Re: What are you reading?

  • I don't know about that series @Studyinpink‌ but not all of his book are scary IMO. Delores Claiborne is a good one that to me wasn't scary. Also I haven't read the whole series yet,but The Green Mile isn't scary.

  • @Studyinpink It's kind of scary. I'd say it's more of a fantasy epic than anything though. Some scary/suspenseful parts, but not intended to be a horror story.
  • I am reading The Sex Lives of Cannibals:  Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific

So far it's good, not great, but I'm still in the beginning.

@kasstik I just wanna say stick with the series through the end, it is truly worth it. I absolutely love the Dark Tower.
Will do! That's what i hear from everyone who has read it. :)
  • Perfect! I will add the series to my list! @kasstik

  • I'm near the end of Gone Girl, very suspenseful, I'm liking it! Before that, I read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and it was brilliant. One of the more intense books I've read in awhile but really great writing, an edgy and often intense coming-of-age story with amazing characters. Before that, I loved The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern. It's a magical tale of two illusionists that are placed into a tournament against each other but fall in love. It's set in early 1900's Europe and the circus/ vaudevillian theme is a beautiful backdrop for the story.

I titted for The Goldfinch and Gone Girl, so I will have to read The Night Circus since we obviously have similar tastes!  :-)

I didn't think Gone Girl was suspenseful at all. I thought it was the opposite actually, very predictable.

  • vandelay If you read it, definitely let me know what you think. I recommended it to a friend who loved The Goldfinch and recommended Gone Girl to me, but she didn't like it. Other friends have loved it, though. I've seen it described as an example of "magical realism," so if you don't like fantasy/ magic it might not be your cup of tea, but I really enjoyed the imagery, the creativity, and the love story.

DragonBlood13 Maybe I'll feel that way after I've finished, but I just got through the major plot twist and I definitely didn't see it coming. I'm also listening to the book on Audible instead of reading it, so perhaps that makes a difference in perception of suspenseful vs. predictable.

  • If you are looking for a reading rec: read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon!

There are 7 books with the final book coming out this summer. I'm currently mid book 6, and I LOVE this series. Also, STARZ is making a TV show based on book 1 beginning this summer.

The books are kinda long but worth it. Read these books so we can talk about them!

  • @HilarityEnsued‌ I'm going to have to try that trilogy. I've seen it recommended quite a few times.

  • Is it "young adult" or whatever, @HilarityEnsued? Not that it matters, I'm just curious.

  • When I want a quick read that is light and entertaining, I've been picking up some of Liane Moriarty's books.  I've read the Husband's Secret and The Last Anniversary, and I think one other one that I can't remember.  They aren't life changing or anything, but are decently entertaining.

I really enjoyed the Discovery of Witches books, and would recommend them.

I've also read all the Outlander books and really enjoyed them for the most part, though one or two fo the books did seem to drag a bit.  I recommended them to my mother and she said she couldn't get through the first one because there was too much sex.  LOL.

People love The Goldfinch, and I enjoyed parts of it, but overall I just wasn't that into it.

I read a couple of Nina LaCour books, The Disenchantments and something else.  They are YA, but I thought they were enjoyable.

Another book that I really enjoyed recently was The Rosie Project.  I thought the story was good and the characters were pretty interesting.

Another I might recommend is The Girl You Left Behind by JoJo Moyes.

    I read a lot.

The Girl You Left Behind was a great book. Have you read Me Before You? I thought it was even better!

I felt like The Husband's Secret would make a decent made for TV movie. It was entertaining, but I felt like it left a lot to be desired. It was worth the read though!

  • @WillieNelsonsGardener

I agree that The Husband's Secret left something to be desired and the ending kind of frustrated me, but I enjoyed the read anyway.

I have not read Me Before You, but my sister also said it was worth reading, so I think I'll get it after this current boring book I'm trying to get through....  A lot of times I just order whatever is cheap on Amazon for the kindle.  Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much.

  • @HilarityEnsued--I keep wanting to explain how I specifically felt about The Husband's Secret, but I can't say it without spoiling and I feel like this thread is not the place to spoil books.

  • @angelaashly it's brilliant.  The writer is a historian so there is tons of interesting history in there, but not presented in some boring manner... plus vampires, witches, ghosts, etc.  It's just incredible.  And she's an excellent writer.  It was the last time that I've seriously not been able to put down a book.

I'm going to re-read all of them before the third one comes out.
That sounds awesome! definitely going on my wishlist now. Thanks
  • @HilarityEnsued‌ I'm definitely reading the all souls trilogy!! Please spoil The husbands secret for me!!
