<--- Not understanding how women go through an entire pregnancy and not understand that 1. people on these boards are not Drs and can't diagnose what you have. 2. If you think they may be contractions (and seriously at 40wks I would think that's something you would look out for!) not think of calling their Dr. 3. How have you gone through prenatal visits (assuming you have, hopefully) and gotten this far and not had the discussion with you OB about what to look out for and when to call. 4. "tightening of stomach. Hard to walk and talk whne it happens. Anyone have these pains and I think it may be contractions." ...this... Do you not know what a contraction is? TIME THEM! Your OB should have told you how to do this.
No one is gonna diagnose you. If you're in doubt PLEASE call your OB! We can't magically see what is going on with you through a computer and even if we could you have an OB for a reason. Use them.

Well then, let's turn this thread into something useful. Can contractions really feel like sharp pains in the vag? Ftm here and just never heard it described that way.

Contractions can feel totally different for every person. If the baby is pressing down during a contraction and hitting a nerve or something it could certainly feel that way.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!

I'm a FTM, so I honestly don't know what a real contraction feels like. Yes that sounds more like RLP or something like that... But what I was getting at wasn't the sharp pain in the vag it was everything else. You feel tightening in your belly? Yes, could most definitely be a contractions. Heck even if the pain in the vag comes and goes and follows that same guidelines that your OB would give you for timing... then I'd still call! If I had a different kind of pain that most other people don't feel, but can be timed like a contraction, then hell yeah I'm calling the OB!! Everyone feels pain differently. Every woman has different experiences with pregnancy. If you have a question call the OB.

Could be contractions. Start timing and see what happens or just call your OB. We have no way of knowing.
If you're 40 weeks along, though, hasn't your doctor been asking you at your appointments whether you've felt any contractions? Wouldn't that have been a good opportunity to ask what they would feel like if you didn't know?

I cannot remember exactly how my contractions felt either, but I do remember that I just knew that's what it was. I want to say they were mostly down low and in my back, where BH are definitely more of an all over tightening in the front. I get the sharp pains in my vag too, I always thought it was baby moving down low, maybe against my cervix.
I don't think I honestly ever felt sharp stabbing pains in my vagina when having a contraction. I had back labor with my first so I dismissed those as contractions. WIth my second, it felt like really bad menstrual cramps that went all around my front and back. But I suppose it depends on where the baby is located and if the head/foot/etc is pusing down in the birth canal?

My first labor was all induced and weird (at least with pitocin, they felt like waves of terrible period cramps mixed with awful, sharp gas pain) , but I've been getting 'lightening crotch' this time starting at about 38.5 weeks, which is a sharp, double over pain right through the vag, but it passes quickly, too. BH are usually a tightening of the stomach/uterus without much pain, at least for me. Just today I started having what I think are 'real' contractions - a more painful tightening, a little lower down and leading to more crampy feelings. I'm waiting to see if they become consistant and then I'll start timing them.
If you are 40 weeks, you should call your OB/MW and at least talk it through.
