Non-talkers check in

Are we still the only ones not talking? Not anywhere hear sentences or songs here. Anyone else? How are things going? DS will say a few words but nothing significant. DS started school about 1 month ago and is just starting to participate and adjust so we are hoping for improvement soon. Other then that nothing new with his speech in the last several months.

Re: Non-talkers check in

  • DD understands 90% of what I say and can say a few words. Her speech sorta sounds like a bunch of ya ba da ee and stuff all mushed together. It sounds like shes trying to say sentences but I just cannot understand. If she wants something she will bring it to me or bring me to it. She knows sign language for "eat" and "More", but I have heard her say "ma" which i think means more, because when she wants me it is a straight "mama". She mimics things constantly and will watch my mouth when I talk. Hopefully she will have a language explosion in a few months.

  • Lily has been picking up a few more words here and there but is still lagging in speech.  I'm not worried but I am anxiously waiting for her word explosion to hit so I don't have to be focusing on this issue so much! I got baby, go, cracker, and yellow all in one shopping trip this morning and it felt huge!

  • Avery is picking up new words, but we are no where near sentences. She sings songs, but we have no clue what she's saying, lol. Hopefully she'll continue picking up words and start putting them together soon.

  • We are no where near sentences.  There are only a few words Zachary says with any regularity unprompted (ball, up, help, door, and maybe a few more).  He can do a few animal sounds and knows the signs for eat, milk, more, and all done.  He knows words for things (he can point stuff out in a book easily) he just doesn't say them regularly yet (like he can say bowl, and will point out a bowl in a book, but he doesn't say it when he has one in front of him without being prompted).

  • still no words here either.  He says mamma.. and that's it .  Lots of sounds, but no words.  No mimicking either.
He understands everything and excels in all other skills... but no talking.
    Very frustrating.

  • Dmitri only says a few words but I doubt that anyone but me or DH would understand anything but bubble. He's got about 10 "words" he uses.

  • I am so glad to hear this and glad I am not the only one! E is in Speech Therapy but hasn't spoken any new words or sentences. The worker said the same thing, they aren't going to start being concerned until age 2. Thanks for the reassurance!

  • Right there with you guys. During the 18 month check up visit my Ped said at that age it's average for kids to say 4-10 words. I'm not sure if you're familiar with this but passing it along if it puts anyone at ease. If you give a directive and they carry it out (for example I tell her "go get a book" and she brings it back) then they are developing on schedule. I'm finding now that repetitious shows really help. We started watching Little Einsteins and they always say "pat, pat, pat" to make noises, within a week she was saying 'pat'. Food for thought.
