Picking decor

I think I recall some of you talking about letting your kid pick something like paint for their new room/current room.  How are you planning on doing that?  I'm not sure Dmitri is aware enough of what he would be picking things for.  I want him to be happy in his new room but I don't want to force Micky Mouse or a boring color scheme on him.  I want him to pick but I'm just not sure if he's able yet.

Tips?

  • I can't even imagine trying to get her to choose her paint color, she's so all over the place with anything.

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.

  • I think that is something he will probably do later on. I am sure he would happily pick a color out of samples you show him but I do not think he would get that this paint is going to be on his wall for a long time. I am sure he has a few favorite colors of books/characters he gravitates towards. Maybe pick a color that he seems to like right now?

    Maybe when she's five....

  • I wouldn't let LO pick out anything until at least 3. Then it will be circumscribed picking: "would you like this grey or green" both of which will be pre-approved of course. When she's 6/7, I might give her free range to pick any colour she wants, but only for one wall, so I can do damage control with the other walls, in case she decides to pick black or orange or something challenging.
