4 month old pulling off breast/not content

My 4 month old started pulling off my left breast without emptying it and she cries so I know she is not full. She does this all the time after about 6 min on it. I have no idea what is up or what to do. I m trying to pump after feeding on that side but it's not always possible for me to do that.

  • This is a typical developmental (awareness of surroundings$ milestone. Try feeding in a quiet, dark place or using a cover. You could also try spreading sessions out by 30 minutes. Maybe your LO isn't hungry yet and just grazing!

Hopefully it will get better, but my LO still does it at 6 months occasionally.

  • Thanks! I hope this is temporary! She definitely is hungry though because she eats from the other breast.
  • I would try switching back-and-forth. You could feed right then left then right. Your LO may be upset the milk isn't coming at whatever pace they like. If you think it's a supply issue, keep track of diapers (6-8 wet or dirty ones) or you could ask your pediatrician to do a weighted feed (weigh, feed, then weigh again). My pedi didn't know how to bill so I had to see a PA along with the visit. Just remember, a weighed feed is approximately what LO gets each time. It changes throughout the day. Good luck!
