Relaxation class

So dh talked me into going to a class at babies r us tonight called "relaxation techniques for labor and delivery." I was hesitant to go because I was scared to even think of doing the birth without pain meds. Since we have known people that didn't get any relief from even an epidural, I decided it wouldn't hurt to go since the class was free. Well, I am so glad that we went! This lady teaching us was the most calming person I have met. She talked a lot about hypnobirthing and other ways to relax before and during labor. She really focused on staying calm and positive going into labor. I can't believe I can even say this but I'm not scared for the labor. I'm actually looking forward to using these new techniques to hopefully not need pain meds :) sorry this is kind of long but I wanted to share with someone and who better than a ton of women who will be experiencing this all soon also?

That's great that you found it so helpful! I think it's important to go in prepared to manage the pain even if you are planning to get all the drugs. You just never know, and if it helps you feel more in control of things, so much the better! We've really enjoyed practicing different strategies at our classes too.

  • I was so nervous about childbirth classes bc I was terrified of labor, but I felt completely better after just the first class (I've been to 2/5 so far). We opted to go to a Lamaze class (not the old school Bill Cosby style Lamaze) led by a doula rather than the hospital led class, and I'm so glad we did. Of course I'm making assumptions, but I feel like the hospital would push its own agenda on us during their class. In the Lamaze class, there's a lot about relaxation techniques and laboring positions and how to make it through labor with as few unnecessary medical interventions as possible. I feel so much better knowing i have options and a voice. Otherwise, I probably would've gone along with whatever the hospital recommends out of fear and naïveté. I'm glad we were both able to find something good. Hopefully they will really be helpful when D Day gets here!

  • Yes I'm anxious for delivery day to see if I will need something for pain or if I can go natural.
