This might be my Monday blues and hormonal grumpiness talking but they are getting paid to do their job! I guess I don't understand why a thankyou in the form of food or a gift is necessary for them performing the requirements of their job?
If I had a fantastic nurse who went above and beyond I would likely mention this to a supervisor afterwards so they could get some recognition, as I would any coworker or outstanding employee.
Because so many nurses (and other medical staff) go above and beyond their duties to help their patients. When DS was born one of my nurses stayed an hour past her 12-hour shift two times just to sit with me until my husband was able to get back to my room. Another one went down to the NICU for me on her lunch break to take pictures of DS for me. Being a nurse can be a really thankless job, and while I don't think you have to bring something, I do think it's silly to assume they only do what's required of them. It's probably a nice change for them to hear a "thank you" once in a while.
I have been thinking for months that if like to bake something for my ob's office staff/nurses the next time I go in as a little thank you. They've been really great and who doesn't like delicious unexpected treats when they're at work?
I'm not much on baking things but I think that I am going to go to a bakery and get some cookies. Or if I go into labor and don't have time I will send my mom after some!
Idk.. We tip waitresses.. Baristas... And now nurses too? And what about the doctors? Your OB or Midwife? They have been with you for 9-10months so they should get something too right? And then throw teachers into the mix.. And hairstylists... Bartenders... Grocery baggers.. What about Cops? Firefighters? EMTs? I mean we might as well start paying thanks to everyone for every job that they do yeah??
That being said.. I wont bring anything with me, but if I happen to feel that they need a bigger thanks then verbally, I can have a friend run out and get something to spread the love.

I see what you mean. I feel it kind of assures that you get taken care of. I know they have a job and standards to follow but it would be nice to get that little extra in a time like this.

I think that part is kind of the point. Obviously you don't have to do anything. But considering I know many people who do the professions you listed, and all of them rarely even get "thank-you's" for their hard work, it's hard to keep it up. It's nice to have positive recognition and affirmation, whether it is in the form of a thank you note, box of donuts or something more extravagant.
Yup exactly. You don't have to but it's nice to get recognition every once in a while. I don't think anyone said you had to bring them something I think they asked if you were going to bring them something. My husband is a firefighter/paramedic and he goes to work and risk his life does he ask for or expect a thank you NOPE is it nice when someone does YES.

Why not? You can say thank you in lots of ways. Why would saying thank you to a firefighter or grocery bagger be so bad?
Haha sorry guys. My wording was SOOO bad. I verbally say thank you ALLLL the time!! I sincerely appreciate all the work people do!!
I guess I just get a little bitter when people start expecting tips or gifts for their work. (Like servers) it makes me SO mad when a waiter gets pissed they didn't get a tip. I am a hairstylist and never expect a tip for a job I chose to do. My satisfaction is being able to do what I love and making people happy. Not for a tip.
Like I said, I will probably end up getting them something, thats just the kind of person I am haha. Its just an opinion I have about the situation.. I mean, we might as well tip everyone who works any job instead of picking and choosing

I have no idea how the hairstylist industry works but I know that when I was a server and someone didn't tip it meant that it cost me out of my own pocket since I still had to tip out, so yup I would be pissed about it. Our tip out to the bartenders, hosts, bussers and cooks was 4.5% of our sales and not based on our tips at all. Also servers are paid such a little amount that they need tips to survive or at least around here they do. So just a little word of wisdom maybe don't judge an industry unless you have worked in it.
I think bringing a small gift such as a box of donuts to the nurses isn't exactly a tip but just a kind gesture and a nice way of saying thank you.

I definitely think nurses have a thankless job! I understand the women that can't imagine adding another thing on their "to do" list right before birth, but if you're a "small gesture" person, I think doing something like this is really wonderful, even if it isn't necessary!
So you all wouldn't suggest healthy food? I was thinking of asking my mom to run out and get a fruit tray because I figured most nurses would be sick of cookies. That seems like a bad idea though?

A fruit tray would prob be very appreciated. As a nurse ( and a pregnant one) I am never sick of cookies. A fruit tray sounds like a great idea.
Speaking of the expecting tips thing. I personally never expect anything from my patients or family, it is my job. That said, sometimes more than any food, a sincere thank you and hug mean the world. As a profession we see so much, and deal with it all, but on especially emotional days, it is beyond nice to hear verbal recognition.

Um, yeah you are judging. Servers and bartenders make $2.13 an hour, that means they don't get a paycheck. Servers get paid IN tips. Are saying that you believe that servers shouldn't get paid?!? If you hate tipping so much here's a tip for you: Don't go out to eat. Stay home and cook or get fast food. When people don't tip not only does the server not get paid, but they have to PAY to wait on you. (As PP said a lot of places you tip out 5% of SALES not tips) How would you feel if you spent an 2 hours foiling, washing and cutting someone's hair and not only did you not get paid, but they took money out of your tip jar?!? Verbal tips don't pay the rent or put food in people's mouths. Especially if your server is a single mother.
I did an edible arrangement and chocolate covered strawberries. They LOOOVED it. I ordered it when I was at the hospital. Since I was two weeks late I couldn't bake or anything like that. This worked out perfect. It was just a nice way of thanking them for the safe delivery of my baby and for keeping me safe and comfortable during labor.
I was already thinking about doing something before @wtfisup posted this. Thanks for posting by the way. No one is saying anyone has to do this, but I know a few nurses who are so busy during the day they don't even have time to break for lunch let alone get a snack in during a 12 hour shift plus. Having snacks around I'm sure would be much appreciated. Especially if you are one of those women who are going to be bugging them every five minutes (you know who you are). Yes nursing is their job. Yes they probably do it because they enjoy it. But they have sucky days too and having some food or snacks delivered to them could just change that sucky day for them. Thanks for all the different ideas though. I think I'll give MIL some money ahead of time and have her bring bagels in the morning along with a fruit tray.

I'm just giving you an internet high five. Although it's not your problem that I haven't sat down and had an uninterrupted 30 min lunch break in months, it's nice to know that some people realize that. Yesterday I just sat down, got my lunch out of the microwave & took my first bite when my patient called & needed me to empty her bedpan. Got up, did that, heated up my food again. Got a call from another pt that she thought her water broke. Got up went & tested her, reassured her all was well, came back to eat. Not 2 seconds after sitting down for "lunch" the secretary calls & says Dr. So & So is here and has a question for you. Anyway, all I'm saying is that nothing is expected from any patient and is definitely not my patients' direct fault that I don't have time to pee or eat but a sincere "Thank you so much for taking care of me today" means so so much to us. It makes eating cold leftovers over the span of 2 hours and not peeing so worth it.

Regardless of what the topic is YOU are the one who brought up servers. You can't lump them in with people who get paid a salary or get paid hourly, because they don't. They don't get tipped, they don't get paid. I was a server for 10 years so your comment pissed me off. You're damn right I'm gonna say something.
It makes you "SO mad when a waiter gets pissed they didn't get a tip." I assumed (silly me) that you didn't understand the way the service industry works so I was trying to give you some insight. Are you retracting your statement now??

I have nothing further to say, I just keep repeating myself. Take what I said as you will. But its not meant to come across how you assume it to be. Have a nice day.
I don't think you need to give nurses a gift (or your wedding planner, etc) you are already paying them and its their job! I never got gifts at my job! BUT God forbid my little man had to be in NICU etc and people really went above and beyond for him then yes, I would give a small treat such as a gift card etc. At the end of the day it's their job and they get paid pretty good for it. Now if you want special treatment you could " bribe" your nurses w gifts I suppose... Lol
I'm willing to say that not all paid jobs are equal. I love my job, but it's cushy. I work at a desk. When I want to, I go work from home or a coffee shop. No one cares how long my lunch break is. I can go eat anywhere within driving distance and not be interrupted. I do not have to be on my feet, care for anyone, etc. Some days I don't even interact with anyone.
I really like gifts and treats, but I totally don't deserve one. If at any point in my day I want to make a run to Whole Foods or Starbucks, I can. It's really not the same for folks working 12 hour shifts with no option to leave and pick up lunch.
I still don't get why people think bringing snacks or something will bribe me into taking better care of you. Seriously, that's a bit insulting to think that I'd bump someone to the top of my priority list simply because they brought me a treat instead of making my priority list based on actual medical necessity.
As a nurse it is nice to have someone say thank you. But nurses love chocolate, sweets or anything that is not a cracker, jello or Popsicle. Meaning we don't always get to go eat when we are hungry unless its something we already have on the floor that we sneak. Something I'm going to do that is really easy. Grab a bag or two of mini candy bars. Put it in my room and a sign saying thank you and have a treat. Something like that. Easy to have in my bag already. Anything left over can go to the floor staff.
Honestly. I've gone to check on someone else's patient who I heard had candy. Just to say. " need anything?"
It's not expected but I am giving birth at the hospital I work for so I want to have them remember me as the nice lady who brought candy not... Ohh she is a nurse, great I got stuck with the nurse. Fellow nurses know what I mean. All while I'm screaming my head off to get this baby out!!
Chocolate can make a patient a bit more bearable. Seriously though. It does.
We also are not allowed to take anything of value. Like gift cards money or tickets to a game. That's why food is often used.

Seriously, that's a bit insulting to think that I'd bump someone to the top of my priority list simply because they brought me a treat instead of making my priority list based on actual medical necessity.
Dude, seriously! If you're gonna try and bribe me, it better be with something a bit better than baked goods. Hahaha j/k I don't understand that either. When you give someone a gift, there shouldn't be an ulterior motive. A gift is a gift.
When I was teaching in the university, I had a student straight up ask, "How much money would it take for me to get an A? $500? $1,000?"
But I will say my favorite perfume was from a student, though they gave it to me months after the course ended and the grade was submitted. Arabic perfume is where it's at -- so much better than our stuff.
I probably would if I were stuck in the hospital for a long time or had connected with a certain nurse, but in the 4 days I was in the hospital last time, the nurses switched shifts every 12 hours. Out of 8 "shifts" I was there, I had a total of 6 nurses. I had 4 great nurses, 1 really exceptionally wonderful one, and one mean old lady that I couldn't get away from fast enough and made me cry. If anything, I would have gotten a little something extra for the exceptional one, but it really didn't occur to me.
I'm confused at the attitude in some posts for sure.
Yeah. Either give a gift or dont. It wont affect you if someone else does or doesnt. Unless curls really WAS corrupt and totes kicked people out of rooms for doughnuts.
I'm calling it now. The tudes are the ones who will be requiring constant attention of their nurses, so much so that they won't be able to eat. I feel sorry already for their nurses. The tudes kinda want to make me go out of my way to do something extra special for my nurses to make up for all those who don't. If nothing else, I'm going to give them something for having to get all up in my bloody business during labor and recovery. Their job or not, that's just GROSS. Besides, I'm the type of person who likes to make people happy.

I don't understand how someone can actually use servers as examples of how we shouldn't be obligated to tip everyone. Really?
I don't get the attitude in these posts, either. It's just a conversation about nice gestures. The horror!

I just threw it out there because it is the number one service that gets tips, so it was the best example I could think of.
I had no attitude when saying so.. It was simply just an example (apparently a bad one). Everyone took it way to seriously then it was supposed to come across.

I take it seriously because my husband works in the service industry, at a restaurant, with a shitload of servers, and his income is also based off of tips. So, when people say things like they don't deserve tips, it insults my husband and how hard he and the staff work. Do you suggest they do it for free?

If you hate tipping so much here's a tip for you: Don't go out to eat. Stay home and cook or get fast food. When people don't tip not only does the server not get paid, but they have to PAY to wait on you. (As PP said a lot of places you tip out 5% of SALES not tips) How would you feel if you spent an 2 hours foiling, washing and cutting someone's hair and not only did you not get paid, but they took money out of your tip jar?!? Verbal tips don't pay the rent or put food in people's mouths. Especially if your server is a single mother.
You don't know me. Don't tell me what I am or am not doing. I am NOT judging, and I NEVER said I had a problem tipping, in fact I said I ALWAYS tip and I ALWAYS tip 20% of my bill. What I said has little to do with servers anyways, it was just an example. The topic on discussion is nurses.
It's kind of hard to misinterpret when it's right there in the quote box:

Have a nice day.О Привязать! Z!

I just threw it out there because it is the number one service that gets tips, so it was the best example I could think of.
I had no attitude when saying so.. It was simply just an example (apparently a bad one). Everyone took it way to seriously then it was supposed to come across.
What can I say... My bad!
I take it seriously because my husband works in the service industry, at a restaurant, with a shitload of servers, and his income is also based off of tips. So, when people say things like they don't deserve tips, it insults my husband and how hard he and the staff work. Do you suggest they do it for free?

I never said they didn't deserve tips.
And like I have said before, I ALWAYS tip..
It was a bad example on my part. Sorry.
