There's someone on the name board....

Whose twin girls are 18 days old and still nameless.

I guess she will just decide when she registers them for kindergarten.

  • Wow, I know names can be hard, but that is crazy!

  • I had a friend in elementary school whose younger brother was nameless for 8 WEEKS. He ended up with a first name and THREE middle names because the parents couldn't decide.

  • Woah. Isn't that how Peekabo Street got her name? I believe her parents left her nameless until she was a toddler so she could pick her own name.
  • My brother went 30 days nameless, they called him "Master [last name]" his whole stay (was in NICU). He was later named Jacob Alexander.

  • Also, a girl I went to basic training with was never named, she went by "Roundtree" because that was her last name and the only name on her BC.

Wait so she just NEVER had a first name? Not even an "unofficial" one?

I'm just surprised you can bring babies home without a name. I thought you had to fill out the birth certificate before you left.

  • Her husband is overseas - I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

  • Either way, you had months and months. She doesn't even seem close to having anything.....her short lists aren't even short.

Nope, she ended up being a stripper (go figure!) and went by that name when she was older. I forget what it was though. She said everyone called her "Roundtree" growing up.

Back in the old days I don't think it was required to have a name. I honestly don't know that it's required these days.

  • You can leave the hospital without a name?

Hmm. You learn something new every day.

  • The hospital I'm delivering at will hold onto the birth certificate info for 10 days after birth, after that they discard it and it's up to you to get a new worksheet and mail it in. From what I've heard though, nurses will really push you to finish the worksheet (which would obviously include officially naming the baby) before you are discharged. They can even threaten to not discharge you/baby until it's filled out, but there is no official mandate for that.

  • I guess I don't understand people not having a name within a few days of their child being born. It was very easy for my DH and I to agree on names.
  • I don't think that a hospital can really refuse to discharge you if you haven't picked a name yet. It is much easier to do it in the hospital though, so they really push you to do it there. After you leave if you haven't filled out the paperwork you have to do it all yourself and I guess it can be more work.

  • They give us the paperwork at our hospital, but we have to mail it to Vital Statistics after we are discharged.  Some of the parents I know took an extra couple of days after discharge to decide... but not as long as this!

  • Are her babies in the NICU? I could understand not naming a baby until you know for sure he's gonna make it... Dunno if that's the case here.

  • But...how long do you need?! Seriously, is 9 months not long enough?

  • Her husband is overseas because his father died--he was there for the birth and after (post history). How do you not pick a name before you leave the hospital?!?

  • Maybe I've been wearing my bitch pants lately, but I just don't get how you need longer than 9 months.

My husband and I had a terrible time agreeing on a girl name. But we still managed to get it done, about 3 months ago.

  • We don't have a name for our little guy yet, but we will pick a name before we leave the hospital. I don't think its a big deal to not have a name before the kid is born. But we figure it out quick after they're born! Sometimes you just gotta see them before you name them!
I know a family who had a kid around thanksgiving and he still wasn't named by christmas.

  • I felt like a slacker because we are 30 weeks and have no clue what we will name this babe.
  • We still haven't decided between our top two choices. It may come down to a game time decision once we meet our baby girl but we will definitely be picking one before we leave the hospital, even if it means picking one of the two out of a hat or flipping a coin.

  • DS had a name before we knew he was going to be a boy, DD however, is arriving via c-section in 56 days and we still can't decide on a name.  Sounds like she has a really rough delivery and a bunch of complications and one of the babies was in the NICU, then a death in her family leading her DH to have to fly to South Africa, etc...  I wouldn't have wanted to leave the hospital without names, but lord, it seems like as long as they are alive and healthy that names are the last of their worries after dealing with so much :(  Just having twins is overwhelming, not to mention all of the other stuff they are going through.  I feel bad for this family.

  • We have a girls name locked down but boys names are proving way harder. We had a short list of 3 but we both admitted last week that we are not in love with any of them. If LO is a boy, I'm hoping seeing him will make one of the names feel right.
  • In Canada you have so long to name your child (I want to say a year but that sounds wrong) … luckily picking names came easy to us so we aren't stuck between choices.

I've actually known 2 families who changed their child's name a couple months after birth … should have stuck with their original choice and had buyer's remorse (lack of a better word).

    Good luck to that family.
  • We'll be naming ours before we leave the hospital.  If we don't then we have to take the paperwork to the state capitol ourselves, which is a 2 hour drive away.  No thank you.

We will choose between our top 2 contenders when we meet him. Everyone ( one SIL in particular) have been driving us crazy since we announced to pick a name and it makes me want to dig my heels in.

Funny story, my youngest brother was "Anthony" for the first week of his life before he became Jonas (other brother chose this name based on a character in the TV show Whimsy's House lol). Anthony would not have suited him at all.
  • Sigh...I saw this yesterday and still can't believe she's serious. Those poor babies.
  • Here in uk we don't get the bc at the hospital. We're given 6 weeks to go to the local council office and registar baby and get the bc. I've known a few to leave it until the 6th week as they've not known what to name their child. After that you can change the name easily for up to a year. After that any name changes need to go through Deed Poll. Personally I'd feel weird not having a name as soon as baby is born. X
