Spotting 13 weeks?

Hi, lurker here.  I am 13 weeks, 1 day, and spotted last night.  Called the dr, said as long as I don't cramp and continue then to call in the morning to the office and just let them know.  It stopped/turned brownish like the end of a period and never cramped so called in the am and nurse said just pelvic rest for 48 hours and to call if it happened again.  I *think* it happened again tonight- but not as bright red but not quite brown either.  But also not as much as last night.  No cramping.  So I haven't called, but probably will.  I can't really afford to go to an urgent care so would probably go to my drs office tomorrow to get an ultrasound/hear the heart beat.  Right now I'm just super anxious and was wondering if anyone has had any spotting at 13 weeks or earlier and it has been ok.  Just trying to take my mind off things and it doesn't help that I just announced yesterday on FB, ugh.  Also, heard the heartbeat at 8 and 12 weeks (which was a week ago).

  • Im sorry that you're having to go through this! I'd definitely follow up with your OB but no cramping is a good sign. Have you been exercising, sex, etc? I've heard of spotting afterward...

  • This is exactly what I went through, but at 9-10 weeks. My doctors office said as long as there was no cramping they were not concerned, since they previously heard the heartbeat and had a good ultrasound. I had a reg appointment at 11 weeks and all was fine. I really don't think you have to worry since there is no cramping, but I would call your office in the morning just to make sure. Fingers crossed!

With my first I light spotted brown at 13 weeks and they told me it happens to a lot bc the baby buries itself farther in the lining around this week. Maybe the placenta? I'm not sure I remember correctly but she had a valid reason

Def keep your OB posted though because everyone is different
  • I had very heavy bleeding last week and had to go to the ER. Turns out I just have an implantation bleed where part of my placenta meets my uterus (i think). They said exactly what you did, if there isn't cramping and you aren't soaking though multiple pads an hour then there isn't cause for concern. I'm still having spotting but baby is healthy and kicking. Basically spotting can happen for any reason and is not necesarily anything to worry about.

  • I had spotting at 10 weeks and then again two days ago- around 13 weeks. The first time I called and they had me come in for an ultrasound. Everything was fine. This time I actually had an appt the next day (yesterday).

Heartbeat was strong & my dr just said that sometimes blood gets stuck between the uterus and placenta and will either be absorbed or shed out in small or larger amounts. Definitely made me feel much better!
  • I had spotting around 10.5 weeks, it lasted about a day and was very light pink.  It was never a ton, but it was definitely visible.  I called the nurse line at my OB / midwife office and they brought me in later that afternoon to check for heartbeat.  We were able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler, which was a huge relief.  Spotting stopped the next day and I haven't had it since.  Did you recently have sex?  They think that is what caused my spotting.

  • This has not happened to me but both of my sisters had blood clots and were told that because it was brown, it was old blood. They were told to rest as often as possible and had a little extra monitoring but both were fine in the end.

Follow up with your OB just to be sure.

I've had spotting on and off this whole pregnancy.  Turns out I have a sensitive cervix so if I'm more active than usual one day I tend to spot.  Were you more active than usual before you started spotting?  Chances are you and baby are fine but of course it's scary to see any spotting during pregnancy.  Good luck at your doctor's appt!

  • I had some spotting around 5 weeks. I found out I had low progesterone (which shouldn't be an issue at 13 weeks) and went on a supplement. Everything has gone well since.

I agree with PP that since there is no cramping and it's brown now, everything is likely fine. However, I'd still follow up with the doctor for peace of mind.

  • Do not google it's the devil! I spotted around 10 weeks and like the other ladies said no stressing unless there is cramping and bright red new blood soaking through a pad an hour or so....hard to relax but try. Also I spotted for like 5 days so it may continue for a bit.
