Vitamin D drops when BFing?

At the pediatrician appt the doctor prescribed vitamin D drops for LO, as she recommends all breastfeed babies to take them. I nursed DD for 13 months and was never told this. Anyone else with a BF baby been recommended to give these?

Re: Vitamin D drops when BFing?

  • Yup. The hospital told us we need to give her 400 iu a day.

Yep I bfed my dd who is almost two and never heard anything about it but was told to get them for this LO in the hospital as well.
  • Yup, my doc recommended I give vitamin d drops at DS 2-week appt.

  • Went to the pedi at 4 days old and she gave them to us too. 1ML a day is the dose she gave us.

  • Yup, we give it to her before her last nighttime feeding
  • Yep I was told to with both kiddos unt they start solids or we switch to formula. It's because we don't have it in our breast milk and it is hard to get vitamin D in general. But it is added to formula and in foods and cows milk

  • I give them and did for DD until she started solids.

I don't give vitamin D drops because I take my kids outside. You get vitamin D from the sun, so why pay for drops?

This. Especially because when DD1 was an infant we lived in sunny Arizona!

  • My ped said to start them because we live in Seattle, so we won't see any sun until July 5th! She said it's the only vitamin missing from breastmilk.
  • My pedi didn't recommend using them this time or when I was BFing DS. Wonder why some doctors recommend it while others don't even mention it.

  • My doc also recommended it today for my 2 week old LO I wish it wasn't so cold so we cold just go outside for 30 min each day. Hopefully spring will be here soon!

  • Definitely recommended in Canada.
I've been told to give vitamin D to all 3 kids. (12 yo, 1 to, NB)

I'd imagine part of the reason some docs don't tell some BFing moms to give it, is because of where they live/climate.

If you live in a normally 'sunny all the time' sorta spot, where its warm, and you'd generally expect to be outside frequently,...then I could see not being told to give them.

But up north here, where we still have snow on the ground and negative temperatures, well, I for one will not be sun tanning anytime soon, and therefore will be giving the drops.

  • Still have an inside baby, but this is an interesting topic - especially given that I believe it's nearly impossible for adults to OD on vitamin D, and it has so many known benefits (from mental health to proper cell function),

Still, if it's not in our breast milk naturally, it begs the question of why - esp from an evolutionary perspective. One would think if it were crucial for babies, we'd have evolved to provide it.

Off to research, but would love to hear thoughts from anyone strongly for/against supplementing.

  • I was very surprise when my ped recommended vitamin supplements. He actually recommended tri-vi-sol which has vit a, c, and d. I researched this a bit bc I'm in school for child development and never heard about this before.

I was confused- I thought breast milk was supposed to provide all needed nutrients. Breast milk only provides a small amount of vit d and the rest can be obtained through sunlight. Guess what? It's cold and not sunny here yet! I opted to go with baby d drops- they contain 400 iui as recommended by aap in one colorless drop. Super easy to give! The tri-vi-sol is such a huge dose b/c it's full of sugar, colorings, and preservatives. All things I don't want for my baby's belly.

Once it's nice out, I won't worry as much about the drops bc we'll be outside a lot.

Fellow AZ gal here :) I would personally have never been recommended giving DS the vitamin D drops because all we get here is sun!  I don't know how you spend the summer but we spend a lot of time out in the sun playing in water to keep cool. Plenty of opportunity for vitamin D.

Yeah I thought it was weird, especially since we've already been spending time in the sun since she was born! (I mean, we have to since I have a rambunctious toddler that needs to run around).

I've already got the drops though. Is it possible to get too much vit D? (Drops and being in the sun)

  • OK, thanks! And @DisneyAddict1 , I'm sure I've already asked you this several times, but my memory sucks. Where in AZ do you live again?
