Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Cytotec - question

I am about to take my last dose of cytotec and have had little to no results. I have had some cramping, but honestly I think it's gas pains and inflammation from my procedure yesterday.

My OB is on call this weekend and I plan on touching base with her if it doesn't kick in... I just don't know if it works immediately or has a delayed effect. Anyone have input?

I'm just so done with physical crap.

Normally I would call first thing in the morning, but yesterday was a tough day. She is on call and it's a full moon so I'd roll the dice that her hands will be full. I don't want to bother her if it's going to kick in but it's just taking time.

Re: Cytotec - question

  • I know it can upset your stomach and make you queasy. I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to work. I took cytotec for my induction. Each dose was in 4 hour increments. It was my 5th dose that cramps started getting strong and by my 6th dose is when I had a lot of pressure (resulting in delivery).

I would say call if nothing picked up. They did tell me that with cytotec it could take up to 2 days (again not sure if that is the case for you). You need to take care of yourself at this point.

  • If I remember correctly, when I took it I started cramping and passing tissue within a couple hours of taking the first dose. It was pretty intense and started right away. Maybe your body just doesn't respond to it. Definitely call your doctor at some point today.

  • First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss.  I actually just went the cytotec route this morning, and I'm currently in bed waiting for the bleeding to start.  My midwife actually had me do it as 800mg (so 4 200mg pills) inserted vaginally, as far up as I could get them.  She said that the med acts more locally that way, rather than having it have to course through the body.  I inserted it 1.5 hours ago and I'm just experiencing some cramping and nausea.
  • @JoeysLady‌, I'm also sorry for your loss and hope you get through this at the speed you need it to go. (((Hugs)))

I have paged the doctor. I was going to ask about the suppositories. I'm thinking that she didn't want to go that route specifically because of the tears and stitches to my cervix but I don't know.

Just took a long walk and did some stretching to see if movement would help. No dice.

  • My OB wants to see what my body does between now and working me in next week. We will do another ultrasound.

She wasn't sure how much tissue was left because it was very hard to see on the ultrasound.

I'm not exactly comfortable with this.

  • If you're not comfortable with it, get a second opinion. It's a pain in the ass, but you need to be confident in your health care provider and it doesn't sound like you are.

  • I just feel trapped and scared because it's the weekend. I don't have an options until at least Monday.

What scares me is that I don't understand the risks of what could happen if the tissue isn't passed. Usually they do a d&c for that but that's not an option. And if it becomes infected... Then what?

  • I inserted my dose of cytotec vaginally and it started kicking in 4-5 hours later. It was a delayed effect but when it started it was obvious. I'm really sorry you are still in this limbo.

  • Ok... An update.

I haven't talked to my OB again and I'm still sort of asymptomatic (other than a ton of pain from the complications). This is gathered from my own knowledge, DH and a friend who had been through this too many times.

My OB is sure that she got the sac. She got as much of everything else as possible. She is not sure how much tissue was left because it was incredibly hard to make the angle with the u/s probe and curettage.

The sac is usually what causes infection. Tissue can be passed or reabsorbed without much problem.

I think she thinks that my body has had enough trauma that it's probably not worth pushing it harder because the risk of infection is pretty low.

I'll call Monday to talk to the nurse. At least I can rest a little easier.

Thanks ladies for dealing with my freak out. I just find it hard to cope when I feel like there are big risks that I don't understand.

  • You have every right to be freaked out, upset, etc. I hate medical professionals who are unclear and don't tell you everything about YOUR health. You have a right to know what is going on and what will happen since if is your body. I have found in my experiences that I have had to be the one to ask to be informed. I have never understood why everything is always a mystery.

I'm glad that she was able to speak with you and let you know more. Hopefully it will settle your mind and no further action is needed.
