stm +, diaper genie, yay or nay?

Ok so I've heard mixed reviews on needing a Diaper Genie or not? We do live in a smaller place but we also have daily trash service we can bring things to a dumpster daily if we like.

We had the diaper champ thing with DD, but I didn't really like it.  (We chose the diaper champ because I've heard the cost of replacement bags for the diaper genie is annoying.)

It always smelled funny and required a lot of cleaning.  It didn't hold a whole lot of diapers either (especially in the beginning when you're going through a ton of diapers!).  We just ended up throwing the stinky diapers directly in the outside garbage (or in the garage in a plastic bag for the next person who went out to throw in the garbage if I was lazy and it was night time), and wet diapers went in the normal trash.

  • I say yay. Still use ours with DD (2+ years later). Don't really get the hate behind them, never had reason to complain about it.

  • As for cost? $18-20 for a box of three refills of bags, each refill lasting a month (longer as they get older/need fewer changes) isn't that big of a deal IMO.

  • Absolutely get one. Dumpster trips get old, and when you have to do one every day? Forget about it!

We mostly cloth, but when we do use disposables, I find that the little Arm and Hammer scented baggies are sufficient to deal with the smell. I just use them on poop diapers and put them in the regular trash.

For our sealed cloth diaper bin (a locking trash can), I found that putting a refrigerator box of baking soda in the bottom (under the wet bag) accomplishes the same thing. Costs me maybe $3/month. Don't know how it would work with disposables.

  • I use cloth too... but to be honest, it's gonna sound weird... but leaving the top off of the pail actually helps to keep the smell down.  The air circulated and didn't get that funky smell.  Poopy diapers didn't smell until DD started solids, and now we just spray them when she poops.

I haven't used disposables since DD was about 3 months old... so I don't know how well it would work with disposables...

  • My diaper champ really smelled by the time DS was about a year...but it was very convenient.  This time I chose the Ubbi (stainless steel and looks cute but is expensive).  I chose it cause supposedly the stainless steel won't absorb smells as much and I can still use regular garbage bags.  I'm hoping to maybe keep it as a regular trash can for a bit.

This worked for us until we hit the dreaded ammonia pee stage. Now I have to keep the pail closed and deodorized or I have to wash every day. :/ Blergh. He actually bleached one of his overnight diapers into a tiedye pattern with the level of ammonia recently.

We soak overnight diapers in the sink with some BacOut.  That seems to keep the ammonia away.

  • We received one for our shower 7 years ago. I never really liked it. It filled up too fast and always smelled funny. We just put the poopy diapers in a small plastic bag before throwing them in the trash. Our I door trash can is smaller so we take trash out everyday anyways.
  • I say yay. We also use the generic refills.

This. We used it for a long time with DS, and we never had any odor issues.

  • YES! I know it's not a perfect system, but it's better than other stuff I've seen. We use diaper genie elite. Diaper dekor didn't work well for us. It smelled a lot.

  • I just hang a plastic grocery bag in our garage and throw diapers in there. At the end of the day I put it in the trash. If it is a really stinky diaper it gets it's own bag right away:). I have a diaper genie but once they start solids I thought it would smell.
  • YAY!  We love our diaper genie!  We have daily trash valet (they come to our doorstep to pick up the trash) and we still used it and loved it!  We used it until DS was potty trained.  We'll definitely be using it again this time.  Kept all the smells away.  My sis has twins and she got the same one and loves it as well.  Go with the Diaper Genie Elite if you decide to get one.

  • I used a diaper genie with DS and will again for this little one.  It's a yay for me, I liked it and never had any problems.  Works well in hiding the odors.

  • Nay. A garbage can with a lid works fine for pee diapers. A dumpster or outside garbage can works great for poopy diapers. No need for a special place to put your kid's waste.

  • I HATED our Diaper Genie. Although we might have gotten a defective one, it was always SUPER hard to shut the lid and made a weird loud cranking noise each time we closed it. Sometimes it would get stuck and we'd have to force it shut. This time we are trying the Diaper Dekkor instead...apparently you can use regular trash bags with this one. I considered just a regular trash can but we're going to give the dekkor a shot because the pails are super handy!

So the generic refills fit this? I've been thinking about a diaper genie too and wondered this
  • I'm going to try it. The diaper genie has a cat version called the litter genie that I've used for years and love it! Not sure how baby smell compares to cat smell, but I figure it's the same concept lol. Yes, the refills are expensive.....but I think it's worth it if it allows me to be a little lazy with taking out the trash. :)

  • FTM so no experience, but we're not getting one because the idea of a diaper sausage just rubs me the wrong way. We will throw out in our regular trash and bring that to the dumpster at the end of each day. If it's a really bad one it will go out immediately.

I say nay. I've never used one. We live in a tiny condo, we just don't have room for any extra stuff like additional trash cans/diaper genie. We throw DD's diapers in the kitchen trash. I wrap poop diapers tightly around themselves so the poop doesn't fall out on the way to the kitchen. We have a stand alone trash can without a lid. It has never smelled like poop. No need to use bags or any deodorizing products. And we can only take the trash out M,W,F. DD is eating solids now, taking 3-5 nasty poops/day and our place has never smelled of poop.

  • We have this one, and picked up another for this LO.  https://www.target.com/p/arm-hammer-diaper-pail-by-munchkin-white/-/A-11990153
Highly recommend. It holds the smell really well and is easy to operate.

  • I'm a ftm but I remember my mom using one for my little sister and I loved it (I did a lot of her diaper changes) . I think we are going to go with the arm and hammer. We live in a one bedroom apartment so we will probably put the pail out on the back patio anyways to avoid stinking up the place. We may just try arm and hammer scented bags

    It's a BOY

  • Yay. We needed something hound-proof and it worked very well.

  • No. We had one with DD and it was just too smelly. With DS we just put dirty diapers in a plastic bag. I got those Arm and Hammer ones this time around.
