I love that so many people feel the same way as I do about this! It drives me absolutely crazy! As a pediatric nurse people like to argue with me about this often... Ugh.

yes!  I feel the same way.  I thought for sure this was going to be a drama thread since the topic of vaccinations usually is.

I feel like we have some not-so-passionate anti-vaxxers lurking who haven't gotten up the courage to tell us all how horrible we are for poisoning our children, yet. Either that or S'14 is the smartest group of women ever to gather on the internets.

Olly olly oxen free! Come out and plaaaaaaay. Tell us how terrible we are!

  • Central Illinois here, and we had a "possible exposure" at a local high school basketball game. I work with the developmentally disabled and we had clients at that game who have been unable to receive that vaccination due to health issues.. Cue company wide screening and tons of emails reminding staff what to watch for in some populations. It kills me that people think it's okay not to get the vax. My youngest SIL spent two years overseas and hadn't finished the panel when she left the States, she got it over there and was super sick. We were all very worried about her pulling through, it was bad. Better living through pharmaceuticals people.

  • I didn't read all of the comments but this scares the shit out if me! In my blood work for this pregnancy I was informed that my antibodies from the MMR vax have worn off (born in 1984) and I am in fact very capable of contracting those diseases. I will be getting the vaccine again but was instructed that I can't while pregnant. So...I'm gonna go lock myself in a room for the next 7 months. Thanks a lot bitches (not you guys, the idiots who don't vaccinate) Edited for spelling
I was born in 84 as well but my doctor never mentioned to me.

I thought you ladies might enjoy this YouTube video (sorry I'm not a posting expert yet, I hope to participate and learn more soon). It's called "Penn and Teller on Vaccinations." It does contain some language inappropriate for work environment.

  • I actually had this discussion with my cousins' mom yesterday, regarding my cousin's baby. When she was giving a speech about why vaccinating our kiddos for diseases that are "already eradicated" I had to bite my tongue to not say everything I was thinking (my normal temper has been...eeh..."boosted" with all these preggs hormones). Instead I tried to explain why they remain eradicated, hence the importance of vaccines. All she answered was with facts seen on tv. I'm a student, I do research as I breathe, and the "it's been on TV" answer makes me cringe.

Ditto. This is what bothers me the most. Oh, I read a few highly biased and sketchy websites and suddenly I know more than someone who has been their entire adult life studying this!  :-@

How can this even still be a thing? Vaccinate or revive an eradicated disease. Have a delayed schedule if you think the vaccines are out of hand. Everyone who comes into my house when this baby is born will have mmr and tdap up to date or they won't be in my house.

    @mrsdanielleM2010
I'm honestly curious how you will enforce this. Really, not trying to be a smart ass. What do you do if it happens to be your in-laws that aren't up to date? Or someone who doesn't have health insurance? Or has issues with vaccines in general (as an adult mind you)? How would you handle the potential fallout from family or friends on this? I haven't done much research on this subject as of yet, but hearing about the outbreaks of these once eradicated diseases scares the hell out of me. I know I've had all my shots over the years, and I'm fairly certain SO has too. But I don't believe his son is up to date, which we have time to correct.
We did this and it was easy and we added flu shots. Family knew they had to have them both. I didn't ask for proof because no one fought me on it. Close friends who weren't vaccinated were honest and they didn't see DS until after flu season and his first round of vaccines. Measels weren't an issue then, so we didn't wait 12 months for the MMR, but we will this time!

This, plus my BIL and SIL returned from a couple month stay in China when DS was two weeks old. DH asked them to wait a couple weeks before visiting just to be safe.

I don't mind the question, DH and I had this conversation before coming up with the rule. My mother says I'm ridiculous but will comply. Everyone else who will see the baby is on board with the plan. We will be strictest about this until the baby has his or her own tdap at 2 months, and will no longer make an issue of it once the baby is a year old and has his or her own mmr. We are too close to large pockets of anti vaxxers to be able to trust the herd. I just have to trust that people won't lie about it. Honestly, most people in my family and DH's family are already up to date.

ETA: The biggest concern came from my sister, who is vegan. She agreed to do it despite the egg culturing an gelatin because she plans to vaccinate her own children and understands why it is important to me. If anyone had a deathly egg allergy I would make an exception for them after the two month tdap.  Thank goodness nobody on either side has this issue.

@smileygirl18 I asked my doctor about the flu, and she suggested that if in 3rd Tri I got the flu shot (next year's ideally) that the baby would be born with that protection and it would last a year. Did you hear something different? Adding flu to our rule would be no issue because only my sister and fil don't already get it every year... I just didn't know it was necessary.

We made this a rule too.  Everyone who wanted to see the baby had to have a flu shot and TDAP shot.  I don't think we made anyone get the MMR but since the measles is a threat I'd ask my family to get a booster shot this time around.  We got in a huge fight with DH's family because his mom and sister didn't want to get the shots so we made them wait until DS was a month old to meet him.  Even then I wasn't happy about them not being vaccinated.  My immediate family and friends all have health insurance.  It's very simple if it's not important enough for them to get their shots then they can't be around my newborn.  I'm not forcing anyone to do anything, it's ultimately their choice.

Our OB does the same thing. DS was born in Nov and I got the flu shot around Halloween. But, I do it to be safe. Most studies show you will give LO the anti-bodies. But, the flu can be deadly to a newborn or turn into RSV. So, I don't take any chances. KWIM? PS - my OB isn't sure if I will be able to get the shot this year. We need the preservative free version and it isn't always available in early Sept.

I def get it! Thanks for the info, I think I will probably just add it. Can't hurt, might help. :)

While still in the hospital after having Logan, they found out that I didn't have antibodies and needed another MMR shot. (I can't remember which one.) This scares me, because I don't know if I'm immune yet, or not. And I'm pregnant, so I can't get the vaccination right now. :(

ETA - Duh, of course you know I'm pregnant... I forgot what board I was on. :P

I haven't checked since we haven't needed any yet this year.) I figured it would be easier on us both if he gets them done all at once. Instead of going in at 12 months and then again at 15.

  • I love my sister, and she is amazing and great and awesome but she is also thisclose to being anti-vax. (All of her kids are 8-11 and were vaxed before this particular manifestation of crazy came to be.) When she first found out I was pregnant she started to tell me some crazy shit about vaccines and I just shot her down. Then, a couple of weeks ago I brought it up casually in front of the whole family that everyone needs to work on getting up to date on Tdap and MMR and that I expect everyone to get the flu shot this fall. I also mentioned that I'll need to see proof (MIL hates going to the doctor and is a known fibber so I played it off on her even though she's not the real concern). My sister seemed to get it in her head that we are not effing around with the vaccines and said she'd get me the vaccination records for herself and her kids. Hopefully, my fervent pro-vax agenda will help derail her crazy train before she gets too deluded.
  • Just a question on the vaccines (Must Preface - I'm not anti-vax! ;)) My neighbor gave me a few books on the vaccines which addresses a couple of the vaccines aren't as prominent or necessary as they once were. Hep B seems to be one of the controversial ones right now. Any research you all have done on that?

Also, the book addresses spacing them out or a certain schedule instead of the one for all shot when they're born, any thoughts on that too? I'm in the process of finishing another book before I start on the vaccines and now that it's in the news and the bump figured why not ask the question. Thanks! Again, not anti-vax just trying to soak in as much information on possible on everything (good lord, its getting overwhelming too, have about 8 books still to go currently and already finished 3)

For reference one of the books is, 'The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for your Child' by Dr. Sears.

  • @drae86 I think we have a few people on this board who are planning on spreading out the schedule over a little bit more time.

  • I was fully vaccinated as a child and even with my MMR shot I ended up not immune to Rubella. I work in child care and the amount of children not vaccinated makes me nervous. My OB even told me that if anyone gets a weird, unexplained rash I can't go to work because with all the anti-vaxxers it isn't a forgone conclusion that it isn't rubella. My aunt's brother-in-law was born deaf due to his mother contracting rubella while pregnant, so I guess that makes me even more paranoid.
