Things Dr's say

So I saw my least favorite OB at my practice today and the things that come out of this guys mouth seem borderline malpractice to me. They are having a hard time controling my GD so he tells me he he doesnt want me to eat anything just drink water for the next 5 weeks. And then follows that up with that I could afford to lose the weight any way. Are you kidding me! I mean yes I am fat but I eat really healthy things and I'm following the GD diet how can a Dr say that to someone

  • Dick! Yes, please drink water only for the next 5 weeks.

Sounds like horrible bedside manner to me.

  • He's super awful. He has already told me my stitches wont stay because they don't on fat ppl. And then was reaming me out for having a c-section until I asked him to read my file and he saw that it was a medical needed c-section.

  • Um.......wow. No words for that.
  • What a jerk! Next time punch him in the face but I would be complaining about him.
  • Wow, that's awful! my grandmother told me that back when she was pregnant in the 50's her doctor tried to put her on a "bread and water" diet because she was gaining so much weight. turns out it was when she was pregnant with my AUNTS, as in twins. you'd think a doctor today would know better than to say something so ridiculous though.

  • Whoa, what an ass! I would definitely be saying something to the office about him. After I kicked him in the dick.

You should definitely complain about him to someone - whether it's another doctor at the practice you like, or something. I'm serious! There is one doctor I don't care for at my practice. He told me to do kick counts at 24 weeks, practically punched me in the solar plexus when demonstrating to the med student how to find fundal height (and said something idiotic like "don't be afraid to press hard"), and then gave me a hard time about weight gain, which at that point really wasn't severe. To top it off kept saying "yippee kayay" about everything (eg, "You chart says posterior placenta...yippee kayay"), to the point where I think DH almost punched him in the face. I complained about him to the doctor I love, and she said they've been getting a lot of complaints about him, and that he's new, so they're taking all of the comments very seriously. I think they're trying to build a case to get him out. So definitely do it!

  • Oh that's awful! He needs a dick punch, stat.

My first OB with DD produced the comment "you keep it neat down there".
I switched to a different OB.

  • I complained after my last appointment I'm not even supposed to see him I'm supposed to see only the female dr since I was a victim of an assult and am very uncomfortable being touched by men other than DH. The practice is garbage I would have switched but the only other place close to me couldnt have me. They are awful is there some where bigger than the office I can go to complain?

  • That's really horrible. I can't imagine dealing with that. I'm complaining about how openly my drs are complaining about my 26lb weight gain. That's nothing compared to what you're dealing with. There is no excuse for him treating you that way. Sorry you have that jerk for a doctor:(
  • I'm so sorry Dragons. I can't believe he treated you like that. Thats good advice. I am being seen by the perinatalogist every week at least they are nice to me

If there are no higher-ups, there are at least doctor review websites.  Broadcast that far and wide, because his complete asshole-ness should be known.

Oh ew.  All by itself that's creepy, but OBs chose to specialize in birth, which is not what I'd call neat, especially not 'down there.'  (WTF kind of OB says "down there" anyway?)

Wow these are all unbelievably rude things for anyone to say, much less for a professional who should be guiding/accompanying/providing professional services throughout (and in many cases, after) pregnancy. So awful!

@MK1013‌ at about 16 wks or so I saw a nurse instead of my GP and she strongly insinuated that I was starving myself and therefore my baby, out of vanity because I am (was) slim and had gained less than 5lbs. Fast forward to 34 wks and I don't even want to think about how she would comment on the fact that I have now gained 36 lbs (12 in the last month and a half).

Goes to show that anyone can be a jerk.

@SMM1986‌ that is SO creepy! You definitely did the right thing switching.
  • I'm sorry a doctor treated you that way, it is unbelievable. You should definitely complain, even if it's sending an anonymous letter or something. You shouldn't be treated like that.
  • That was seriously screwed up of your OB, OP. I would've racked the dude.

Tuesday, I was at my OB getting my weekly check up and I started to have some back pain and cramping. I told her as soon as I felt it and she got up, touched my belly and told me, "Oh, you're just having a contraction." I got hooked up to a monitor and had several more. She told me to go home and drink water. I downed about 6 bottles at home and nothing changed. I called in to tell them and they told me I must not be drinking enough. Thanks guys.
  • Wait, what? He told you to consume nothing but water for 5 weeks? That's dangerous for someone who ISN'T pregnant, let alone someone who is sustaining an extra human being. He shouldn't be practising if he thinks that's appropriate medical advice.

  • What a jackass!

My first OB was horrible. He told me my baby's heart rate was low at my first ultrasound when it wasn't, it was just at the low end of average. This was following my loss, so I freaked out.

He also told me not to run because "it might jolt the baby." So glad I switched doctors!

I'm pretty sure I would have ripped his balls off and DH damn well would have. Not joking- that is infuriating. Is there sown where higher like the liscencing agency for doctors (AMA?) to complain about him? Obviously definitely tell that practice what he did and that you will not only leave but if they do not correct his behavior will be sure to let everyone you know know about how poorly they handled it. And of course that you should never ever have to see his face again.

  • What an ass.  And especially, what a crappy practice to put you with a male OB after what you've been through :(

  • That is definitely unacceptable for him! I wouldnt let it go.
  • What a horrific thing to say! Not ok at all!

One of the OBs in the practice I go to has not been very good at all. During the beginning of my pregnancy, we always had a hard time finding LO's heartbeat. Well, for one appointment at around 17 weeks, we couldn't find it again, but this OB said he kinda heard it behind my own heartbeat. Instead of going in for an ultrasound, he said "I don't have a crystal ball, so I can't tell you that everything is going to be ok, but there is a heartbeat there." And sent me on my way. I spent the next few weeks freaking out that the OB didn't know for sure if everything was ok!

I feel like doctors sometimes say the most ignorant things because they try to "dumb it down" for us non-doctors and it comes out all wrong. They shouldn't assume we need things "dumbed down".

I hope you did file a complaint and that doctor gets reprimanded for his terrible bed side manner.
