Post-baby fitness

I just signed up for my first Tough Mudder in November to keep myself motivated to work out after the baby comes. I figured November was far enough away that it would be realistic enough to get my endurance and stamina back up. I'm already looking forward to it! I got a dumbbell set so I could work out at home while the baby is too small for the gym children center too. Anyone else setting fitness goals for after baby?

Re: Post-baby fitness

  • DH gave me a boxing book and gloves for Christmas because he knows how much better I feel when I'm in shape. We have a heavy bag in the basement and I can't wait to have at it!

  • @ksulli I've always been interested in trying out boxing. Is it difficult to learn? It sounds like a great way to get out aggression!

That's why I got the book- haven't done it yet, but it seems reasonable. I took kick boxing classes for a while that I enjoyed. Now I like the 'do it at home' aspect because it can be on my own schedule and at my own level of intensity. I guess I'm a solo sport kind of girl though- I grew up in gymnastics & tennis, then got into swimming later in life. All self-challenge type things.

  • I ran a half marathon right before my IVF cycle, I can't wait to start running again. I already have a double jogging stroller. I also have P90X and a TV in the garage. I'm hoping i can at least drop most of this weight in 3 months. I'm beyond huge right now.

  • I can't wait to start running again. I am so over being fat!! Lol I am planning on starting walks ASAP and then working into jogging/running. I am looking for a 5-10 k but I don't know when I want to commit to it probably depends in where it is and if it's 5 or 10. This is a perfect time if year to have a baby though bc we can get outside pretty quick after - here comes summer!!
  • SO wants to do insanity...I might attempt it. I told his SIL we could do it together because she's having a baby in June. I plan on doing lots of walking before I'm able to do that, and hopefully get back into running and maybe FINALLY do a 5k

  • I'm walking a 5K in May and will run one by Nov/Dec.  And be backpacking again after we move next winter/spring.

It's too damn hot down here to do any outdoors training in the summer really, hence the long wait on actually running the 5K.

Side note: anyone have advice on getting a dog to walk with the stroller?

Dog with stroller... that's a great question! It never cross my mind until now that I need to work with our dog to make this doable... oh dear!

I'm not sure how to say this without sounding snarky... But, train your dog. The common command heel (where they walk next to you rather than in front of you) is perfect for stroller walking. Sorry, no snakiness intended.

  • Nope, because I know how much of a cluster fuck my life is about to become with 4 kids. I'm a personal trainer, but I'm not taking on clients until August or September, and I won't be doing anything for myself until that point either. Trying to recover from the c-section and getting into a routine with 4 kids is more than enough to do this spring and summer.

  • Walking and getting back into Pure Barre. We go to Jackson Hole every summer for 3 weeks and I'm looking forward to the hiking! One of my best friends is getting married in August and I'd just like to be Not The Fattest Bridesmaid.

  • You bet your ass I will be itching for the all clear from the doc to start exercising again. Partly due to the fact that I want to look somewhat similar to my pre-pregnancy self for when I see my DH again after a long 9 months. Now hopefully dropping the baby weight and getting myself fit in a three month period is possible.
  • I am a fitness instructor and would love to get back to teaching classes by this summer! Other then that, I also run (well USED to run). Last year I ran 8 half marathons and a full marathon. I was put on partial bedrest almost 2 months ago and feel like I will struggle running my first mile again!!  I would like to sign up for a race early fall. Maybe start with a 10K before getting back into the half marathon again. I do have a half marathon planned for Feb 2015 (Disney Princess!!) But, I BETTER be ready by then!!

  • My sister just became a beachbody coach. I plan on joining along with the workouts and whatnot as soon as I feel able to do it. It is the beachbody workout videos and support. So I can do it at home with baby girl
  • I'm planning on running a 10k in October which I think is a pretty modest goal given the distances I was doing last summer. I'm more concerned on focusing on strength and weight training. I was close to earning my black belt in taekwondo before I got pregnant and would like to be able to earn it by feb 2015, so I need to get my strength back asap. So done with feeling big and slow and pathetic.
  • I have practiced with dog and stroller... I clip her to the stroller on a short lead, but always unclip if I am going to let go for any reason. She got the hang of it quickly.

@jessech89 Good luck with the Tough Mudder!  DH did one last May and I was really impressed (they mean it when they call it tough).  I'm figuring I'll start doing my pilates DVD again at some point after I'm cleared to exercise again, and then by July my goal is to be back in Crossfit.
  • When DS was born, I walked the Heart Run 5K a week later.  I was sore afterword, but I walked the whole thing while pushing him in the stroller.  This LO is due 6 days before the Heart Run this time, so if he or she is here, and we're not in the hospital, we'll probably do the same thing.

I also planning on training for an actual running 5K once I get the all clear from the doctor.

And I have a rowing machine and a rebounder at home for workouts when I can't leave the house.

I'm signed up for a 10 mile in August and a Half Marathon in October. I'll sign up for a few races in June and July too. My plan is to start walking almost right away until I'm cleared to run, then it's game on :)
  • Ran my fastest full marathon 2 months before getting pregnant. I stopped running at 24 weeks. I miss it so much, like ocd ticks when people jog by me in the park. Hope to get back to full marathon ready status by February. Can't wait to start eating paleo and cutting out all the sugar and crap too.
  • I cannot wait to start working out again. I was able to keep doing Zumba up to 32 weeks because it's so easy to modify it/take it easy, but I stopped teaching classes at about 16 weeks. I totally agree with little lady about the dogs, our dogs walk well but I'm thinking it might take a little more training to get them both to walk with the stroller between them, they're used to being side by side. I plan on walking with them and LO ASAP. I really didn't expect the end of pregnancy to slow me down as much as it did. I can barely handle the grocery store at this point.

  • I'll be walking with baby in the stroller or Moby as soon as I am able and once cleared to resume workouts, I really want to start Crossfit! I've continued working out throughout pregnancy and only significantly reduced intensity and weight within the past 2 month so I'm hoping I don't lose too much strength! I have a Warrior Dash scheduled for August too!
  • I wish I could set some kind of running goal, but with temps in the 100s, I know realistically that that wouldn't make sense. I definitely have a goal of getting back into running in October, maybe. I can't remember, but I *think* that's when an early morning run might be manageable, temperature wise.

I would like to keep going to yoga, if DH can watch our little one. We're also planning to spend some time in California this summer, so my goal is a daily walk while we're there.

    Keeping the goals realistic :)

  • I will just ease back into what I was doing before that worked for me. I live in a small town with no big gym, but was already doing my stuff at home. I do strength with dumbbells and a kettlebell. I run and sometimes throw in some yoga. I'll do what kills, which will be less than before. And those reps/sets will slowly increase, as will my mileage. I'll start with walking with baby, then add in light jogs when DH is home to watch the baby since I can't jog with her until 6 months. I'm not worried, I'll get there again because it's important to me and I am looking so forward to getting my energy and muscle tone back (the best I can after 3 kids!)

  • I am planning to sign up for a 5 mile 'whine' run on September 1st at one of our local vineyards. If getting my body back doesn't motivate me enough, hopefully having wine at the finish line will!
  • i am doing the dirty girl run in august. i also plan to choose a different lake to walk around at least 3 times a week with baby. minnesota has 10,000 lakes and plenty in my area so i figure it will be a good way to start working out right away and get me out of the house.

  • Probably will do the same slacker workouts that I did before pregnancy. I am still actually going to the gym 2-3x a week but doing the most low-fi workouts imaginable.

SO and I do a lot of hiking and wild foraging in the summer...I am looking forward to bringing LO along for that!

I plan on going back to CrossFit as soon as I'm ready and will get some runs in when I can. I'm not worried about dropping baby weight, but that I've been losing my butt from not doing heavy squats! However it might just be that my bump is bigger than my butt now so now my butt looks small in comparison, haha! I'm looking forward to getting back though. It took me about a month to be able to do a pull-up after laparoscopic surgery, but only 2 more to get up to 12. I am expecting that a pull-up after a pregnancy will be a challenge as well, if not even harder!
  • I was doing so well with my weight loss and working out before BFP. I discovered Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown a few months before I got KU and was losing some serious weight and LOVED it!

We will be getting all of our cattle in April 15th so there will be a ton of work to do that will get me in shape quickly. We also have several sections that need some new fence built so I will have arms of steel by the end of the year.

  • @luvU2theMoon‌ - I'm in Bloomington! If you're ever looking for a walking buddy, let me know! I'm incredibly out of shape but used to live a couple blocks from Lake Calhoun and loooove lake walks :)

I started cross fit literally 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant! Since then my sister has gotten really into it and is a total beast. She's gotten me super excited to restart it!

I'm in the TC area too! Can't wait for all this snow to be GONE. I am so ready to start daily walks again and eventually move up to some light jogging.
