Where did you get rid of your sharps?

I have three sharps containers full of needles and need to dispose of them.

Thanks!

Re: Where did you get rid of your sharps?

  • My RE's office disposed them for me.
  • Loading the player...
  • I couldnt find anywhere that would take them, so I took them all and put them into an empty laundry detergent bottle and filled it with some bleach to kill the germs and then duct taped it closed and threw it in the trash. I also duct taped the empty sharps container and threw that away. That was actually suggested to me by my RE office since they knew no one would take it.
  • I dumped mine in the trash (according to my states regulations)... which I was not happy about doing but my RE will not dispose of patients sharps (because they pay by weight to have the stuff incinerated and it would cost them lots more than they already pay).

If your RE won't take them then check here for proper disposal instrusctions in your state:

  • My RE's office told me I could throw them out in regular trash as long as they were in the container (and they wouldn't take them for me).

  • Okay, here is what I'm supposed to do:

Texas:  Texas has not published information to guide individuals in safely disposing of syringes used at home. However, the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission and the Texas Department of Health recommend using guidance contained in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s former needle disposal recommendations which include the following:
? Place needles and syringes in a hard plastic or metal container with a screw-on cap or tightly secured lid.
? Reinforce the lid of the container with heavy-duty tape.
? Label the container ?Not for Recycling.?
    The guidance includes these warnings:
? Do not place the container with materials to be recycled.
? Do not use containers made of glass or clear plastic.
? Keep these containers out of the reach of children and pets.

I guess I just do like the pp said and use a empty bleach bottle and put it in the trash?  It just sounds wrong for some reason.

  • Our local hospital takes them.  I also heard some people had luck with local ambulance companies.

  • I took mine to my OB and asked them to put it in with their sharps.

  • It was a pain in the ass!!!!

The RE wouldn't take them, the local hospital wouldn't take them, the OB wouldn't take them, the pharmacy wouldn't take them, the police dept wouldn't take them either.

I had to find a special fire department that did.

I would have put them in the trash after all the running around I did -- I just didn't feel good about it.

It makes me feel very sorry for diabetics that have to deal with needles every day and how they dispose of their sharps. Ugh!

  • My RE took them from me while I was going there.  I'm not sure what I will do with my current container when it is full.  I ordered a big one online, a 2 gallon one.  I suppose I should ask my OB if they take them.  If not then I guess I'll have to figure out what to do.
  • I don't know where I will dispose of them when the time comes.  But for now and until I am done with my Lovenox, I will be saving each and every single one of them.  Call me a weirdo...LOL, but I would like to take a pic of the whole bunch gathered so that when my child is a snot, I can show them how hard I worked to keep them. J/K...but I do have them all saved for lack of better idea.
  • Thanks for posing this question. Now I will be going to my local hospital tomorrow before these needles stay for life in my closet!
