Hospital bed rest until the end

Last week I had a cervical length check & I had started funneling down to 2.4. My dr put me on strict bed rest. Went in Monday for the FFN test & tested positive. Follow-up cervical length check yesterday and I had funneled down to 1.4. Dr sent me immediately to the high risk facility for hospital bed rest indefinitely. Today, I had another check and it was down to .7cm. The dr I saw here thinks if we can get it stabilized, there's a chance I could make it until 34 weeks & deliver up near where we live at our hospital. My dr in our hometown is alarmed & doesn't think that that is possible.

What happens to your cervix if it continues to funnel down to nothing? How is it possible to not go into labor if I have no cervix left? So confused. My dr told me as I was leaving that he is hoping hospital bed rest will buy me 4 more weeks, but then this guy thinks I could stabilize after losing half of what I had yesterday?

  • I had a very similar experience with my twins. I was put on procardia & progesterone and admitted. I was also having erratic contractions that seemed to be making the shortening/funneling worse.
I was 24ish weeks when I was admitted and made it to 34w5d.
There are some drs who don't believe bedrest will help anything, but I certainly believe it does. The more you can lie down and keep the pressure off of your cervix, it will help buy more time. Some can make it several weeks, some only a few more days. Just see your progress as one day at a time and think positive. Try not to get caught up in the longterm fear. Each day is a victory.
It wasn't easy to be separated from my family, and disappointing to not have the freedom of a healthy pregnancy & feeling like I was missing out on that, but it was so worth it all.
    HUGS!!!

  • I was wondering the exact same thing. I am 30 weeks and at my appt yesterday my doctor told me I basically have no cervix left. I am on procardia for contractions and strict bedrest. I can't help but wonder how much longer I can go on like this.

With opinions that differ that much, I think if I were you I'd opt for a 3rd opinion. I don't have any experience with that situation, but I'm surprised they didn't put you on hospital bed rest.
So sorry youre dealing with this. The first week of bed rest is the hardest. Then you sort of get used to it and it does get better. Hang in there!

  • LucyRicardo3 Were you on Procardia? I can't believe you made it so long! That's incredible. They can't really give me a guess about how long they think I'll last, obviously. My dr was hoping to buy me 4 weeks being here on HBR, but the NP down here thought that was a terribly random number. I don't know. I'm just on a roller coaster until it decides to stop. Thankfully, I have this laptop to keep me occupied for the coming weeks. :)

Hello, I went from 2.5 cervix length at 23 weeks, 3 days to 1.1 cervix length, soft, and dilated 1 cm at 24 weeks, 3 days. I was put on hospital bed rest for 4 weeks with no change in dilation ( they stopped checking the length of my cervix). I received progesterone shots weekly. At 28 weeks, they sent me home to home bed rest and I made it to 31 weeks, 3 days when I delivered... So it can make a difference.., I was skeptical and scared and my drs were not sure what would happen, but I made it 8 weeks longer!! Good luck!

  • Congrats to you!  Don't know why Drs don't use bed rest earlier.  Mine didn't either until it was too late.  Went in 26w1d with 1 cm length and 2 cm dilation.  It has held since then and am now am at 29w4d.

  • I was on HBR for 4.5 weeks before my girls were born. I don't have experience with Cervical issues, but I can relate to the BR! Mine was for monitoring heart rates for my Mo-Mo girls. Hang in there...it is SOOO worth it! I would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Yes, Ma'am.   And the few times where the nurse may have been late in giving it to me, I would start having contractions again, so it's important to make sure you double-check that you are getting the right meds at the right times.
I also had a positive fFN at admission.
Oh, Ask if they can give you a shower seat, if you don't have one there already. It makes things so much easier.
