Fever and thermometer?

So, ds woke up this morning with a fever. I took it with two different thermometers and I got two different readings. I took them both rectally, at the highest, it was saying 101.8. I took it under the arm and it said 100.

What thermometer do you use? Is it accurate? These two are fairly new.

I think rectally is more accurate.

I agree. I was just saying that I keep getting two different readings with these thermometers. Just now I got 100.5 and 101.8 within seconds (using the two thermometers).

  • We use one that you swipe over the forehead and have also used the rectal one and didnt see much difference. Hope your LO feels better soon!
  • I've been told to do rectal if they'll allow it because it's most accurate. We bought a temporal one recently and it's easy to use but we always get different readings even taking DD's temperature twice within a few minutes.

  • Just as an FYI, you are always supposed to add a degree to the temperature when you take it under the armpit.

Ditto this. Temporal and rectal are supposed to be the same, but I can't say that's been my experience. We usually do rectal because it's more accurate and doesn't bother him.

    Yep, thanks though! :)

  • I hate thermometers! We have seriously tries them all. DS2 had several febrile seizures so I was always taking his temp and I still don't feel like I have ever gotten one that is consistent. I can take temps rectally five time in a row with 3 different thermometers and get different readings. We usually start with the temporal so see if it is registering something and then do rectal. It is frustrating. We recently purchased a ear thermometer. The jury is still out on that one.
  • Curious what temporal thermometer you ladies are using?  Is it the Exergen?  We currently have an ear thermometer.  I don't particularly care for it.  But thankfully DD has only has a few fevers and they were all pretty low (usually after shots).  So the ear one has been ok for us.  I've never had to do the armpit or rectally.  I want to get a tempral one.  I just seems like it would be so easy.
