like bullying and eating disorders.

  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?)

I'm a Physician Assistant of orthopaedic surgery at a hospital in the city. I work for the hospital, so I work with several surgeons. I have a variety of tasks, but mainly I scrub and first assist in 3-4 operations a day (mostly total hip/knee, lower and upper extremity fractures, I&Ds, etc) and I then am the person who oversees the care for those patients with my cooperating physician. I see consults, perform simple procedures (joint aspirations, reductions and splint/cast applications), put in orders, discharge patients, etc.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)

    8. usually I love my job. It offers enough autonomy that I feel that I am using the skills and knowledge I obtained while getting my degrees. Other times, I feel like I do a lot of grunt work without the acknowledgement from the physicians (one in particular can be a real piece of work). Also, I sometimes wish I had just gone to med school instead of deferring. (And then I realize that I wouldn't Have been able to start a family at this point and I'm glad I did.)

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?

I like what I do, but I think I'll eventually change specialties if we have more children. My hours are nice 6-4, but I would like to work 3 days a week instead of 5 eventually.

@dlpanda08 Thank you. I am so excited about about this new chapter in my life. I love that you teach and have the opportunity to move around within the different grades, but I could see that being with one grade would be better.

@musicfanatic I always wanted to dance as a little girl but I never got the opportunity to live out that dream. My oldest son used to take tap/ballet when he was little because he was a little clumsy and it really helped with his coordination and his posture.

@schoolpsychsteph My major was school counseling before I changed it to education. I applaud you because we work with a lot of school psychologist and they have it hard down here, especially with the crazy school merger that is going on in my county.

    @peanutrn NICU nurses ROCK!

  • My current job title is mom/housewife.  I love it.  I never really had a career before becoming a SAHM so this is definitely the most rewarding work I have ever done.  I would rate it a 9 on the best days (90% of the time) and maybe a 5-6 on the worst days.  The worst days include zero sleep, a crabby toddler, and housework for daaaaaays that isn't going to get done, oh, and no pay.  Most days though, it is seriously the best thing ever.

If I could have any job in the whole world it would be something where I was my own boss and could make my own hours.  I hate the 9-5 grind, coming and going with everyone else and answering to a boss I have no respect for.  As far as what I would do for my own business?  I would either own a doggy day-care/kennel or a small health food store.

  • @holly628‌ I'm an SLP, too! :)

What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist: I find, screen, evaluate, refer to other disciplines, treat and manage my caseload of kids from kindergarten to twelfth grade. I work with a variety of kids, who have articulation (sound) disorders to language disorders, stuttering/fluency difficulties, programming AAC (augmentation alternative communication) devices- anything and everything dealing with communication.

I also work PRN (as needed) for two local nursing homes. I provide feeding/swallowing evaluations & treatment, also cognitive and speech evaluations & therapy on weeknights or weekends when needed and I am able.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)
I would say 7-8 at my full time. I'm the only one at my school so I get pretty lonely. I have to figure out a lot of things on my own when I'm involved in a unique situation, which is fine but I'm usually limited on time. I have back to back sessions all day long. Also the workload can be a bit crazy since it's just me. But I do have summers off. That's a huge perk.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?
Honestly I would love to work with neonatal feeding and swallowing, I always have. I have no idea how I would even get there at this point.

  • I'm an treatment counselor at a women's recovery center. I work with pregnant and parenting moms recovering from drug addiction. It's extremely hard and rewarding.

I also teach parenting classes, the women I work with are CPS involved and many have lost their kids to the system and are fighting to get them back.

The best parts are the success stories, it's humbling and awe inspiring to watch someone turn their life around. also the babies!!! I'm always chillin with a baby on my lap, I just love it.

The pay is ass and it has me thinking about switching fields which makes me sad.

Very interesting...I am 7 hours away from my double bachelors degree in Psychology/Sociology....I think I have senioritis because Im at the end and sooo tired of school..lol...not sure if I'll persue my Masters degree...my questions are 1) what qualifications were needed for your job 2) how is the pay?
  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?)

I am a Police Officer. I conduct traffic stops, respond to calls of service, write reports/file charges, make arrest and testify in court. I work in a large tourist city, so I deal with drunks, prostitutes,  burglars, and the little ol lady that walks her dogs and poops in her neighbors yard without picking it up...and everything in between..lol..it can be really fun especially the foot and car chases (the TV show COPS in a pretty good depiction of the crazy calls we recieve).

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)

I enjoy by job and would give it an 8-9 on really exciting days and a 5-6 on stressful days. I can see some really horrific scenes.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?

My passion is the study of the mind and peoples behaviors. My dream job is a Criminal Profiler, but there is such a small demand and a large pool of candidates, I dont think its an avenue for me to persue. So with my degrees in Psychology and Sociology, I will probably go into some type of counseling. On my job, I put temporary band-aids on situations. I want to provide more of a long-term solution in the assistance that I give to people!

What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) My job title is Associate Regional Director for Advocacy & Supervision.  I work for the home office of a Broker/Dealer and my group has the dual mandate to serve as advocates for our Registered Representatives as well as their supervisors from a regulatory/compliance perspective (yes, there is an inherent conflict of interest there).  I do trade review, email review, lots of continuing education, answer questions from reps in the field, help with annual supervisory visits, and looking at prospective reps credit histories, production and background to see if they would be a good fit to join the firm.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain) It's probably a 8-9.  I work from home, which has been awesome for me.  However, working from home means that I miss out on a lot of opportunities that those in the home office have, so I worry that down the road it will be hard for me to advance.  Trying to decide if I care, because I love working from home SO MUCH.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why? Hmmm...probably a writer of some sort.

  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) I am also a Post-Doctoral Fellow like @joy2611

My work is focused on investigating how cells of the blood vessel respond to an injury that alters the mechanical environment the cells experience within the context of a particular protein pathway related to the actin cytoskeleton. its a little complicated so I usually say I am a scientist or that I run a mouse bordello since I time-breed a lot of mice and have to keep track of when they were impregnated and the exact dates of the embryos to isolate them/tissue at a particular date.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain) This is a difficult question. I love research and the people I work with.  But, it was really a sideways step for me and I took it because I couldn't get an industry or gov. contract job (i.e. CDC) like I wanted when I was looking this time last year.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why? I would like to stay in research but not a traditional tenure-track academic position. If I change careers altogether I would be an Orchid gardener (I would make that a thing) I love gardening in general and I have ~ a dozen orchids now and would get more if I had the room.
  • I'm a substitute teacher. Wasn't my goal in life, but in this state, it's what you do to get your foot in the door. Problem is, once I was at that point where I had experience and things were looking good, I had DD and fell i love with the flexibility of the job. I'd probably rate it at an 8.5 because I love being a PT SAHM and teacher. If the opportunity comes up for a full time position, I will most likely take it (as it IS my dream job ), but it's tough to get in here. Most of my teacher friends all had to move to the southern states to find jobs. It's tough here.

  • Registered dental hygienist (RDH). I work in two private practices for general dentists working with patients on their oral health and performing many duties under the realm of cleaning teeth, treating gum issues, etc.

I LOVE my job! Perfect job for eventually a family. Never a weekend and a four day work week. On a scale I would say a 9.

Dream job would be to have a large barn and be an equine trainer (horse trainer). Horses are my passion. Would love to wake up everyday to that!
  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?)
I am a Clinical Research Coordinator.  I work on a few different projects at a children's hospital and carry them through all the stages (getting approval, recruiting participants, working with data, helping to analyze and interpret the results).  It's a lot of project management.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)
I'm at maybe a 7.  I don't always love the day-to-day of what I'm doing and it's not directly related to my interests, but I love the people I work with and I have tons of flexibility.  (I decided to work from home today so I'm on the couch with my cat.)

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?
I'd like to be a SAHM, but that's not in the cards for us for a few years.  I'm likely going to be getting a new job within the hospital I work at in Quality Improvement this summer, and I'm really excited about the possibility.  I'm not sure it'll be my dream job, but I'm ready for a change.
  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?)
I teach third graders in a public school, which means I basically give standardized tests all year long.  LOL Just kidding... sort of.  We take 3 standardized tests in 3rd grade.  My children are 8 and 9 years old.  I teach them everything (math, reading, grammar, writing, social studies, science).  The children are wonderful.  They can work independently and do projects.  It's a great age, IMO.

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)
I give my job an 8.  I love teaching and learning from my children.  They are fun and most of them work hard.  The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because of the tests.  The higher ups who require these tests forget that these children are 8.  They see them as numbers on a spreadsheet.  We are so rushed to get through the curriculum that sometimes it is difficult for them to be kids.

The only other downer can be the parents.  Some do not realize that we teach because we love it and love their children.  My job is to teach them and there are consequences for not getting your work completed or not being kind to others.  There are always parents that feel like we are "picking on their child" even though they have heard the same things since kindergarten (ie your child talks when it is not appropriate or is not able to complete their work in a timely manner).

Overall, my job is amazing. :)

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?
I'm one of those crazy people who has always wanted to teach elementary school.  When I was little, I would sit my brother down and play school (complete with a roster to take attendance).  The only thing that might make it better is if I lived near a beach so I could teach and then grade papers by the ocean. That would make spring break and summer even more awesome! ;)

What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) I am also a Post-Doctoral Fellow like @joy2611

Oh, post docing.  It's a world, isn't it?  I'm actually on my second post doc now and wondering what the fluck I'm doing.  My husband is getting raises and promotions and I'm like "I ran a Western today."  Hrmph.

Are you down in Georgia?  (You mentioned the CDC..)
Yes. My second post-doc as well - I tried to get just about any other job after my first, but since we wanted to stay in Atlanta for H's job, and no one would hire me, second post-doc it is.

I am continually side-tracked by waiting for stupid mice. - Last post-doc I isolated embryonic lungs and studied how the branched structures formed so was at the mercy of getting my females pregnant and the size of the litters.

I moved now to adult mouse surgery stupidly thinking it would be faster... now I breed my knock-outs, get 2 litters of ~20 pup, and like 3 will be KOs and only 1 male (which I need) so back to waiting another 3 months for the next generation to mature   >:P

I'm a chemical dependency counselor in a dual diagnosis facility, meaning that I provide counseling for people who have both a substance use disorder and another mental illness.

    ---end quote---

@‌ joneka right now all that I have is a bachelor's degree in psychology, but I am 12 credits away from a Master's Degree in Counseling. The pay is pretty low for full time (low 30's) but will go up a bit when I get my degree. I will need to keep working at a facility where I am supervised for 3,000 post Masters hours in order to be a New York State licensed mental health counselor. Different states have different req's, but you always get a provisional license first and then have to work for so many hours to get the full licensure.

It's a really great field despite the low pay, and when I open my own practice I hope to make closer to 60K. Best of luck if you decide to take this path, you can always PM me for more info too! :)

  • What is your job title and what does it mean (what the heck do you actually do all day at work?) HR/Office Administrator - I handle all the ins and outs of hiring/firing people, benefits administration and overall handling all office duties (supply ordering, etc).

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job? (Explain)  8 - It's much better than my previous job and I love the fact I can work from home if needed. :)

If you could have any job in the world what would it be and why?  A SAHM/SAHW - I would love to be able to be there all the time to take care of my pups and 12 year old son...plus a house doesn't clean itself.

  • I was a hairstylist before I became a SAHM. I still occasionally do it on the side. I did a little bit of everything when it came to hair, but I was mainly a master color specialist.

I'd rate my previous job as a 10. I was a booth rent stylist, so I was pretty much my own boss. I made my own schedule, which was freaking awesome as a parent. I loved all of my clients, and I never tired of doing hair.

If I could have any job in the world, I'd still be either a hairstylist or a SAHM :)
