NBR - 79 Thoughts while watching House Hunters

This generated very entertaining discussions on my Facebook today, and I wanted to share with y'all.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/adamdavis/thoughts-you-always-have-while-watching-house-hunters

I am always confused about the insistence on gutting a perfectly useful kitchen (because old), and why people need double sinks in every bathroom. DH and I do not need to brush teeth at the same time, for reals. I live in a glorious 80's home (honey oak as far as the eye can see) and prefer just to wait patiently until it comes back in style.

Actually I think our double sinks are the only thing keeping us married (slight exaggeration).

Our house is on the market and 99% of the feedback we get is stupid House Hunters-style "Needs a 4th bedroom" or something equally asinine.

OMG that sh!t pisses me off. The listing says 3 bedrooms- why did you bother seeing it?! The dumbest one we got was that one of our bathroom cabinet doors was slightly off balance and so it didn't close completely (we are talking a 1/4 of an inch or less). You had to squat down on your knees to see. WTH?!! So you would buy it if we fix the cabinet door?!

  • lol. And Everyone loves to entertain. Must not be anyone who lives near me. I never get invited over to be entertained in an open concept living space with fireplace, hardwood floors, and granite counter topped chef's kitchen.

  • Can I love this a billion times? I watch way too much HH.

    3. Wait, you can get a four-bedroom house there on a $200,000 budget?

    #mylyfe

I can't watch an episode about a location in middle America without thinking we paid 3X too much for our house.
We are the exact opposite.  We live in the rural midwest and literally don't know anybody who even has a $200,000 house.  The prices we see are like "WHAT!?!"

Our realtor's office was one of the ones that works with HH, so she gave us the inside scoop on how it works. The buyers are already under agreement on one of the three houses when they start filming, so the realtor then picks two other similar properties that they would have shown to those buyers, but in reality, the deal is already done and they may have never had a shot at the other two properties. Makes me feel better when they pick a stupid house!

Once you know that, it's easy to pick up on which house they're going to pick... Usually, if only one has no furniture, that's the one they buy (because they already own it/the previous owner is out and the house is off the market).

Yep my friend had hers as one of the ones not picked. She actually knew the buyers b/c they had a contract on another house down the street and had come to a neighborhood BBQ to meet folks. Her agent was their agent and made the HH suggestion.

Also, I have a former coworker who was on Flip this House. You know how they have the open house at the end? Yeah, that was really all his friends and family who just came on to say how great it was and they were "interested". Totally staged. He still lives there and basically got a free makeover.

  • Your house was on UrbanSuburban?!?! Celebrity!!!!

DH won't watch that show with me because I act like a smart aleck know it all the whole time yelling at the people about which house makes the most sense for their lifestyle/needs.
He says I don't "know them." Whatever.
House and cooking shows are my version of watching sports.

Well, our house was a celebrity, lol. It looked much better on tv than it did in our hate-filled hearts.

I have a hard time not wanting to punch the hosts of UrbanSuburban. They are so annoying!! Kind of like Rod Black commentating CFL - I love to hate them. The guy was on my lawn (because urban). So close! But I'm a lover not a fighter.

Love this! These are my thoughts every time I watch HH. I'm obsessed with any type of realty show. Right now I'm stuck in a Buying Alaska marathon. I can't just cant turn it off!
  • haha this is so true!! I make comments about how long their marriage will last. and it KILLS me when they're like "this paint is a littleeee dark... I feel like you're not understanding what we want". umm seriously? or the 26 year olds with a $600,000 budget?? what the HELL do you do for a living and are they hiring?!

ps: Love It or List It is another fav of mine except I don't understand how everyone in Canada has a budget of $700,000 and up.

I always think this same exact thing when watching Love It Or List It! Some of the remodeling budgets are more than what I paid for my first house...

Even when they mention their careers I'm still trying to figure out how heir budgets are so high! Maybe a lot of people inherited money?? That list is awesome and so true.

Yeah I always wonder about the high budgets, too. But then I think about how 90% of the people I know had some kind of family help buying their first house, whether in the form of an inheritance, gift, or loan.
