3rd Trimester

Fetal Kicks

This is my second baby and I can't remember at what point kicks should slow down.  It seems a little early (29w5d).  This baby kicks ALL THE TIME but for the last few days it has slowed down a ton.  He is still moving and I definately feel kicks, I just didn't think he would slow down this much so early.  Anyone else?

Re: Fetal Kicks

  • I never really felt a lot of "kicks" -- it was mostly hip checks, butt wiggles, shoulder shrugs, stuff like that.  And even then some days he's been more active than others, and some days where I'm busier so it's not as noticeable.  Have you been doing actual fetal movement counts at more or less the same time every day?  Or does it just seem like he's not moving as much?

I have no idea, but mine have slowed a bit too. 29 weeks today (measuring 31). My doc hasn't mentioned anything about it , but I am going to ask at my appt in a week unless I notice something wrong.

I haven't done any fetal counts yet.  I'm just used to him moving/kicking all the time so for him to do just it every now and then is a big change.

good to know!  Mine is Thursday so I was going to talk to my Dr then unless I feel something is really wrong before hand.  I'm measuring 31 as well so maybe they both are just getting scrunched and don't have enough room to move as much.

  • My OB told me to count 30 movements per day at 30 weeks. She said 10 in the morning, 10 in the afternoon, 10 in the evening. If I feel less than that, drink some cold water or juice and lay down to see if that wakes baby up.

Truthfully, it makes me a little neurotic. My previous OB never said anything about kick counts. Don't know why this one is very set on counting but most of my friends and other posters on this forum have said they were not told to count.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice drastic changes.

  • My LO was very active during the day when I first started feeling kicks and pushes. Starting a few weeks ago, he became more quiet during the day and sooooo active in the middle of the night when I try to sleep (and I'd notice when I get up in the middle of the night for bathroom or switching sides). It worried me a little so I asked my mother how I was when she had me. Turns out, I was a night owl as well when I was being carried.

But yeah, if you are worried at all, I agree with the PP in saying, just ask your OB.

  • You should still feel plenty of movement - the movement just changes as baby runs out of space.  Keep in mind too that movement will feel different if baby shifts position - that is likely what has caused the difference you are feeling at this point.

I know my guy hasn't settled on a position yet because movement is all over the map and really varies from hard kicks to squirms to bum rolls!
  • My baby has gone through phases where he kicks all the time and phases where i have to really concentrate to feel him. I think it has a lot to do with growth of the uterus vs size of the baby at that time.

  • The type of movement doesn't really matter, it's just important that you do feel movements and about the same number as before. LO used to really be able to wind up and I felt lots of kicks and punches. Now it's butt wiggles, head butts to the cervix and stretches, but overall he's still as active as he was before. Ask your OB what they like to see for kick counts. Mine says 4 movements in an hour, but I usually count 4 in 15-20 mins when I lay down and focus. If you really think there's a drop off in the number of movements you should call.

  • I see two different doctors at my OB office. One just asks "are you feeling baby?" And that's all she's ever said. The other today asked me if I was feeling baby, I told her yes but some days she's more active than others (I have an AP). She said "are you feeling 4 movements in an hour?". So it's weird how it varies from doctor to doctor.

She also told me movements won't slow down, you'll just feel them differently since LO is running out of room.

I don't stress too much over it. I just make sure I feel her wiggling a lot and if so, I don't worry.
  • My doctor told me to do kick counts right after I eat a big meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Sure enough that's when she's most active. I haven't felt her slow down a whole lot yet, but I'm guessing it won't be long before she runs out of room. Oh and he said I should feel 6 kicks/movements in an hour.

  • I asked my OB about this and was told that you should always feel movement throughout the entire pregnancy. The movement will change (i.e. kicks might feel more like turns as you get further along), but you should feel something. Standard 10 movements in 2 hours is the rule I was provided. Hope that helps.

My Ob has me do a movement checklist & stated standard is 10 movements in 2 hrs. :)
  • Mine said 6 movements in an hour. Especially after eating something sugary (juice, etc)
