Breastfeeding

BF and Mirena

Anyone have experience breastfeeding with Mirena in? Did it affect your supply? I'm expecting DS #2 and plan for him to be my last. From what I've read, BC that does not contain estrogen is not as problematic, but for some women can slow production, so I was hoping to hear from some women with actual experience. For DS #1, we knew we wanted another fairly soon, so we just used condoms in the interim. I'm concerned about stronger cramps and bleeding with the hormone-free IUD, otherwise I'd just do that.

Re: BF and Mirena

  • I have had mirena twice and both times while breastfeeding. My first one I had absolutely no trouble with. My period never came back and supply was great. This time the mirena jump started my period. I have a little bit of spotting for a couple days each month and my supply takes a small hit during that time. After my period ends my supply goes right back to normal.

  • I've had Mirena for almost 4 weeks now and have had no dip in supply at all. I have been spotting though for weeks :/
  • I have had the Mirena for almost a year, and I have not had any problem with my milk. I produced a huge amount when my son was first born. I had to pump multiple times a day. My supply did take a hit when I went back to work. I had to pump once through the day, but it wasn't related to Mirena. My only complaint with Mirena was the horrible insertion experience. I hope the removal isn't that bad.
  • Also consider nexplanon. I has it after ds1 and loved it. I was a little worried sbout iud insertion. No affect on supply. And never got my period until I had it removed when ds1 was 14 months. I'm getting it again this week!

  • Mirena inserted at 8 weeks post partum, I don't think it had an effect on my supply. I had oversupply when it was inserted, however I also returned to work and took up exercising at the same time so any drop in supply could be attributed to those as well. In anycase, almost 2 years later, not pregnant (yay!) and still nursing LO 1-2 times a day.
  • I've had Mirena since 9 weeks PP, no supply impact at all.  I had an oversupply up until a few weeks ago.

  • I think Mirena did have an effect on my supply. I love it for birth control, but I think I will wait until my next child is closer to 1 yo before I have it inserted next time.

I have never had an issue with nursing directly, but I struggled for every ounce when I went back to work (only 3 days/week).

I started with a big oversupply (with direct breast feeding and with the pump), but then barely eked through each day. I fed on-demand from day one, co-slept (most of the time) and took herbs and drank tea and water like crazy, but I still had to work and work for my milk.

I can't say for sure, obviously, because going back to work (@ 12 weeks) and getting my period (@ 13 weeks) also played a role, for sure, but I think the Mirena (@ 6 weeks) was not the best choice for my breastfeeding role.

In the end, I've made my goal of one year and my DD is still going strong, which I love.
