How will I know if DH can stay at the hospital or not? Is this normal, that they stay?

Also, what are these hospital gowns you can buy?

Check the hospital's website and if there isn't one, give a call.  Or take the much maligned hospital tour! (I'm taking the tour.)  But my hospital, for instance, has all the visitation rules, etc. on their website.  It states that dad can stay with mom and baby ONLY IF they have room.  If you have to have another mom in your room, the fathers are not allowed to stay the night.  I'm so nervous that's going to happen, but everything else about the hospital is awesome. I understand, though... if you get stuck in a room with another woman, she might not feel safe or comfortable having some strange man in the room with her, even if he's just sleeping in a chair.

Thanks! Sometimes I ask questions and when people answer, it's like... Duuuuh, Celeste. I checked the website. There are visiting hours but dads can "visit" 24/7, so I guess it's ok. Also, the baby stays in the room. I didn't know that.

We are doing the childbirth class at the hospital and part if it's the tour... Just not until the end of April. So far away!

We found out at our hospital tour.. But all of the rooms at our hospital are private rooms.. I didn't ask why they had that rule at mine, but the rooms are on the smaller side so maybe thats why. Idk.

  • I haven't started but hope to be done by 36 weeks.

  • I have to pack it for when we go on vacation. I will be 30 weeks at that time.
  • @whoberry‌ - The Birth Partner is a book for fathers/partners to read before labor. It's super informative and explains all the stages of labor, coping mechanisms, positions, pain meds with pros and cons, etc. I just finished re-reading it (read it the first time for DD) and it's awesome! It will be a good reference to have at the hospital.
  • I'll be 28 weeks tomorrow and have started my bag already. I made a list and have it on top in case I go before I finish it then DH will know what else I want or need. But we don't live too far from where I'm planning on delivering (30 minutes) but if I go before 32 weeks then the hospital is about an hour away (I live in the middle of nowhere... Lol)
  • I live across the street from our hospital so probably not til last minute lol
  • Not letting the baby's father stay over night seems weird and kind of archaic. And @Babywear has a good point about the baby also being a patient. Our hospital's rule is "one adult of the mother's choice" allowed overnight, visitors are allowed at any time. The rooms are private with a sleeper couch, but if someone is willing to sleep in a chair, why wouldn't you let him?

We do too! Like literally across the street. Do we just walk home with our baby? Bring the stroller?

I will pack my bag just so if someone else grabs it, it has the correct things.

  • FTM here. I really want to start working on gathering things for it now but I'm afraid DH will look at me like I'm crazy. My shower isn't even for another month so I'm really hoping DS holds out until after.

I haven't started packing it yet but I've been keeping a list of things I want to include so I don't forget.  Our hospital suggested a few things in our labor class that I wouldn't have thought of too: change for vending machines, snacks/food for DH, nursing pillow, pillow and washcloth from home.  They said you might want to bring your own birth ball since you will be more used to it's size.

Did anyone bring a shower cap? If I get in the shower or tub to labor I imagine I will be annoyed by having wet, dripping, cold hair afterwards, but not sure I will be with it enough to bother putting a shower cap on.

  • I can't believe some hospitals don't let the husband stay overnight. Wtf?!

Isn't it awesome to be so close? We will still drive bc the street is more like a freeway but I see it out of my window! :) I am planning to chill at home when I go into labour as long as possible :-)

I agree! I feel like it's so unfair to the father.

With family in and out of town my shower isn't until I'm 35weeks so I'm planning that as I'm putting away and organizing baby stuff from shower I'll be packing my hospital bag at the same time! The hospital is 45-50minutes away so hopefully I remember everything so SO doesn't have to run home to often.
  • @whoberry‌ I will pack a shower cap. I always do. I have long, thick hair and I do not find it comfortable having it wet. Our hospital does have hair dryers, but I really don't want to spend my energy on blow drying my hair! As far as actually using it, who knows? But it's so easy to pack, why not?

  • Last time around I packed my bag at 38 weeks 6 days...and went into labor two hours later. This time I'll probably start keeping a running packing list on my phone soonish, but not actually pack until at least 37 weeks.
  • No way would a hospital kick my husband out. He's the source of my sanity and the strongest anti-anxiety treatment I have. In ten years, I think I've spent less than five nights without him. I wouldn't change that immediately after having a newborn. Way to make it more stressful.

  • Chances are i'll be tossing things in a bag while heading out the door. If anything i'll sendsomeone to the store or back home. I have zero worries, lol.
  • I got a smallish duffel bag. I'm only at the hospital for 24 hours and don't plan on bringing that much
