1st Trimester

First time mom with first trimester worries and questionable symptoms

First time pregnancy here, so I am reaching out with some concerns for any and all feedback. I am also going to assume that being preganant, no matter which one it is, does not happen without the same nervousness that I feel on pretty much a daily basis right now. I am about 5 weeks pregnant and have been spotting brown while using the restroom for about 5 days now. Yesterday included a small brownish clot with a bit more of a red color. I realize the good thing is that it isn't bright red but I wish it wasn't happening at all. Have this dread that it is the start of a miscarriage. The doc says an ultrasound won't tell anything about the pregnancy until week 6 and the most they could do is measure blood hcg levels at this point. The worst part about this is just the waiting--my first official appt with the doc was not supposed to be until April 10th--ugh! I am gonna give it a few days and see if anything either stops or gets worse...but I welcome any feedback or advice from people that have had similar experiences or have just been around this block a couple of times. Praying for a good outcome!

  • I'm a first time pregnancy too. I am at 10 weeks and had the same thing happen as you. I had to wait until that first ultrasound and it was so frustrating to know nothing until then. My spotting and occasional clotting has not gone away but all of my ultrasounds have been good. Try to stay positive. Trust me I know it's hard to. If it gets worse or you feel any pain just call your doctor. That's what they are there for. Best of luck.

  • Spotting like that especially in the beginning of your pregnancy is totally normal. I didn't have anything like that with my first, but with my second (currently) I had that for a few weeks. Unless there are painful cramps, and not just tolerable ones because you'll get those as your uterus expands or bright red blood you're 100% fine and it isn't a sign of anything bad. When people say look for bright red that's really true. Anything ranging from brown to somewhat pink is normal and cramping will happen throughout the first trimester especially. Try to not stress and just relax. The wait before the first appointment is the worst but you'll get there!
  • Its hard not to worry.  But from what Ive read its not uncommon to have some slight spotting , especially brown during your pregnancy, especially at the point you are at now.

  • Spotting happens. It does not always mean miscarriage. Relax & do your best to be patient. Hang in there.

  • I spotted or bled through my whole pregnancy with my ds.  Like the pps said, it is very common to spot this early in pregnancy.  I do agree with having them go ahead and do the hCG levels, so you can have some peace of mind.
