1st Trimester

will my dr. write me a note?

I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant, I am working full time and going to school full time. It is hard but I can manage now. However, in this summer( May to Aug), my schedule is going to be very hectic. I have to work 36 hours a week, do my internship for at least 24 hours a week (200 hrs total), and going to class for 10 hours. So basically, I am looking at a 80 hour work week including homeworks.

I dont' want to drop down to part-time because I will lose my insurance and maternity leave. and dropping out of school is out of the question.

Just wondering whether my OB dr. will write me a note to have six weeks off, this way, I can finish my 200 hrs internship and be back to work and just need to worry about roughly 40 hrs/ week. and how to ask him about it.

thanks for any input.

  • I highly doubt it. I think you'll just have to figure out time management and to cut things where you can. It'll be the same when you have the baby and no one will be there to "write a note."
  • I doubt they'll do a note for just work and not internship. Plus, you'll just be cutting into your own time off with the baby, which I promise you'll want more!

I'd have to agree with PPs.  Overbooking your own schedule isn't a medical reason to get off of work.

It sounds like you're due in mid-October, so hopefully you will be finishing up with all of the extra commitments around the time you enter your third tri.  FWIW, I also have a very hectic schedule at the moment (full time student, plus working 2 part-time jobs that total 35 hours per week give or take) and it is manageable for me so far at 29 weeks.  Who knows how I'll feel in a few weeks, but for now it's alright!

  • I am also doubtful that your doctor will write you a note to excuse you from work.  Do you have any leave/vacation you can take during that time to free your schedule a bit?  Maybe you can use a day's vacation per week to free up your time?  Or take a few hours of vacation per day to shorten your work week?

I know how hard it is to manage everything, but just remember this is temporary and you will get through it.  I've worked/gone to school full time with a newborn and I know how hard it is.  It's worth the sacrifice, you just have to power through it.
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
