3rd Trimester

Gestational diabetes and preclampsia

Hi ladies! I have just made it to the third trimester! I wasn't as active previously as I would have liked to be because of some personal business I have been dealing with, but it has resolved itself finally after a very difficult winter and I look forward to being able to participate more.

Anyway, today was my 28 week appt and I failed the glucose test. Also, my blood pressure was in the preeclampsia range. The doctor is wanting to alter diet some and test at home to see if we can regulate it without medicine. The baby has been measuring two weeks ahead the pas few appts and he thinks this is why. I'm pretty bummed because I've been trying really hard to not be one of the types to eat for two or just let loose, and I've still gained 34 lbs or so already. Just feeling down on myself lately.

We went to our 4D ultrasound afterwards and of course, baby boy did not cooperate at all! Just wasn't my day I guess.

Well that's my rant for the evening.

  • Thanks! I appreciate it. I really want to try to breastfeed and he doctor mentioned that we had to get it regulated because he won't be able to regulate his own blood sugar right away. If they get sugar bottles or drips to regulate it, it can make breastfeeding difficult. I guess we will see what all the next few weeks hold!

  • There is no reason he needs a sugar drip or iv to regulate his sugar except in extreme circumstances. Colostrum is very good at helping babies control their blood sugar, and so is skin to skin with mom. Make sure you keep the baby with you as much as possible after it's born, lots of skin to skin and lots and lots of nursing. You can also hand express colostrum and feed with a spoon or dropper if baby is having trouble latching.

  • I feel ya on the food front. I've tried hard to eat healthy (way healthier than I worried about before) and have still gained 31 (doc wanted no more than 30) with 6 weeks left to go (when baby puts on the most weight). I actually passed 1hour glucose but now I'm measuring big with extra fluid and doc has me cutting back like a diabetic would. Oh the joys of being pregnant! Hope it gets better for you!

I also have GD and my doctor said there could be a chance that he won't be able to control his sugar because of the GD.  She said that even if they have to do a bottle or sugar water, I can still breastfeed and encourage him to latch and get colostrum.  Just because he may need something to regulate himself doesn't mean you should give up on breastfeeding or anticipate it's going to be difficult.  Breastfeeding can be difficult even without your LO having other things to deal with.

  • And just to chime in on the BP - high BP is certainly not something you want to have, but it doesn't mean you will get pre-e! It's something you should keep an eye on but BP alone does not pre-e make. GL to you with the GD and HBP.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Thanks everyone! I've had a very rough year with lots of personal issues and problems so I was kind of down on myself to start with Friday. We shall see what happens over the next few days. So far, glucose has been high for the past 8 checks..looks like medication to regulate it. Just fingers crossed it works!

  • Like someone else mentioned you can have high blood pressure and not have preeclampsia. I had GD in my first pregnancy and controlled it through diet and metformin. It was just a pain to have to check my blood sugar so many times a day. But my first son was born 7#8 and didn't have any problems with his sugar. My second pregnancy though I was a train wreck. Had a harder time controlling GD but was able to keep my numbers in limits with about 2000mg metformin a day and watching what I ate. But my main problem was the blood pressure (but i also have chronic hypertension). I never developed preeclampsia but they had a difficult time controlling my blood pressure. I was on 300mg labetalol 3 times a day just to get my blood pressure stabilized at around 140s/100. Unfortunately the blood pressure (along with low fluid level)affected my baby and I was induced at 36 weeks for IUGR and he was tiny just 4#7. He was on an IV drip because a number of reasons that snowballed. He was a preemie and wanted to sleep all the time, didn't want to eat, couldn't hold his temp up and couldn't keep his sugar up. He spent about 2 weeks in nicu and about 5 days of it he had an IV in. The rest of the time was spent on bili lights, feeding tube and learning to feed and grow.

If your blood sugar is out of range it is something you should show your dr so you can get it under control. And if you worry about your blood pressure then get a monitor and check it daily about the same time of day to see how it's going. Keep a log and show your dr. Good thing about have a few issues I have noticed is they usually want to see you more so they can monitor how things are going!

  • Thanks! I have gotten the home monitor and what not for the sugar and have been checking it. I pretty much have been following the diet guidelines all along, so not much changes there. I of course can cut out the occasional milkshake and stuff that I have had while pregnant (occasional meaning like every two weeks when the weather is decently pretty!) though I don't know how much it would make a difference given it's so scattered and rare.

As far as the BP, I work in a school and have had the nurse check it a few times here and there when I have felt like it was high and sure enough it was. Having her check it routinely is a great idea, thanks for the tip! I'll keep a log of that along with the sugar log. He seems concerned about it because pre baby, I have always had low BP (lower than normal). And every time I have gone, it has crept up to where it is solidly in the area that he is saying it's high consistently. He didn't say I have preeclampsia, he just noted that we need to get the GD under control if possible since the two can be linked. With the BP already being high, he wanted to see if the sugar control could help.

Thanks for all of the tips guys!
