Different Cries?

I've always heard that moms can tell what their baby needs based on their "different cries." While I think I could find my baby in a room of babies based on his cry, I really haven't noticed a difference in cries.

But my baby is 8 weeks so he can (and has) cried with tears. Then this morning he was crying in his crib and no tears at all. I think the tears times have been gas pain and this morning he was hungry.

So, is this an example of different kinds of cries or is this just a case of I got to him and gave him what he wanted before the years started flowing ?

Just curious :)

Re: Different Cries?

  • It took a while for me to differentiate different cries with DS1. Each baby is different so its an apples to oranges comparison. This LO is almost 8 weeks and I can tell a pained cry vs a hungry cry. When he is hungry his cry has a 'laaa" sound in it because he is curling his tongue as if he was latched on. Pained cries usually start off loud and hungry cries build in intensity. DH thinks I'm crazy because he can't tell the difference.

  • I think hungry cries sound different. I can't explain quite how, but even with babies who aren't mine the hungry cry (at least for little ones) sounds different.

  • So far we can tell the difference between hunger and general discomfort(gas, why am I naked, etc)

  • DS snorts when he hungry cries. It's ridic cute.
  • The only cry that I can really distinguish is when he needs to burp. It's higher pitched. Sometimes it sounds like neh, neh (like Priscilla dunstan says) when he is hungry but sometimes it doesn't.
  • I saw a way to tell in the book "The Baby Whisperer". I'll try to find it online or if im have time I'll type it in.

Has anyone heard of of Pricilla Dunstan's baby language? According to her, baby's have 5 distinct cries (their language) that tell us what they need. She was on Oprah and described what each word was and gave examples. I'm not sure how to link the video but if you search for Dunstan baby language on YouTube you will find it. Or go to the Dunstan baby website and the video is on the main page. It's very interesting.

ETA: took out website address. Not sure if that is against Bump rules.

Yes I recall watching that when it was on originally. The "neh" sounding cry meant hungry and that's the only one I remember being accurate!

  • I don't know that I could distinguish DS is hungry based solely on his cry, but he definitely gives signals he's hungry.  He starts eating his hands and "growling".

  • @cgunarat‌ I had never seen that video, thanks for sharing!! I just watched it on YouTube ( the one where she's on Oprah) and found it very interesting. I'm definitely going to try and see if she's right.
  • We definitely have a hungry cry/snort and a wet diaper cry- funny though only a wet diaper, poo doesn't bother our little gal yet. I admit to being shocked and delighted and amazed when I decoded the wet diaper cry. Also has anyone been in a new moms group and heard other new babies cry? They sound SO foreign and different. Again, I was amazed at how each one was unique.
