Baby 3 days old and have breastfeeding ?s

Hey ladies.. It's been a year since I stopped bfding ds and I just had my second son three days ago. My milk came in today and I'm feeding on demand but my boobs are already hurting they are ao full. Do you recommend pumping to empty them or no because that will cause me to over produce?

Last time around I got mastitis my first week I had ds#1 and I don't want that again but he isn't eating enough to empty my breast yet. Thank you!!

Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born. 

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

    I think it is recommended to hand express just enough to remove pain. Otherwise you signal your body to keep producing that much

    Definitely do not pump if you are already engorged. That will make it worse and can contribute to oversupply. You can hand express and try warm showers etc. The engorgement is usually bad the first few days milk is in. Just keep feeding baby on demand and your body will figure it out.

    I also strongly recommend cold packs to help with the discomfort. Put them on between feeds, then you can switch to warm while feeding and use compressions to help empty the breast while feeding. If he's sleepy at the breast compressions will also keep the flow through your swollen ducts with steady flow he may be able to nurse longer/more consistently. Pumping will likely put you into oversupply mode. I EP'ed while DS was in the NICU and pumped till empty every 2-3 hours ATC. I ended up producing over 40 oz/day before I realized I needed to reign it in! Oversupply can be a blessing but can cause lots of problems also!

    Sounds good I just tried to express one last night while he was feeding and just deal with the uncomfortable boobs. Hopefully in a few days it will pass

    Warm showers for sure. I would take a bowl/container big enough for my breast, fill with hot/warm water and submerge. Helped alot, since I didn't have a pump or have a clue about hand expressing. Lol.

    I agree with PP about pumping just to get it flowing and letting it spray. Not pumping to empty or anything, but just to get some relief. You can also hand express. Good luck Momma!
