Babies: 9 - 12 Months

when did your LO stop eating solids?

My son is 9 months old and eats oatmeal with a jar of fruit for breakfast and 3 jars of baby food and puffs for lunch and dinner. I have tired some finger foods, but im curious when others stopped solids all together and only did finger foods. What about giving your LO water? My son has started to not show interest in his bottles anymore and we are lucky if we can get him to drink 3 six ounce bottles a day so im worried about him getting dehydrated. We always offer a bottle before solids, but it doesnt seem to matter. I definately think he is ready for food, but im a ftm so im not sure if Its too soon for finger foods 3 times a day.

  • Look into baby led weaning. A lot if people never feed their baby baby food and go straight to normal food. You can give him water with his meals.

  • Hello! I would try to offer both finger foods and a purée at each meal if you are looking to make the transition. I find that sometimes it is easier, faster and cleaner to spoon feed than to let my baby feed himself so I give him oatmeal with mashed fruit (frozen warmed up and mixed in) for breakfast every day when I am trying to get out the door to work just because it's fast. He then eats breakfast (self feeds pancakes, waffles, etc) at daycare and feeds himself at every other meal. I started offering finger foods at every meal (lunch/dinner/snacks) around that age and slowly transitioned to mostly finger foods around 10 months. If I think that he hasn't eaten enough I will still spoon feed him something that I know he will eat at the end. I started offering water at every meal and snack around that time and he still doesn't take much. Sometimes he sucks a lot up the straw but I can't tell if he actually swallows or just uses it to wet his mouth and then spits it all out. I have had better luck with small amounts of formula in a sippy cup. Good luck!
  • My 12month old was never spoon fed.  The first time I put a spoon in her mouth was at about 11.5months of age to help with some apple sauce.  She fully fed herself solids from the start.  She eats like a champ.

There is no right age.  If you baby is keen to eat finger foods then go for it.  Top them up after with purees if you feel they need more.

As for the formula...I personally would try to continue until closer to 12months to ensure they are getting all they need.  Try it at different times, in different settings etc. Water is fine just try to offer after a bottle rather than shortly before a bottle.  Watch the diaper output to monitor dehydration...remember food has 'water' too so they get more liquids than just the bottle.

  • I'm confused.  What do you mean by stopping solids?  Finger foods are solids whereas purees technically are not.  You do not want to stop solids you want to get your child to eat solids.

We did baby led weaning so the only time DS had baby food was when he tried some a friend of his was eating.
  • I thought I was pretty clear, but i was talking about purees.
  • I thought of people food more as finger foods and purees as solids. Im not trying to be snarky either. I have just heard purees refered to as solids so thats what i posted.
  • At 9 months you can definately drop the purées. We started with things like avocado & bananas then toast with peanut butter, kiwi, strawberries, steamed veggies, Cheerios.. Started around 8 months
  • My dd was off puréed by 10 mths but all babies are different. As soon as we got the go ahead from our pedi for meats I just couldn't stand the though of pureeing beef and chicken it grossed me out. Dd loves chicken n meatballs and took to it right away in small pieces. From then on she hasn't had any puréed since.

People do often consider purees to be the first "solid" food as opposed to breast milk or formula but all food after that is solid food as well.  That's why it was confusing to ask about stopping solids.

    And it's all people food.

  • Your thought process and terminology is just a little weird.  If they drink it, it's a liquid.  Anything that's not a liquid is a solid, whether it's on a spoon or in their hand.  That said, bring on those finger foods.  It's totally fine to offer water for practice even if nothing actually makes it out of the cup.

  • Our son has been getting tiny tastes of food since he was 4 months old.   At 6 months I started making my own purees in the food processor and that lasted for about a month.   Since about 7 months he has been eating small amounts of food cut up in small pieces.

I started giving him a sippy cup with water in it at about 4 months as well and he loves it.   He is now 11 months old and eats anything and everything you put in front of him.   He still loves his water.   I give him puffs and melts for snacks as well.   There are some days I can not get him filled up.  If I do not feed him "real" food he will want to nurse all the time.
