I think decorative towels that aren't meant to be used are a little silly. It also doesn't help that some people expect them to be used, while some people don't, so I am always confused about whether to use them or not. (For instance, my aunt puts them up during Christmas, but there are never any alternate towels. So I assume she wants us to use them, but I know some people can't stand that, which makes me always second guess using them.)
I equate a southern accent with not being smart. I know there are smart southerners but I have difficulty separating my "dumb" character voice for "southern" character voice in my head. Sorry southerners, I've been northeast for too long now! (I do have two very good southern friends who are smart ladies but I can't help but make fun of their drawl!)
I think a signing book for a first birthday party is overkill. I also don't get the smash cake craze. There will be a cake a DD will get a slice with which to smash, eat, make a mess ect.
With the exception of daycare, I don't think babies are that expensive. We BF, CD, and almost all her toys and clothes are hand me downs or gifts.
Yeah, daycare cost is ridiculous! If it weren't for that, our main cost would be formula and clothes, and there are ways to save on both. But daycare costs as much per year as a couple of years at a community college!
I don't understand why people still say they EBF. I think all of our LOs are on solids right now, so I don't feel like the words "exclusively breast fed" fit in anymore. I always just preferred to use BF anyway. I don't think in the context, anyone would confuse it as boyfriend lol. I feel like the only thing EBF actually means now is NFF (not formula fed). SWIDT? Lolz. Moar acronyms!

When I first joined and people would have EBF badges that would say We EBF for 1 year, I was very confused because of course they need solids so they are not EBF. I get that they mean no bottles, but at the same time is an occasional bottle really that big of a deal?

The whole EBF thing is just a covert way of looking down at ff or bottles in my mind. And this is from someone who "EBF" for the first 6 months of both babes. The E is unecessary.
I think the older generation of women in business are impeding the younger generation with programs like "lean in" and such. The egalitarian shift is already happening. The social changes are well under way and the corporate changes will happen as younger generations move up within the companies. The pay inequality is abhorrent, but I really think it will change organically.

I think that's ridiculous. I have used EBF before and all it has (ever) meant to me is that the baby is being only BFed at the time. I think you can supplement with formula for a while and then go to EBF when there is no need for supplementing anymore.
I'm so freaking sick of people looking for ways to fuel mommy wars. There is nothing "covert" about the E at all.
I just feel like breastfed suffices. The word "exclusive" has snooty connotations almost everywhere it is used. It may not be meant to sound like you're looking down at someone but that word just implies it. I get the whole won't take a bottle thing because DS1 wouldn't take one but I still just said he's breastfed and there everyone knew he got the boob from that so why add another word?

I haven't read Lean In and I have no desire to ....
It's the worst...basically the reason women aren't successful is because we don't want it hard enough...
On the lean in and women topic I think banning bossy is ridiculous. I've been bossy my whole life and true bossy people don't give a flying f if you call them bossy. And I don't think it's a gender specific thing because I call DS1 bossy all the time. Silly Beyoncé. Was this already discussed? Sorry if I missed that .

If we look at it that way, why even say "breast" fed? That might imply that breast feeding is better than any other type of feeding. I'm sure it hurts some women who can't BF. Let's just use FED.
This whole thing is a non-issue to me since I don't look for implied or passive meanings/insults/etc anywhere. Who cares? EBF, FF, BF PF (Pepsi fed)...it's all the same to me. Baby is fed and happy.
Dude. This wasn't a mommy wars topic, it was a semantics topic. BFing and FFing are obviously different things that have their own sets of joys and challenges. NOT saying one is better than the other, but to just ignore the difference is a little silly, IMO. Call it what it is. Which was my whole point to begin with, that nobody is exclusively feeding their LO BM anymore. BF (or FF, or PF) FTW!

I have a feeling it may be true that I won't "be successful" in my field because I in fact don't "want it hard enough." Other people that are willing to work 80 hours a week will probably end up "ahead" of me. Some of them will be men. Some of them will be women. I'd rather lean into vacation, but I'm not so sure my gender has anything to do with it....
I haven't read the book, but I feel like the idea buys into the concept that women have to try harder and do better in order to be considered just as good. That totally sucks. It's also probably true at the moment, not just for women, but for all manner of "others"/minority groups in various fields. Sometimes the truth is crappy like that. I guess I'll just have to be comfortable knowing that I *could* be just as competent as the top men in my profession if I really wanted that and focused on it. Meanwhile, I'll take naps with my baby on Saturday afternoons and work in my garden instead of checking my email. I feel like our culture is even turning "me time" into a responsibility that we all have to schedule, and I'm sick of that attitude. Why does every single detail of life have to be a piece of an elaborate plan for "success?"

I think its silly for adults (my husband included) to get all giddy over a new movie that just came out ( frozen.) The movie was no good. adults on my fb were posting pictures of their new movie. Like, what's the big deal with this cartoon?
I equate a southern accent with not being smart. I know there are smart southerners but I have difficulty separating my "dumb" character voice for "southern" character voice in my head. Sorry southerners, I've been northeast for too long now! (I do have two very good southern friends who are smart ladies but I can't help but make fun of their drawl!)

Wow. This is so stereotypical and ignorant. Apparently you need to venture out from under your northeastern rock.
About Lean In, I'm planning to read it soon so I can't give direct opinions on the book yet (because it's not really fair to assume what it says without reading it for myself). But I think we all just have to learn to accept trade offs. If I want to work part time for awhile and want flexibility in my job, then it's not inconceivable that male I work with on my same level would get paid more. He's getting more experience than I am. If I have to leave at 4:30 or 5 and he can stay and put in extra billable hours each day - then he should be rewarded. But I think women should be given those trade off choices. And if women choose to kick butt t work then they should be paid the same as a man, but if they choose to not push as hard in their job, then it's fair that they aren't compensated the same.
I don't think women can "have it all". I think that's a notion that will just drive someone crazy trying to get there. For the most part, you can't have a super successful career and spend as much time with your kids and your husband and have me time as you might want. I think you have to make tough choices and find a balance that works for you. And that balance might change at different points in your life.
Anyways. Regarding EBF - I agree with the original point. No one is EBF now. And I don't see anything wrong with using the term when it's applicable. When I went to the pedi when N was younger, they asked me if EBF. We ff now but not EFF because she eats solids
And regarding southern accents, @calikat80 have you seen House of Cards? We're only a couple episodes in, but I love his accent. It's disarming . But yeah, I think you need to get over that. I'm from the south and work with some incredibly brilliant people with southern accents. I hate the stereotype northerners have of the south as this hillbilly area where no one is cultured or intelligent. It's very narrow minded. One reason I like Chicago right now - awesome city with all the cool things to do, and none of the pretentiousness of a lot of other large cities. (I'm glad you say you know it's not true. I just know some people aren't that open minded and it irks me).
I do not like seeing a child with a soother (Pacifier) after one years old. I trained two twins yesterday and they have a 2 yr old brother with a soother running around the courts. ABSOLUTELY NOT. I judged very hard.
I equate a southern accent with not being smart. I know there are smart southerners but I have difficulty separating my "dumb" character voice for "southern" character voice in my head. Sorry southerners, I've been northeast for too long now!

@40Luv I agree. I knew of a 4 year old who still used a pacifier. He wouldn't go anywhere without that thing. He even talked with it in his mouth and you couldn't understand a word he said. Plus it was so dirty and disgusting from dropping it on the ground and putting it right back in his mouth. Yuck!
Ooh, I have one. Sometimes I wish I had the tv on a little more when I was on maternity leave. LO literally has no interest and the one time a week I want him to just sit for 10 minutes while I straighten up, it's a no go. Luckily he loves the Ergo and still loves the jumparoo.
@violet1183 I had the tv on all the time while I was on maternity leave and DD still has no interest in it.
@calikat80 my step-dad is an incredibly intelligent man with a thick southern accent.
My hopefully popular opinion is that I can't stand it when people decide how intelligent I am based on what kind of accent I have. That is seriously something that makes me mad. I can't tell you how many times I have to convince people I am not married to my brother and don't believe in shoes, all because I live in the south. I've been a lot of places - morons are everywhere.
Maybe you've been watching too much duck dynasty?? I love a southern drawl and know a lot of intelligent men/women from the south who have one.
Yeah, as an educated southerner this is offensive. There is a difference between a redneck backwoods hick and a southern drawl.
Even if you have a redneck backwoods accent, that shouldn't reflect on your intelligence. I know a lot of smart hicks. Not everyone is well-spoken but that is true across the US and all countries.
(this isn't a rant against you, sctiger... I am just ranting In my twangiest accent.)
Ummmm what? I am a "northerner" (from Chicago) through and through. I think southern accents are awesome and I wish I had one. People who have a southern accent sound so pretty and classy.
I think people who say you need to put your child down to sleep by X time and if that means you don't get to see them at all during the week then you'll just have to make it up on the weekends are seriously out of touch with reality. (brought to you by a facebook friend's parenting rant)
Ha! You guys I didn't say all southerns were ignorant or not smart. I obviously know that there are smart people nations wide. But it's kind of like what wren was saying about NPR- they sound like the smartest people in the world to me and you can't detect an accent from anywhere. I had a hardcore buffalo accent before I went to college and I lost it quick because I didn't hear how bad it sounded until I had a roommate from California (they have like, no accent). Also my two good friends from Louisiana had serious drawls when I met them, but after being at school in the northeast they all together dropped it. I don't know what the deal is but most people seem to strive for no accent. And giggle no, no duck dynasty here but I did watch magic mike and Matthew mccounaghy have me some serious evidence for my stereotype!
My family is much more important to me than any career and I refuse to feel bad about that. When I go back to work full time it will be so we can pay for extras, like vacations, and savings for the kids. Not to work my way up any ladder. I will say no thanks to that stress.
My family is much more important to me than my career too. I don't know anyone who would say otherwise. That doesn't mean my career isn't something I care about nor does it mean I should give it up. Working my way up the ladder does not imply that I am choosing career over family.
You are right about the stress though. It is an added stress to juggle both.

NPR has it's own accent. Every time I listen to them I think about how they have an accent all their own. It's weird!
