Missing Person - Update

edited March 2014 in August 2013 Moms
I own a facility where people pay us to keep and care for their horses. We run a nice, clean facility that people come to and never really leave. Most of the people who keep their horses with us have been here 10 or more years. We know each other very, very well.

One of the ladys who keeps her horses with us comes out 6-8 hours a day Monday - Friday. She has 2 horses, is retired, lives alone and never comes out with friends or family. She has never provided us with emergency contacts for her or her horse. She has been here for 13 years, never made a late payment and only misses days when it is raining really heavily. She is extremely quite. I can honestly say that I know very little about her beyond our "horse life" together. She has been missing since March 6th. No one has seen her. She missed paying her rent on the 15th (which is totally out of character - she normally pays on time or early,) and she left blankets on her horses because it was raining around the 6th, but now it is 82 degrees - this is also totally out of character. (I pulled the blankets off for her.)

- she has no family or friends that we know of to contact
- I don't have a driver's license number
- I have her address and telephone number but the sheriff went by and she is not there and she is not answering her phone

I have called the sheriff and had them do a welfare check on her. Her house was locked up, with a package on the porch. Neighbors have not seen her and many phone calls have gone unreturned from me and her small group of friends out here. This is not a woman who would just leave her horses behind. This is not a woman who would leave a bill unpaid, even for a day. This is not a woman who would leave blankets on her horses so that they are overheated in the sun.

Tomorrow I will be filing a Missing Person Report with local law enforcement so they will begin checking local hospitals and jails (highly unlikely,) and be allowed to go into her home to check on her.

I'm worried about this woman who has been in my life for 13 years. She has an old, blind horse who is terrified of everyone but her - what is going to happen to him if she doesn't come back? I'm so worried. I can't think of any good scenario that would keep her away for this long. :(

How does someone just vanish into thin air? Anyone have a similar experience with a happy ending? Any suggestions of something else I can do? She has no social media accounts or anything - we are talking about a modern day hermit here. Ugh.

***UPDATE***

The sheriff found her last night at a local hospital. After several phone calls we learned she had a systemic infection and had been hospitalized since the 7th. She is on the road to a full recovery, but will likely be in the hospital for a few more days. I'm just so thankful she is okay! (Can't lie, partially because now I don't have to be the one to handle her horse!)

I'm fine. Sore and achy, but so relieved it makes up for it!

Re: Missing Person - Update

  • So because of my job we have had cases like this. They usually wind up just visiting some random friend or some random trip or transported to the hospital.

It seems very out of character for her by what you are describing.

Unfortunately, I would lean more towards the thoughts she passed away and is in her house. I'm really surprised the sheriffs department did not get into her house to do a welfare check. Sorry to be grim and hopefully this is not the case.

No one that you know of has a key to her house to allow law enforcement to go in?? Possibly a neighbor. Hopefully after the missing person report the department will do a little more follow up.

Also ca law states there is no waiting period to file a missing person report. So if you want one the department must take report so don't let them tell you no.

  • I'm guessing you don't have a picture either? :/ my only suggestions would be to get her picture out after you make the report. I'm sorry you're going through this and I'm saying some prayers.

  • Also look up adult protective services in your area. See if they can do follow up too.

Working in a hospital, I see a lot of I unidentified people come in from car wrecks, etc. it takes time to ID them. Checking there is the best bet.

But honestly, if she hasn't been seen since at least the 6th, that's a really long time.

I hope she's ok. Thinking and praying for her.

I had the same thought about her having passed away in her house. I guess they look for flies in the windows and such (talk about grim,) but there was no evidence.

She is an extremely private person, so I didn't want to push too hard too soon, but I really feel like she must be in a desperate situation at this point. We do not know anyone with a key to her place. There is a landlord involved but he wants the sheriff to demand to be let in, (which it looks like will be happening this afternoon.)

The sheriff we are working with also keeps his horses with us and knows her too. He agrees that nothing good is going on here.

Yes, we called the closest hospitals but there were not any current Jane Doe females, although she may have left over a weekend (which would be typical,) and have had something happen out of town.

We have a fairly low resolution picture of her one her horse which we have provided to law enforcement.

I have no advice to add to what has already been suggested. I sincerely hope that there is some explanation for her missing that doesn't involve her death.

What would happen to her horses? I wonder if she has a will written?

I'll be thinking about her and hoping for her safe return.
"The cleaning, the scrubbing will wait til tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So, quiet down cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."

This is exactly what I was thinking too. I have no idea. She is the kind of person who would have made provisions for what to do with them, (there are 2, but the 2nd one is young, healthy, etc. the blind, old, slightly dangerous one is the one I'm concerned about,) but what if she remains missing? What if whoever was in her will doesn't know where her horses are?

And then we are talking about her like there is no chance she is okay. That makes me so sad!

I just feel awful. I should have made her give me an extra number for someone else to call for the horses at least. I have no idea what to do at this point.

  • I'm sorry - of course there is a chance that she is okay!

Do you know of a veterinarian that she may have been in contact with? Maybe one that has been caring for the older horse?

We use the same vet who is an old family friend. The vet was here today helping me catch the old horse to remove the blanket. I called her (the vet) because she one of my closest friends and I let her know about this lady's disappearance hoping she had called the clinic and because I was hoping she could help me catch the horse.  We are all deeply involved in each others horse life, but away from here we know little to nothing about her.

I hate to even mention this, but someone told me the reason this lady, (lets just call her CeeCee,) was such a hermit was because she was violently attacked when she was in her mid thirties.

    (edited due to toddler help.)

  • I have no advice beyond what's been said...just want to send out good thoughts to this woman in hopes she is located soon & is safe.
  • I'm so sorry, Bella. I hope there will be some clues to her disappearance when the police get inside her home.

My goodness.  I am so sorry.  I hope everything works out.  At my barn, they have always required an emergency contact for this very reason.  We actually had something kind of similar happen a few years ago.  A lady who had always been a little flakey, but still always showed up at least weekly, didn't show up for a few weeks.  We were extremely worried, called her emergency contact (who had no idea where she was), etc... in her case she had gone on a work trip which ended up taking longer than she had expected.  She forgot to notify us.  I hope it ends up being something like this.  I am so sorry!
We do have an emergency contact for literally EVERY other boarder. She is the only one without a contact. :(

  • No advice here but my T&P's go out to her.
  • T&Ps that she is found soon and us alive and well.
  • Hugs @BellaOso‌ you are incredibly sweet to be distraught over her...I'll be praying that some good news comes your way soon. I'm glad she has you looking out for her.

  • I haven't read others PPs yet before posting, but as far as filing the report I think you are definitely doing the right thing. It is very very strange that after 13 years she has suddenly disappeared.
I have no words for her house. I am sending all my love to her horse (he/she).
Like I said I'll probably find out more when I read the responses, but how is the horse with you? If you have known the horse also for 13 years, surely there is some relationship between you and the horse also. I am by no means any sort of animal whisperer but use this to your advantage as far as the horse is concerned. @bellaoso I know you know enough and have spent so much time around horses it's all second nature,

I would just say until the woman/friend/client goes, other than what the police can do I don't have any suggestions. I have complete confidence in you that you will be able to care for the horse.

I am at a loss doe words really for this post, hence the ramble. But I am thinking of you and will keep all 3 of you in my prayers.
  • Oh my. How sad. I hope all is figured out soon.

  • I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayer for my missing friend. I went in with her horse tonight to remove a piece of equipment called a flymask and he ran me over. I got trapped underneath him for about 10 seconds (remember, he can't see,) and he hit me in the face, head and nose several times before I was able to get out from underneath him.

I have been at the ER for the last 6 hours and have a fractured facial bone. Sooo... that was fun.

    Today has been pretty shitty.
