I only had 2 with my first (dating and anatomy scan). I've had a lot more with this pregnancy because she's measured on the smaller size so I've had a few growth ultrasounds.
I think it's dependent on the practice. My OB does them at every appointment, regardless of the pregnancy. Being high risk means I have more frequent appointments And I go to a MFM for more detailed ultrasounds every few weeks. My office doesn't do fundal measurements; they check head and abdominal size via US at each appointment.
I knew this wheni was pregnant with my first and was fortunately able to get insurance that covers 100% of the ultrasounds. Otherwise, this would get prohibitive quickly.
Ive had 2 surprise U/S in the past 2 appointments but I'm AMA and he wanted to check growrth and fluid levels at my last 2 appointments. Otherwise i wouldn't have had ones until 36 weeks . I loved it other than DH missed both of them since we didn't know I was getting them.
I had one at 32 weeks (this week) but only because we moved and I switched practices...so they wanted to basically re-do the entire anatomy scan for their own records... it was fun to see the baby again but it took forever because he's so cramped in there that it took a long time for them to get the measurements they needed. Some, they weren't able to get at all (which is why they do them earlier)...if I would have remained with my other practice I wouldn't have had any more after my a/s at 18 weeks. I know it feels like a long time! Like pps said, you can always do an elective to put your mind at ease
I was not scheduled to have one, but I brought up at my 30 week appointment that I had IUGR last pregnancy and they agreed to do one at 32 weeks. I got the impression, though, that this was only because of the prior IUGR and that if everything looked okay it would be my last before baby.
In my last pregnancy, they went a really long time between ultrasounds...hence, my iugr was missed for a long time and I wasn't given an ultrasound until I was measuring 4 weeks behind and in tears in the OB's office.

I had one at 8, 12 and 20 weeks. Probably another one after 36 weeks to determine and confirm position but other than that none for me. The MW decided the less the better.
Same as everyone else, I had my last one for my A/S scan at 22 weeks. I had a lot with DS because of some things they considered high risk. I do miss seeing baby all the time, but Im glad not to have to deal with doctors all the time.
My office does another anatomy scan at 30 weeks and then again at 36 weeks. However, with my GD diagnosis and now having started on insulin this week, I will be getting an U/S at every appointment to monitor her growth.
I was told at my 23 weeks appt that my A/S showed a marginal placenta so she said I needed a growth scan at 28 and 36 weeks... I had one at 29 weeks and it showed A normal heathy placenta so luckily I won't need another at 36 weeks but in my previous pregnancies I only ever had 2 one at 11-13 weeks and another at 20
I have only had 1 at 20 weeks and my doc said the only reason we'd have another is if he feels that the little guy is still breech at my 34 week appt coming up in 2 weeks. I have a feeling he may still be breech, so we'll see!
Agree with a lot of posters. My midwife wouldn't be going another one but bc little guys kidney measurement was off from Normal values at my AS scan they will be going one at 36 w to see if it resolved itself in utero (which I am told does a lot of the time). If it hasn't that means baby boy will be getting an ultrasound 2 w post birth and monitored closely for pee diapers. I'm nervous for it. It's a total blessing to not have to have another!
It is standard for a low risk pregnancy to not have any but the anatomy scan & maybe an early dating one. And I'd side-eye any doctor doing one just for size/positioning. Unless he can't tell by feeling your belly how baby is positioned. And even ACOG says u/s is not reliable for measuring size.
I am high risk so I've had one at 8, 13, 18 a/s and then every 4 weeks until 33 weeks when I will have them weekly and twice weekly NST/BPP. While I am thrilled to see her a lot especially to monitor her position as she has been breech for 3 months- it would be nice to have a more normal pregnancy. Thankfully though I know this is to keep her healthy and safe.
