Trouble TTC

Confused (and upset) after HSG test

I just had the HSG test. The doctor told me that no dye is go through my right tube, but my left one is very clear. So, it could be that the right one is blocked, or, my left one is too clear so all the dye is going that way. WHAT?! so which case is it? after spending several hours at the doc's office, 200 dollars, and all that pain, she is telling me that it could be blocked or it could not be? She asked me to go again in 2 days for a procedure to try to clear the right tube (they will push CO2 gas into the cervix or something like that). But honestly I thought HSG could be a bit more conclusive?

Re: Confused (and upset) after HSG test

  • Thank you Naria. I'm not sure if the doctor is trying to make me feel better, by giving me another possibility, but she was just so confusing and would not give me a clearer answer.

By the way, is it harder to conceive on the cycle after HSG? It's been 2 hours since I did the procedure and I am bleeding quite heavily. I'm just wondering if it will effect my chances this month.

  • Sorry you had a rough day! The way I understand it, it's actually easier to get pregnant after an HSG because it sort of flushes out your tubes, cleaning out anything that shouldn't be there. Considering your results, I'm not sure how much the HSG will help, but I don't think it will hurt. Good luck with your upcoming procedure!

  • Thanks Marsha. Yeah in my case I don't think HSG will help clear the tube. On top of that, it looks like I only have 1 medium sized follie so far, and of course, on the blocked side! Lucky me!

  • I also have an "inconclusive" tube with the other one being open.  I'm having a Lap done on the 28th to check to see for sure if the one tube is blocked or if it was a spasm during the HSG.  Sorry you're having a rough day!  I also had heard it was easier to get pregnant the cycle after your HSG.

  • Sry your HSG didn't go so well. Hope your next procedure is much better, Unfortunately, my HSG showed both tubes blocked. But my RE did say that my right tube looked much healthier than my left. I go back for an appt April 16 to discuss and schedule Lap surgery. Keep us updated! Hugs and prayers for you!
  • Huh.  I have never heard of a tube being too clear either.  You'd think that if it was open at all the dye would flow through it regardless of whether the other tube is clear or not.  Fingers crossed your next one is more conclusive and the RE can give you more information.  Fingers and toes crossed that it ends up clearing your right tube!

  • Thank you all so much for the encouragement! In a way I am relieved, it sort of gives an explanation why we were having trouble TTC all this time. If this is the cause, then at least now we know what to do. Off to google lap surgery and see if it's something I want to pursue.....

  • Hi everyone just want to give you an update: I went to the doctor's again and this time, he gave me the insufflation test. First I received a shot which they said will help me relax and stop the tubal spasm. Then he pumped CO2 into the cervix, and by listening to the sound he can identify how bad the blockage is. This procedure is also said to help clear minor blockage. He said that my right one is slightly more blocked than the left one, which is very clear. But air did go through the right so it's not completely blocked. He suggested we try this cycle, and if unsuccessful he will put me on clomid to make sure I will ovulate on the left side.
